Just wondering if Jesse Williams has any mates down under who would be interested in a college education and who, by the way, can punt the ball with both feet! Just a thought.

Not really rugby like, kicking and punting is a bigger part of the Aussie rules game than the American version. Thats why their kickers and punters could do very well in our game. Wouldnt be a bad idea.

I always thought we should go after some lower weight class sumo's to play on the o and d line. Not just for size but for hand technique. A guy whos martial art is exclusively slapping, hand fighting and leverage could translate well. Im not being ironic either I'd kind of like to see it happen.

Interesting idea, but I think it's far easier to train bigger guys in the skills sumo wrestlers used (the hand technique + leverage) than it is to train sumo wrestlers in football.

I play Aussie Rules in Atlanta, and after playing with some of the Aussies I'm honestly shocked more teams haven't started doing this.

A decent washout from the AFL youth system would transform a college's punting game, and be players who know how to tackle, unlike say soccer players (not saying they could play LB) If they've grown up in Auskick they've had more technique training than any team could ever provide them, and can literally place the ball anywhere you want them to.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one whose thought about this. I think that they could be outstanding run blockers/bull rushers, though I don't know if they could get the hang of pass protection. They would also need A LOT of conditioning work. A Sumo match lasts all of what, five seconds?

Kicking the ball Rugby Style is easy. It's just a matter of the coach being OK with it.........

There are many outstanding kickers and punters out here. Kicking the ball is a much more natural thing for many of our kids as it is part of their upbringing. There are a dozen or so Aussies punting or kicking across ncaa in addition to the handful in the nfl.

Sounds like you just finished watching "The Replacements." Very enjoyable flick, but the premise was much the same.

Some of those young men could easily earn a free education at an American university if they can kick well, and do it under pressure. Just curious...are any of the high school kids interested in such a thing?

Considering the balls are differently sized / shaped, I suspect the transition wouldn't be as easy as some would think.
i'd wager you're right, but after the season brad wing at lsu has had, i would guess some other coaches would be looking into this. its not necessarily the distance wing is getting (which isnt bad) but the control he has downing it deep in the opponents territory thats been impressive.

Ha, ha -- would expect not at the same time to avoid such a thing
If each foot kicked the ball at the same time, what a punch that would deliver. With us having a month of down time, someone closer to the program should let CNS know about this new found technique that we at Tide fans have discovered!

A sore butt is worth the sacrifice for a 60+ yard punt! :biggrin2:

I don't think transportation from home to school is included as part of a scholarship under NCAA rules. So unless the kid's family had money to spare, it might be difficult to get them to come here.
