New coach search...

I haven't been excited about Bama basketball since sometime late in the Mark Gottfried era - except perhaps briefly when Coach Grant was hired. I am excited right now. I think that he is what the program needs right now - a face; a personality. Some wanted Pearl last year, and he is everything Pearl was and more -- and without the baggage. I know there are some risks, but Bama basketball has instant credibility with recruits. When was the last time you could say that?

Re: Recruiting.....many if not most of these kids want to get to the pros....with Coach Johnson's NBA pedigree....they will certainly be attracted to play under and learn from him. Huge impact, IMHO.

Even Tim Brando tweets that it's a "home run hire." :-)

He is right for a change. Home run hire. Brando is still an idiot.

Much better hire than Marshall IMHO. He'll get into homes Marshall would never have been able to get a shot at. We have made a statement about where we want to be in basketball. We are no longer content to be an also ran.

It isn't a home run hire, but it is a solid double into the corner.

I disagree adamantly but to each their own. Given the perception of BB and the Bball program just a week ago this is a freaking grand slam. I ordered my season tickets when they fired Grant and the lady said I wasn't the only one. I'm stoked to see what he can do. That said, the press conference is won and the perceptions have done a 180 so it is already a BIG BIG ROLL TIDE WIN!!!

Only time will tell. This is certainly a very interesting hire.
A guy who has been the NBA Coach of the Year but never coached in college.
Two completely different games and lifestyles.
I've seen it mentioned here in a negative way that he may be a bit of a "control freak".
I'm not sure that's a bad thing when it comes to coaching college aged kids.
You can't even think about getting away with being one in the NBA.
There's one absolute. This guy will definitely be able to teach basketball skills that result in consistent player development, especially on offense.
That, in itself, well may be worth the paycheck.
We haven't had a coach that actually developed players since Wimp, and even he wasn't beyond good at it.
I'll just say this. I like his character and his hunger for winning. He'll definitiely be a recruiting plus, hopefully not just in the south.
I'm behind him 100% and wish him success.
I'll say this though. We lost a lot of players and it's not an overnight rebuild, so we are going to have to show some initial patience no matter how impatient we may be and how fast we want to be good again..
First thing Avery has to do is get some quality basketball players.
RTR! Go Avery!
sip

Agreed but it is a much quicker turn around than what Saban had to accomplish. Can't wait!

BTW - Once he inks the "Tidefans rule" on criticism and coaches goes into play! RTR!

We need an ambassador of vision and positivity to get this ship moving. AJ is just that type. Face it Grant seemed to lack a pulse at time and I NEVER saw him out in the public or at events being the "Face of the program." Look at Patterson, Saban, and Murphy. Hell, even the golf coach is out SELLING the Bama program ALL the time. CAG was never like that and the more I reflect the more I see 6 wasted years.

Thank you Coach Battle for still swinging for the fences. Just because the power hitters strike out now and then it's no reason to bunt for the rest of your career.

No idea how Avery Johnson will do in W-L's, but he will say more to the media in his first 15 minutes than UA hoops has done in 6 years.

For those who are newly inclined to Johnson, during his playing days, I thought he moonlit as a Southern Preacher (he's not). But he is a motivational speaker to say the least. He's played at a high level at the highest level and has played with/coached some of the best to ever do it (David Robinson, Dennis Rodman, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash) and speaks the language.
He was a gritty player and a true floor general.
He'll win parents over in the houses of recruits. He's a man's man.
In terms of Xs & Os, he's learned at the feet of two of the best (and winningest NBA coaches) to ever do it in Don Nelson (offensive wizard) and Greg Poppovich (no nonsense, defense, rebounding, and teamwork advocate).

And by the way, he's coached Gerald Walllace and coached against Mo Williams..and had some epic battles with Robert Horry. He's garnered much respect and praise from them all. He'll definitely rally the alumni base.
I think we'll compete at a high level

This is the type of positive exposure that CAJ will bring to the program. Bill Simmons is a very big name in the sports world..
