Anybody else find it odd that Kirby Smart's name hasn't come up?

I think a lot of the new head coaches at big schools are offensive guys (aside from Strong) I think it's a sign of the times.

UL hired petrino
penn st likely to hire Franklin
usc hired sark
washington went with Petersen

He probably makes more than 80% of the head coaches in CFB right now. And he is probably happy where he is at, I have guys that have worked for me that were excellent workers and do a fantastic job but for what ever reason they didn't want to be promoted and were very happy with what they did and where they are.

All these vacant coaching jobs and not one mention of anyone courting Kirby.

I'm glad, but am surprised by it.

You?
Kirby name will come around again, I'm sure. IMO, somehow I believe Kirby knows his final destination.

Well, I have a hunch about it. Kirby Smart will be our next HC, and Saban is grooming him to take the spot, if he will just be patient and learn from the Jedi Master. Smart knows this so he is keeping his powder dry and his mouth shut.

There. That's my stab at it. What say you?

If we are to believe what has been reported in the past few years about Kirby turning down interviews/jobs, then its not surprising. After a while, people just assume you are not interested in becoming a head coach (fairly or unfairly), so they pass you up.

It feels like he's slipping in to the Bud Foster/Norm Chow zone; highly regarding coordinator who just never seems to end up with a head coaching gig (although, Norm eventually got one).

You tell a girl you don't won't t dance several times, eventually she stops asking.

I don't think he will be hot again unless we have a defense like 2009 or 2011 again. He may have missed the boat as far as top-notch head coaching gigs go unless we roll out another great defense. I wonder if many people have begun to only see him as a puppet of Saban instead of some type of innovator. When people see OU run up and down the field on your defense, your reputation takes a bit of a hit.

No. There are lots of Jedi Masters, but only one Sith Lord. ;)

Actually I think it's because 'offense' is the flavor of the month, and most ADs are looking for offensive minded backgrounds to fill HC positions.

What head coaching jobs has he really been considered for? The only job I really remember him pondering was the Georgia Defensive Coordinator position several years ago.

He was considered at Auburn before Malzahn got the job. Auburn fans deny it ever happened, and there is some speculation that it was an attempted distraction before the ND game, but that's a stretch, IMO.

I think for the most part, Saban realizes this and he could be giving Kirby a chance to add few more new wrinkles to Defense. We did get too predictable this year on both side of the ball. Kiffin and Smart will be working hard to implement new offense/ new defense winkles .... I expect Kirby to be gone after this year since lot of coaches are on hot seats.
