I wonder if this hasn't been in the works for at least several days--it sure happened fast. Seems no matter what changes come about, Saban ALWAYS has a plan!

saban must keep a list of candidates on hand at all times. with the desire for saban lineage coaches in college ball, im not really surprised by how quick he made this decision. good hire on the coaching and recruiting fronts by the way.

It looks like Rumph has a very good recruiting pedigree, with experience in Memphis and in South Carolina. And with some of the players he's coached, he's got something to sell to recruits.

On the other hand -- and you don't know how much of this is sour grapes, etc. -- I gather that some Clemson people think he's a great recruiter but not a great coach. South Carolina people seem to agree, but also, they might be getting a little more worried about Clowney.

In any case, if Saban jumped on him so fast, you gotta figure he feels like he got the guy he wanted.

Looking beyond the Clowney ties, anyone know much about Clemson football?

They always seem to have great DEs: Gaines Adams (not sure if Rumph was coaching at Clemson in Gaines' time there), Merling, Sapp, Bowers. But I couldn't analyze their performances...

This is my opinion on the matter. And I very seriously doubt Coach Saban brought in Coach Rumph solely to help with Clowney, although that's an added bonus.

If Coach Saban didn't have faith in Coach Rumph's actually coaching abilities, there's no way he would have gotten the first look, much less been lined up in advance like this...

i was there for 7 years. regardless of who is coaching, they are a jeckyll and hyde team. you never know who will show up. they are known for having elite DL players and WR's (who cant actually catch). however they tend to disappear for games just like the rest of the team. all i know about clemson is that you never ever bet on one of their games. then when you think they have things going for them, almost always bet they will lose to an underdog that has no business beating them.

I am pretty sure Rumph will be trained to coach per Saban's philosophy and scheme. There are many qualified ...'t coaches out there and the thing that distingiushes one from the other is their ability to recruit. Saban went after Rumph for a reason.
