Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (will miss first half vs Rice)

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

This is absolutely true. There doesn't have to be a tape or something proving JM got paid. The sheer number of items signed would require that only an idiot wouldn't know that they were headed for market. I wonder if he told the NCAA that he thought these guys were just good fans of his who wanted a few more items signed that most fans do...

What I think will happen...

They will either try to get JFF to admit to wrong doing, or get A&M to do their work for them. If neither plays ball, and JFF takes snaps on game time, then the NCAA pulls out their trump card - the "knowing they would be sold for profit" as that one has already been proven. These were autograph brokers, and he signed thousands of items. The NCAA can even hit A&M with LOIC if they really wanted to if they let Manziel play while being aware he broke this rule.

Believe it or not, unlike Newton, there's already at least one rule that has evidence of being broken - and this is the NCAA's trump card. They may very well be daring A&M to play him. Cam Newton, for all the things he had done, was still a (generally) likable personality (always smiling, trying to say the right thing) and playing for an underdog-like school (though Auburn is far from a Baylor or Vanderbilt-esque underdog). Manziel is an unlikable douche, playing for a "big money" school. Even he comes from money (unlike Newton) so his actions are "less forgivable" in the eye of public scrutiny.

If ever a case came along where the NCAA could actually appear to have teeth, this may very well be it. I don't hold out a lot of hope that justice will be served (that some rich kid decided he needed to be richer by breaking rules that less fortunate kids have adhered to all these years), but the NCAA does have that one ace up their sleeve. We'll see if they act upon it or not.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

It's becoming more apparent by the hour that Manziel will play against Bama and will likely not miss a minute of playing time. The NCAA wants this to blow over. They want TAMU to lose to someone so they aren't a BCS title contender so the scenario whereby they have evidence he cheated won't ruin that game.

The NCAA is officially useless. This is further evidence.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

I had thought the best outcome would be for aTm to bench him the first two games, have him back for Bama. If that would get him off the hook for what he's done I'm ok with that.

But after watching the approach that's been taken, I think now what I'd like to see is he plays without sitting out any games, then Bama beats them decisively with him in.

And then the NCAA steps in...you played an ineligible player, let us introduce you to an LOIC charge. With all the extras that involves.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

The NCAA has power until Texas A&M or any other institution breaks away from it.

The public opinion seems to be he should be punished, although no one wants that because of what game he'll miss.

A&M is not powerful enough to break away.

Kudo's to the ESPN reporter for the first question to Sumlin at the PC, on the Aggie so-called "Code of Honor"...loved it :D!
Only thing, I'd rather that question been directed to the Aggie Chancellor. Sumlin kind of flailed around a bit trying to address it at first. Nice little jab by ESPN though...

(Edit: It wasn't the first question asked at the PC)

How did Sumlin field that one?

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

This kid will pocket the cash, smirk and give the NCAA the finger, and then go on his merry, irresponsible way. If it ends up any other way, I`ll personally be rather stunned.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

I'm sure the lawyers would prevent this scenario, but I think A&M would be well served to issue some type of suspension saying JF should at least have known the items would be for resale w/o admitting to him being paid for his signature, then request time served as punishment from the nazi's. That may give the NCAA an out. I think they stand to look very weak and like idiots if they don't issue some type of punishment and I don't think they can afford that right now. Everyone knows he either took money (that's what I think) or had to know the items would be sold.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

You don't just sign THOUSANDS of helmets, pictures and footballs and think they are going to little kids. He knew good and well what was going to happen to all of that stuff.

There is NO WAY aTm will suspend him for the Bama game unless the NCAA has some pretty hard evidence against him.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

NCAA has no one to blame here, they Set the standard for the defense with Cam forever & a day.
1. School hires lawyers
2. Athlete denies it
3. Money goes to a friend or non direct relative.

Thats it simple as one two three.

This. Don't like the way the Aggies are handling it, but the NCAA gave every school the way to do it.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

I'm hearing rumblings that A&M expects to hear the NCAA recommendations tomorrow or Thursday, but who really knows...

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

I think he's suspended for first two games based simply on 'knowing' items would be sold. Perfect for aggies, they get off the hook and jff stays healthy for BAMA game. tamu will win first two without a QB. The down side would be maybe jff is left somewhat rusty.
This has been my prediction for a while. NCAA will cut a deal with aTm and JFF to drop the investigation if he agrees to confess that he knew the items were going to be sold. 1 or 2 games suspension and "not enough evidence" that any money changed hands. End of story.
