I think Morris will end up #2 by the start of the season. He looked pretty good ( made a couple of ill advisded plays) but overall he looked the part of a good QB

It has been hard to predict. For instance (I might have some details mixed up), I remember first seeing Blake Sims throw at A-Day and thinking he didn't look bad. The next year though, he ends up being a running back, and Ely is behind AJ and Phillip. Then, last year Sims ends up looking like the #2 guy.

I think they are too invested in Blake at QB not to use him. Whether or not he's the true #2, or is part of a running oriented package remains to be seen. I can't guess between Ely and Morris, I don't think most of us would have any clue that Sims would have seen the field at QB as much as he did last year. I would guess one of the two won't stick around though.

Sims offers something the other QB's just don't have and it forces opposing teams to prepare for it. He is a great change of pace should we need it. That said Morris IMHO looks like he may be more capable of running the entire offense. If Ely plays it will only be in a major blowout or if we've had a rash of injuries. Bateman I think was put back in for Del Rio simply because he is such a raw physical talent that needs reps. Del Rio will get his chance down the road and he knew that coming in.

I just read Coach Saban's new conference and this is what he had to say: " "I don't think we are where we need to be," Saban said after the White team (first-team offense) defeated the Crimson team (first-team defense) 17-14. "Too many people too comfortable with their position. That, to me, does not lend itself to great competition or being a great competitor."" I wonder what he meant by that.. Was he talking about the Offense?
IMO he was spot on with his comments and he probably meant it for all the starters.

I agree on Sims and Morris. Sims can hurt you with his feet in a second and he has his own package. Morris seems to have clearly placed himself at the #2 spot for now. Ely looks like he may have regressed a bit. Most players do respond to competition positively but not all...

6 scholarship QBs and 3 walk-on QBs. I would not speculate on any of them besides McCarron and Sims, but I would expect some thinning out by the season opener and even fewer numbers by next A Day.

Did the touchback rules change again this year? I can't say I was paying the closest attention, but it looked like after the KR caught the ball in the endzone they spotted the ball at the 30. If so, they must really hate KO returns...

Basketball originally had a center tip after each score.

I was thinking it was presently the 25. We can institute any rule we want for the spring game...

It was difficult to assess yesterday's game from a fan's perspective. The game was sloppy, but we have a lot of young guys who have only been wearing pads for about a month. The offense looked stagnant at times, but they were only using about 6 plays with a few variations of those plays. The defense looked very solid, but was that because they are that good or because the offense was so off kilter? Here are a few things I think we can be sure of though.

1. If AJ goes down we will probably be in deep trouble. It's apparent that Blake Sims is not the answer as a #2 guy. He is a good utility player, but he is not a full time SEC quarterback. Alec Morris showed the most promise of the young qb's but he is still young, Bateman was tough to judge, but he probably needs a redshirt, Del Rio looked about the best of freshmen, but he (like Bateman) will need at least a year, and I'm just not sure that Ely has the physical tools to be any more than lifetime backup.

2. Backs and receivers are absolutely loaded despite being plagued by injuries. Yeldon and Cooper both look like they will be capable of award winning seasons if they perform to their full potential, Drake looked like a very capable backup at RB, and we didn't even get to see both units at full speed. This will probably be the deepest we ever get across the board at the skill positions.

3. The O-Line looks as if they won't miss a beat. They opened holes for the backs to run through, and they provided adequate protection for the qb's. I saw a few plays where the quarterbacks were under more pressure than they should have been, but I never saw a lineman miss an assignment or just get blown up by the defense. Strong effort by a part of our team that could have been a liability in years past.

4. Our Defense will be scary good once it fully recovers from injury. Our safeties especially may be the best and deepest corp in the country. I am excited to see where we are after Moseley, DePriest and the rest are a full 100%.

That's what I saw yesterday. No matter how sloppy and boring the game was at times, it was still great to see the Crimson jerseys back on Bryant Denny. Now we just have to hold on for another 4 months and 10 days and the football will return. Roll Tide

I really didn't get the acrimony over the defense due to the scrimmage stats. They were probably designing the scrimmages to really attack the young corners to get them better. You know, putting them in a lot of one-on-one situations with deep developing routes. The A-Day game probably featured more calls with safety help on those deep routes.

To that point, the safety group looks as deep as I've ever seen a team. Landon Collins looks like he's going to be a breakout player who can get his nose in around the box more like Barron. Perry and Sunseri seem like they've grown into the defense now in their upperclassman years. HaHa has an absurd knack of always being near where a play can be made. The corner position will stabilize with Fulton getting health and this safety corp is going to give them a lot help towards making their job easier.

The DL looked mediocre in the first quarter but the intensity and pressure got better from towards the end of the first through the end of the game. That is where the development needs to be made to get this defense towards 2009 or 2011 levels. I think they can get there though. Probably will need a few freshmen to be able to contribute.

The offense looked sloppy. I wonder if the offensive side was kinda setup for this kind of game. Like I said above, I think the first two scrimmages were built to test the young corners. The QBs got use to seeing opportunities with little safety help and they hurled some regrettable passes accordingly. It's a good teaching moment for the QBs and skill players and it probably help build some confidence on the defensive end after getting thrashed all Spring. I think this team is behind some other Saban teams in the Spring but injuries probably has a lot to do with it.

My take?

Top priority is the development of a back up QB.

Blake is o.k. but needs to stop trying to force the action and start taking what the defense gives him. Right now though I think he's probably the only one of the back up QB's that Coach Saban would trust to manage a game if something happened to A.J.....but somebody needs to step up. I liked Morris's passing ability but I wish I could have seen more of the freshmen, especially Bateman and Del Rio.

The O-line looked o.k. but the defense was still able to put quite a bit of pressure on A.J. which concerned me.
This one's a wait and see.

I think our d-line will be better because we seem to have a lot more quickness and ability to pressure the QB.

Loved the receivers but I don't think Kenny Bell is close to 100% yet. Falkins and Black impressed me.

T.J. Yeldon will be an All-American. He's mighty darn good.

I definitely think Henry, if recovered, is an obvious choice as his back up.

The db's looked very good to me. Even though Cyrus got lost on Bell's TD he seems to have a very good nose for the ball. I think he'll help us.

I didn't realize Sunseri could run so fast. On his TD he was burning.

I can't imagine there being a better safety in college football than Ha-Ha. If you want to know where Ha Ha is just find the ball. That's where he'll be.

Collins will push Vinnie for PT if he develops a full understanding of the system. What an athlete he looks to be.

Cade Foster did good but I think our place kicker(PAT-FG) will be Adam Griffith. He's probably NFL bound some day.

Some mystery surrounds this team right now but I have a feeling it's going to be a mighty good team that scores a lot of points and gives up very few. 3 of 4 is definitely a possibility if all the pieces fall in place.

RTR!

I would much rather have a sloppy spring game that gives the staff something to hold over the heads and something to work on than a great one that could lead to complacency.

I think it's hard to judge the backup QBs at this point, because we have 9 QBS on the roster and it is difficult to judge them in the game, because many of them saw limited actions. It's good and bad for them, but we'll definitely will know who will step up big time in the fall probably after two or three games.
