Re: RB Rushel Shell Updates

This is just a shame... He seems to be a lifelong Pitt fan... I really felt like he could of been the next Mark/Trent here... oh well we'll find someone better to win titles with.

RB Rushel Shell commits to Pittsburgh

Shell has broken most of if not all Tony Dorsett's high school records at Hopewell HS, now he will have a chance at his college records at Pitt. I don't see that happening but you never know. I think it is obvious that Shell is a big Pitt fan and he sees a much easier time to earn a starting RB position at Pitt, especially if RB Ray Graham goes to the NFL early after this season.

http://alabama.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1278747
Pitt landed one of its biggest recruits in years Friday morning when Aliquippa (Pa.) Hopewell running back Rushel Shell committed to the Panthers during an announcement ceremony at his high school.

Shell picked Pitt over a long list of scholarship offers, but his final choice was Pitt and Alabama.

A four-star recruit, Shell is ranked as the No. 45 prospect in the nation, the No. 5 running back and the No. 2 recruit in the state of Pennsylvania.

Shell was one of the most heavily recruited players in the country, choosing Pitt over other finalists such as Alabama and Oregon.

Shell has already rushed for 1,061 yards and 12 touchdowns in just five games this season. He is just the 11th player in state history to surpass 7,000 yards rushing, and has already set the career WPIAL rushing mark with 7,827 yards and 90 touchdowns.

Actually Shell was a life long OSU fan and they were his leader until they got in trouble with the NCAA.

"(The violations) took a big toll on my recruiting plans," Shell said. "I probably would have ended up at Ohio State if they hadn't got in trouble. But they got in trouble, so I've got my new team."

Re: RB Rushel Shell commits to Pittsburgh

Now I have no quote from Shell on this and it came from a Pitt board back in August so I post it as a rumor only a rumor. But saw it several times and eluded to it on here that they may be other reasons for staying close to home. If a mod feels it needs to be removed please do so but it does not impact the recruit in a negative way but does shed some light on how things played out if true.

In August on some Pitt boards some poster that goes to his games and is familar with the program said Shell found out his girlfriend was pregnant and the next week he was quoted in an interview stating he had made his choice but would wait until today for his HS game that was being aired on ESPNU. Prior to that he was planning on to make OVs this fall but if the rumor was ture and the timing seems about right he never scheduled any OVs and only visited Pitt this fall. Not saying he would not have ended up at Pitt, because they do produce NFL RBs, but I think if the personal concerns were true his decision was made based on that in August.

BTW he was originally going to announce his decision at the game but since the game was scheduled away the home school told ESPNU no because it was their campus and a huge rival. Again message board stuff from the Pitt area, but makes sense.

I wish him luck at Pitt and I do think he will turn out be another great back for them.

Can't blame him for that. Having children has been a key factor in keeping some Crimson Tide players close to home...

Watching the kid now on ESPNU. Too bad we didn't get him. From the eye test, he's as good as advertised.

Re: RB Rushel Shell commits to Pittsburgh

good article from my local paper today. i had no doubts Shell was heading to Pitt after the OSU/Tressel issues since he tweeted something like "made my decision to join up and coming program" in the summer. anyway, he's a great get for pitt and a terrific kid. if anyone watched the game on espnu last friday you saw a kid with maybe even more talent, #4 on central valley. some good players here in western PA!

Does Pitt have savior in Hopewell's Rushel Shell?

By Chris Harlan, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, October 16, 2011

