Neal McCready has lost the forest for the trees

I don't always agree with McCready's opinions and I actually believe he's about as objective as a sports journalist can be in this state. Rarely have I found his comments so idiotic that I change the radio station (or move to the Metro section in the Mobile Mullet Wrap). But yesterday... The dude was so out of touch with the real world that I began to wonder if he has started listening to the voices in his head.

The comments that were the least founded in reality: Auburn's football program is in a different stratosphere than Alabama's, and that there is no end in sight. Hello? The lights are on, but there doesn't seem to be any brain activity.

I can't remember exactly when it was, but several months (maybe a year) ago, on the very same show, he said (and I'm paraphrasing): "But for the NCAA sanctions, Ben Obamanu, Brandon Cox and probably Carnell Williams play for Alabama."

What McCready and many of his colleagues fail to acknowledge is why Tommy Tuberville has been so successful the last two years. It's because of the recruiting windfall he got from Fulmer, Culpepper, Johanningmeier and Yeager. It's NOT because Tuberville or the "braintrust" at AU are the sharpest nails in the can. These people were not exactly building a powerhouse, losing four and five games a year and blowing every big chance they had. Their job performance through the 2003 season led to Jetgate, for cryin' out loud!

Every now and then, even a blind hog can find an acorn. Tuberville had SEC Championship talent handed to him on a silver platter. Ladies and Gentlemen, the next football game I coach will be my very first. But even I could win an SEC title with the talent handed to him.

What McCready and many of his colleagues ALSO fail to acknowledge is that the window is now CLOSED. There will be no more Ben Obamanu's or Brandon Cox's any more.

Tuberville has an SEC championship and one SEC loss in two years because Alabama couldn't sign all of the kids who wanted to play for Alabama. Period. LSU also benefitted from the sanctions, as did Tennessee. Are you telling me that an Alabama program with all of those players wearing Crimson isn't beating LSU, Auburn and Tennessee like the stepchildren they've always been? Come on. Get a grip on reality.

These knuckleheads are standing in the middle of a forest, and they keep getting lost because they're too busy looking at the damned trees. I can only wonder what they're going to say when Tuberville returns to his standard 8-3 or 7-4 seasons, and Alabama returns to perennial SEC and national title contender. And look... We ALL know that this is going to happen.

Get out of the forest, Neal.

McCready is a Finebaum wannabe

He is just like aubarn, wannabe's. He is an ole sis graduate but was the barn beat writer for the Mobile Register. He is a big "tubby" fan. I dont know but maybe ears was the ole sis coach while he attended there. This would explain some of his obsession with tubby and the barn. He sucks! If in the Mobile area he is on 105.5 in the afternoon. Follow sports talk radio and you will see what I mean. Listen to Colin Cowheard on ESPN radio in the morning then tune into Finbaum early afternoon. Then listen to McWannabe around 3:00- 3:30pm. He cannot think for himself. You will quickly learn that all he does is repeat what he has heard and on the 2 previously mentioned radio shows.

Let's not forget that McCready was the Ole Miss beat writer when Tubberville was in Oxford and that he spent quite a while on the Auburn beat for the MPR. If you listen to his show with regularity, he's about as unbiased as Bobby Lowder.

There are no "unbiased" reporters in Alabama...just reporters who know how to push our buttons to get readers, etc.

Great post GCT and I agree completely.

It has amazed me to no end how Auburn fans and the media can patently ignore the impact of 3 years of Bama investigation/speculation and 3 years of probation/scholarship limits on the Aubie football program.

Fulmer crippled Bama and may be got a few extra wins while protecting his recruiting base, but Auburn was the big winner in this mess because Bama's troubles allowed them to clean up on in-state talent for 4 years.

I guess if they never acknowledge this windfall, then they don't have to acknowledge that its about to vanish.

Personally, I think it's absolutely hilarious to hear anyone proclaim that the Auburn football program has surpassed Alabama. The last time this sort of talk was bantered about was probably in the late 50's.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. :) RTR.

The funniest thing to me is this...sometime around week 7 or 8 of the season, he and Finebaum both said that Bama had once again regained their place as the #1 team in the state and that Auburn was an afterthought.

What all of this means in reality is NOTHING! We just need to stay the course and Shula will begin beating Auburn on a regular basis again because our recruiting has been phenominal and will continue to beat Auburn badly. All we need is to keep the faith and I firmly believe Shula will deliver us to the promised land by '07!

Great points. On the first one, don't you know that Auburn's success is just eating Fulmer alive? He basically gave Auburn everything that team needed to beat him. Not once but twice, and take the SEC championship away from him. Talk about a cruel irony.
