IMHO you don't need to change any schemes. It took our qb to play like John Elway to win. The turnovers hurt you even without them it was still a close game. If your defense had a pass rush and normal depth in the db's this type of offense wouldn't be so successful. If I was Saban I wouldn't change a thing. Reading this thread reminds me of some of ours a few years ago. Don't gripe about a 11 win season. They're not that easy to get even at programs like Alabama, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and USC.

I know a few years ago years ago it seemed our players seemed to think if they showed up they would win. I didn't see that with your players. Alabama is on a great run enjoy it. It's not over. Hopefully we can build on this and catch you guys in the championship next year. My son had to have surgery so I was unable to go to the game but heard the Bama fans were the way I remembered them from 2003. Congrats on a great program on a great run. Don't underestimate your coach and don't think you're doomed every other school's fanbase would love to be in your shoes for the next few years coming up.
I do think there's a bit of a "the sky is falling" mentality at the moment. Going into the season, we had three key areas of concern: OL, pass rush, and defensive secondary. OL managed to get by most of the year, but was exposed last night. Pass rush never really materialized, and every time the secondary started to gel, someone got injured.

We need to tweak the system sure, but wholesale changes aren't called for just yet.

Oh, and Henry needs to be the starter next year.

Heading into this season, everyone's concerns centered around our O-line play and the secondary. While we saw improvement at times for both, they didn't not produce well enough to play at championship level. We were able to get by against most teams even though we struggled against teams we really shouldn't (csu, miss st). However when we ran into teams that had good coaches with schemes that were able to expose our weaknesses and had the athletes to do it, we lost. We were lucky to be able to get by A&M and LSU....
As has been pointed out, coach has probably his biggest job in retooling things with not only new faces in critical positions but in also rethinking some things about philosophy and approach to the changing college game. I think we have the best coach for it so I'm going to try to swallow these last two losses and look forward to the spring. RTR

THIS!!! I hope the staff travels to Stanford in the off season and picks their brains about this. In life, you must adapt. Life doesn't stand still; sometimes change is inevitable and I'm hoping the renewed off season approach helps us in the future.

It's not just Stanford doing this unique training philosophy. Auburn is to. They are implementing less brute strength exercises and going to more cross fit type workouts. What it's producing is leaner, less "bulky" players who are able to move.

So, how do we train for the cheetah (HUNH) and yet still defeat the lion (LSU)?

just to add a bit of perspective. we end the regular season a couple of weird bounces away from being in the BSCCG and it is considered a "bad" season and we are sitting here discussing how the game may have passed by arguably one of the best college coaches (who is a defensive genius btw).

georgia ends the season "5 yards from playing in the BSCCG" and they have coffee table books made about it.
If the greatest coach in college football history had to adapt to keep relevant I don't think Saban is immune from it either. Too much evidence sits in front us, or the coaching staff, to ignore. The HUNH has neutralized what Saban has used for years to have an edge on defense. His 310+ lb defensive linemen are becoming irrelevant to teams who play on the edges and run plays at a 13-16 second pace. Once again, as we did with Auburn, for much of the night our defense looked confused and couldn't get of the field on third downs. 1 and 30 and they end up converting. This is becoming a normal thing when our defense goes against this type offense.

You have to train them to do both. Which means rather than having a top five run defense you may have to sacrifice a bit and settle for a top 20 run defense. But we cannot continue to stroll 300+ defensive linemen and 250 + lb's out there against these type offenses and think we're going to have success. We're not. Especially when none of the DT's can get any pressure whatsoever.

I remember Mack making a comment about this a while back.
Last year I had to drop and run to Dallas and missed the SECCG. I finally got to sit down and watch whole game the other day. Last year vs this year IMO TJ is less nimble, and his behind is bigger. Whatever we're doing everybody is getting big behinds.

how do you know he is not adapting? we are 11-2 after winning the past two championships and are in year six of what has to be one of the best runs in college football that doesn't appear to be slowing down much at all. the HUNH has been a thorn in the side of this year's team, but there are only so many things you can do once a season is in motion. also, this year's team is not next year's team. what i saw in the a and m games and in the barn was a lot of missed assignments and missed tackles. I'm sure part of that is because we are asking them (the d) to do a lot, but a lot of it is that we didn't have the players (especially in the secondary) making the plays this year.

I can agree with that sentiment. The only acceptable result for most Bama fans is a NC, though, and the coaches know that. It would have been nice to have won, but many would consider this season a disappointment (fair or not). Playing in the Sugar Bowl used to be regarded as a great reward for a great season. Great ambition changes that for everyone.
The BCS has changed the bowl mentality. It used to be that several bowls could have an impact on who came out #1. While I don't think the change is for the better, we're not going back. Next year, the Rose and Sugar Bowls will be the only ones that lead to the championship. Everything else is effectively an exhibition game.

I think we are making more out of than it really is. The reality is we are not as good on the defensive side of the ball right now. It's more players than scheme IMO. I think the answer is in personnel.

IMO, we have to start at least implementing some of this in our training program. The game has changed before our very eyes and until we show we can stop the HUNH offense then it's going to be all we see.

Maybe he is adapting and it just takes time for it to show. We keep harping on the secondary but there's no way fixing the secondary is going to be the "magic pill". It's more than that. The success OU had last night goes way beyond just fixing the secondary. Our DL'men aren't quick enough off the ball to cause any disruption in the backfield. They're too big. Our defensive mindset isn't to play on the edges but in a phone booth. We're built that way and once teams spread us out and force us out of the "phone booth" so to speak we are very vulnerable. No shutdown corner in the world can hold receivers very long in today's game without pressure from the DL. It's just unrealistic to think we are going to consistently find corners with this ability. Most of the DB's that will come through Alabama and all other programs will not be shutdown corners. So we can't hang out hats on a type player that in most years we won't have.

utah and florida did the same thing to us in 2008, and SC and the barn did it to us in 2010, we bounced back very well in 2009 and 2011-12. jmho, i think people are putting too much stock in the last two games where the wear and tear of a season at #1 started showing up in areas that we knew from the beginning of the season were going to be areas of concern.

I'm not worried about next year.
