Re: Lane Kiffin a candidate for 49ers OC job

So, we're going to bait and switch on recruits? Not likely. Even if CNS wanted to, everybody who can read (insert Auburn joke here) knows the rumors about CLK. Anyone who he is recruiting will surely be asking him the question directly prior to NSD anyway.
Yeah, dragging this out will just give other teams more ammunition to use against us.

Lane owes Saban big time for helping salvage his career. Now Kiffin needs to step up and salvage his reputation as a vagabond and announce that he is going to stay with the one that brought him to the dance.

Re: Lane Kiffin a candidate for 49ers OC job

I don't think he needs to anounce anything. he never stated he was leaving and If We know LK and CNS, CNS will probably say.." Look you guys made a big mess out of nothing. I never said he was leaving. All I said was that our coaches has opportunities and I'm always for it if it benefits them. I don't get it why you guys continue to make something out of nothing. lane has done great job for us and will continue to do so this year.."

Re: Lane Kiffin a candidate for 49ers OC job

My guess would be that having this indecision about the OC this close to signing day is not making Saban happy. I think he hoped to avoid this situation by making Kiffin agree to stay longer than one year when he hired him.
How many times does it have to be said that you cannot force someone to stay. Kiffin could have agreed to stay 3 years but he can still leave now if he wants. His contract is not binding - hardly any contracts are. It's a piece of paper that says if you work here for the next X amount of years this will be your pay, job duties, etc.

Kiffin may have agreed verbally to Saban to stay longer than one year, but again that is not enforceable..

How do we know there's any indecision whatsoever from Lane? So far, this entire thing is on the media and their 'sources'. None of the actual parties involved have said a word.

I think that, with Lane's performance this year, if he does leave, CNS will be looking for a different type of OC than in the past. (And will come closer to letting the OC call the game his way.)

I think I understand this situation as well as you do.

Another thing to consider is who can we 'pry" away from Teams in College and NFL that can identify with our offense? Almost lot of "best" coaches are taken but if CNS comes calling, they would be inclined to answer the phone...

It will be interesting to see how much traffic this thread will generate as long as "silence" drives everyone crazy! :pDT_kuku:

Re: Lane Kiffin a candidate for 49ers OC job

I may be in the vast vast minority but I think this "silence" is because there's no substance at all to the "rumor" and Kiffin feels no responsibility to address it. He's too busy recruiting.
I'll say it again, I don't think the 49er's OC job is attractive at all. As a matter of fact, with the volatility of the NFL, I wouldn't touch it.
You have a QB who can run like a deer but isn't a great passer, a tailback, in Gore, who's getting older, Bolden at Wideout, who's getting older, Davis at Tight End, who's getting older.
Again, I may be totally wrong, but I don't think there's any interest at all in the Kiffin camp.

Do you think he'll make that same parenthetical change if Kiffin stays?

I'm in your camp Sip. The Special Asst at Indy and Mike Shanahan are likely the targets from what the San Francisco area media are espousing.

Re: Lane Kiffin a candidate for 49ers OC job

The good news? If we lose Kiffin or keep him -- we still win at least 10-11 games next year.....

As we have with every OC we've had since 2008......

Maybe I'm just getting old, but.....if he leaves, he leaves.....he's a journeyman.....he's going to leave either this year or next.....

Cajun, my friend, I'll bet you five pounds of crawfish that he stays until Saban retires in hopes of a better job at that point in time. :)

Re: Lane Kiffin a candidate for 49ers OC job

I'd hate for him to leave this season just from the fact that Coker and the other QB's have already invested one year into learning the offense. He leaves now and guess what? Yeah, having to learn ANOTHER system with a first year quarterback. We've been fortunate in the past but the more times you have to do this the odds of it blowing up in your face drastically increases.

Once agan Sip I agree with you ... sorta reminds me of the Saban to Texas rumors last season. It literally didnt stop until Strong was hired.

I totally agree with this. We don't know anything that has or has not happened here. When Saban was interviewed at the Senior Bowl, he said he would address the open coaches jobs later, that right now he is working on recruiting. My guess is Coach Saban knows exactly who he will hire and knows what Kiffin will do. He'll address it all on his own terms. If you go back and look at the way he addresses rumors, he never does a quick answer that the media wishes he would, it's not his style.

Re: Lane Kiffin a candidate for 49ers OC job

Honestly, I'm on the fence. While I love Kiffin and his multi dimensional offensive system, I wont shed any tears if he left and Saban brought in a ground and pound OC to replace him.

I miss ball control power football. I used to love watching our team make defenses tap out.