Pitt coach Todd Graham asked Hopewell tailback Rushel Shell for a favor when they talked a few months ago.
"He said, 'Once you come up with your decision, if you're going to come here, try to (commit) as early as possible so we can bring a lot of guys with you,' " Shell said. "I thought that was a smart idea."
Standing outside his high school Friday morning, Shell called Graham, told him they had a deal and announced his college choice to local media.
This was a marquee recruit for Pitt's first-year coach, and the expectations for Shell have been growing. Could he start as a freshman? Could he recruit highly coveted defensive end Noah Spence of Bishop McDevitt to Pitt, like he says he'll try? Could he lift Pitt into prominence?
How much difference can one recruit really make?
Shell digs into Pitt's history for his answers -- not the Dave Wannstedt years or the Walt Harris years. He goes back to when Pitt won a national championship -- about two decades before he was born. When Tony Dorsett chose Pitt, enrolling in 1973, it bolstered the football program.
"When Tony went to Pitt, he took a (recruiting) class with him," Shell said. "They built from there and won a national championship. That's what I'm trying to do. If I would have waited until February, we might not have had a chance on some of the guys."
Shell hasn't hidden from the expectations. He knows his Pitt history and can draw parallels. While Dorsett bought into what Johnny Majors' and Jackie Sherrill's new staff was promoting, Shell has embraced Graham's.
"That surprised a lot of people (for me) to come to the University of Pittsburgh," Dorsett said. "Pitt wasn't a winning program at the time. It may have helped some other guys, locally, decide. They'd say, 'He made that move; maybe I'll stay close and give my parents the opportunity to see me play.' "
Since Shell chose Pitt over traditional powers including Alabama, Florida and Ohio State, the move will be noticed by recruits nationwide, SuperPrep publisher Allen Wallace said. That's what Graham is hoping for.
"They need some notoriety now," said Wallace, who ranked Shell among the nation's top 50 recruits. "It would be a sign that the upcoming recruits have confidence in Pitt. That's what Pitt needs to establish."
Shell called Pitt a "perfect fit." Some may question whether the 5-foot-11, 210-pound senior would be a better fit with teams that employ the I-formation, like the system he runs in high school. But Shell is convinced he will fit well into Graham's spread offense.
"They have that -- what's it called? -- high-octane offense," he said. "I think it would fit me well."
As a four-year starter at Hopewell and the WPIAL's career rushing leader, Shell has shown he's more than power. He had runs of 46 and 59 yards in Friday night's nationally televised game against Central Valley. His coach, Dave Vestal, said he believed Pitt was the right fit.
"He can catch the ball out of the backfield and run the football," he said. "He'll flourish in any type of system."
Quick, strong and with good hands, Shell should fit well into a spread offense, ESPN analyst Craig James said.
"Anyone who has vision, who can cut and run and play in space and catch the football can play in that offense," he said. "If I was a young running back coming out of high school, and Todd Graham recruited me with his mind and his offense and his success rate, I would be very intrigued, and I absolutely would love to play for him."
Pitt could need a starting tailback next season if Ray Graham enters the NFL Draft. Joe Butler, a local scout for Metro Index, said Shell could fill Graham's role in time.
"Shell is the kind of guy who has the talent to come in and play right away," he said. "He has the talent to go to any school and play right away. It's a big adjustment for any young guy to go from high school to college. Some guys make the adjustment fast, and some guys run a little behind. I don't want to say he's going to come in and start, but he has enough talent to come in and be in the mix right away."
Shell said he wasn't made any playing-time promises. He has talked with Ray Graham about the offense but doesn't know whether the junior will turn pro.
Whatever his role, Shell won't go unnoticed.
"I expect to have a lot of eyes on me because it's my hometown," he said. "But I'm not worried about it."

yeah, heard same thing locally but not sure how valid it is. There's no doubt he was going to either Ohio State or North Carolina in my mind. But after Tressel and Davis got fired it moved Bama and Pitt to #1/1A. The rumor the girlfriend didn't want him too far away from home and whether or not it was because of a pregnancy i have no idea.

real happy for pitt. I'm a season tix holder, have been for a long time, and going to the games hasn't been all that fun even watching fitgerald, revis, mccoy, lewis, otah, etc

if pitt can parlay this shell recruit into getting spence (long shot) and add a few others it will be their top class in 30 years. Spence is every bit as good as clowney from last year

Re: RB Rushel Shell commits to Pittsburgh

this pretty much ended all speculation on shell's personal situation...if not for this I believe he was bama-bound, but wish him the best of success at Pitt (my 2nd team)

in Class AA playoffs he ran for 292 in losing effort. His team only threw for 7 yards in the game and down just a few points with 3rd and 3 in opponents end the coach decided to use Shell as a decoy on both 3rd and 4th downs. They lost the game...must have been a brutally frustrating way to end his career by not touching the ball on final 2 plays after being the sole reason your team was in the playoffs in the first place and the only reason they were competitive in the game

I knew is girl friend was pregnant did not know it was twins. congrats on his new family but that was why most felt back in the summer he was choosing Pitt. Even though smoke screens about following TD tradition at Pitt and being average as he stated was never the deal.

Re: RB Rushel Shell commits to Pittsburgh

Todd Graham has just accepted the head coaching position at Arizona St. That may or may not have an effect on Shell's firmness with his commitment. Pitt is in his backyard after all. But this is something to maybe keep an eye on.

Doesn't he have an issue that will likely keep him at Pitt regardless? Sure was not an impediment for Trent. Shell was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard the announcement.

yes, Shell has twins on the way and his girlfriend wants him local

BUT, being that Trent and Dre had no problem juggling kids at UA it is absolutely worth a call as I'm sure Saban is in a much better position to sell this to him today

this kid is awesome! I've never seen such a one-man team in my life. Nobody could stop him even though every play was basically just a wildcat to him. Not one other player on the team has a D1 offer

Good. I just can't help having flashbacks to when losing Lance Thompson cost us Darren Myles and almost Trent.
