I Watched Ole Miss-Jacksonville And Here's My Take On What I Saw

I don't know how many here had a chance to watch Ole Miss-Jax State, but I got it on ESPN Game Plan.

It would be a vast understatement for me to say that it was the most unusual game I've ever seen.

I've honestly never seen so much of a momentum turn around in any football game. And after watching the game in it's entirety I have to think it may possibly be the biggest upset in college football history.

Ole Miss started Nathan Stanley at Quarterback and he looked like Eli Manning to start the game. His first six pass attempts he was 5-6 for 113 yards and three touchdowns. And I'm telling you Ole Miss's receivers were so much bigger and faster than Jacksonville States DB's it wasn't even fair.
They were getting open 10 and fifteen yards for long touchdowns.

And the Ole Miss defense was also downright scary. Big, fast, physical, and totally dominating the Gamecocks who could do absolutely nothing right.

After five minutes of the game I honestly turned to my wife and said.."This could end up 100-0). It truly looked that way.

And then...guess what?? Nutt replaced Stanley with Masoli.

He looked ok, don't get me wrong. He came in with the score 21-3 and actually led the Rebels to ten first half points.

But when he was in the game, Ole Miss went nearly totally to the run and abandoned the long pass attempts Stanley had been so effective with.

It shortened the game time wise, which was a blessing for a worn out and out physicalled Jacksonville State team which literally was getting run out of the stadium.

And you could just sense a vibe when Masoli came in, that the entire team lost something. Very hard to describe. But they went from a bunch of fire breathing dragons to just kind of going through the motions.

Once Jax State had a couple of breaks go their way....it was night and day.

They flat out lined up and ran over that hyped Ole Miss front seven in the second half.

Everyone knows the end result. But the amazing thing to me still, is that Nutt, in the second half rarely played Stanley, and with the game on the line, Masoli was his QB. That was obvious.

End result. Stanley who passed for 113 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter and a half, ended up with 133 total passing yards.

And Ole Miss didn't attempt another "bomb" after the first quarter.

I don't know what Nutt was thinking but I can tell you right now, if he had of left Stanley in the game, Ole Miss would have won by a score of something like 59-17. Jax State had no answer for him.

But he couldn't beat 'em watching from the sidelines.

Just simply a weird game. I'm fairly good with words, but unless you saw it, it can't be described.

But I'm very happy for the Gamecocks cause I simply don't like Ole Miss..lol...and you have to love Jack Crowe.

But that one yesterday was simply unbelievable.

Yeah just a completely bizarre game. My brother is an Ole Miss alum so he isn't happy today. Nutt got a little too cute with the switching of quarterbacks. I think that contributed to the defeat.

It reminded me of when Ray Perkins was at Bama and we were totally running over Boston College. Way ahead early.

So Perkins, thinking the game was in control, put in Vince Sutton at QB to replace Mike Shula for a series. We fumbled. The momentum changed, we couldn't do another thing right and B.C. could do no wrong coming from way behind to beat us.

It was similar to that. But Jacksonville State didn't have Doug Flutie at QB so even that doesn't compare. Just the most amazing and weird game I've ever seen.

I don't know and haven't read anything, but just reading accounts of this game makes me wonder if bringing in Masoli may have divided this team. It's happened before.

I just finished watching the replay as well. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Cody Blanchard, last year's Mr. Football in Alabama was the spark that started the comback. He led Cherokee County to the 3A state championship last year, and played great as a true freshman in the Ole Miss game. He is going to be a good one.

I'm gonna tell you something. That kid was phenomenal.

My friends and I were sitting there asking..."Did we not offer this kid"?

He was that impressive. Undersized possibly for the SEC, or at least according to "standards", but I was very impressed with his performance. He ultimately was the spark that gave the Gamecocks life in the second half.

Well....this is all I know from watching.

Ole Miss gets the opening kick off and drives 60 yards in three plays for a TD pass. That easy.

Jax State punts and Ole Miss throws a bomb for a TD on either the first or second play. 14-0. That easy.
Ten minutes to go in the first quarter.

Jax State drives for a field goal and kicks off.

Ole Miss drives 70 yards in five plays and scores on a 35 yard pass. 21-3. Ridiculously easy. Unfair easy.

Enter Masoli-Exit Ole Miss.

They went from me being concerned about playing them to looking like they were pathetic.

So yes, I think those players, whether they'll admit it or not, resent him being there. Especially Nathan Stanley.

I can't see any possible way that there's not at least some dissension on the team.

I have some family that lives in Centre, AL. The way they tell it, the guy has a big head and didnt think he had to study because hes a small town football hero. He slacked in the classroom. He either didnt have the grades and/or they didnt wanna risk taking him since he didnt have any motivation in the classroom.

ahhhhhh...well that explains that thank you. Can't play on the field if you're ineligible in the classroom.

This can't be true because when Coach Houston Nutt was pleading with the NCAA to overturn Masoli's status he plainly stated "the team wants him (Masoli) here". ;)

That and the fact, Houston Nutt is not a very good coach. Never has been.
He'll be looking for a job very soon.

Yeah I remember that game. Just as bizarre as this one. I think the Masoli situation will backfirevon Nutt.

Didn't they say during the game that Masoli was named a team captain for this game?

That is more than a little surprising to me. He just got there a couple of weeks or so ago.

Also, I was shocked when Crowe put Ivory in at QB for the game-tying 4th quarter drive & 2 pt conversion. Blanchard had led them to consecutive TDs scores to tie the game, yet here comes Ivory. It worked out fine, of course.

Coty Blanchard is the son of a lady I graduated from Cherokee Co. with, and I've watched his career since high school. He's not a big guy, but he's a winner, and it was very nice to see him lead JSU on those last scores...

And, I don't think any coaches seat could've gone from "cold" to "hot" so quickly than did Nutt's...wow.

Therein lies a problem. A kids been convicted of marijuana possession and theft, he's been there less time than most members of the team, and he's a team Captain??????

Ole Miss is in for a long year and Nutt deserves every ounce of grief he gets.
