Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Because if you were close in any way to the program, you'd know just how ....ed the staff and players are. And there are others on this board who are in the know who knew this was Hurts team all along, and had been saying so regardless of what was said in the presser.

You want to know why Barnett was given the nod in the first game? The reasons were twofold. Reason 1 Hurts was the better QB from day 1, he was better in every practice, every film study. The guys on the team loved him. He was never outworked. He was a coaches kid who came in and immersed himself the way you always hope players will.

He won the locker room, but he still had one more test to pass. CNS came out the week before USC and named Barnett the starter in part because he wanted to see how Hurts would respond. Hurts did exactly what you would expect out of a leader. He didn't complain, he put his head down, and he prepared for the game the exact same way he had every practice. He passed the final test with flying colors.

Reason 2 was because the staff wanted to see if Barnett could flip the switch in an actual game situation the way he hadn't been able to in practice. Some players just perform poorly in practice, and the hope was that Barnett was one of those players.

Barnett never flipped his switch. Hurts showed leadership even when he was named backup. After that, there was never any question who the starter was. Barnett saw the writing on the wall and quit on his teammates halfway through the season, proving once and for all that this staff made the correct decision.

Is that clear enough?

Great Post. You described exactly what many of us felt and saw.
I got on the Jalen Hurts band wagon at the A-Day Game. Turns out that evidence proved my opinion to be valid. This Summer I had an opportunity to talk a little football with Fred Sington. Freds opinions were the same as mine. Made me feel good, because I respect Fred Sington. He is always pretty much in the know.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Well, Jalen Hurts is our undisputed four year starter at QB now. I'm happy. Some good times are ahead.

Seems Barnett might have an option to play next year right away.

The source who thinks Barnett might have all of 2017 available muses that by leaving Alabama now and arriving at a two-year institution with a mid-term date in mid-October, Barnett would be essentially wiping clean the fall of 2016 at Alabama from his academic record. Consequently, his midterm transfer to a two-year institution would allow him to retroactively start the clock to the beginning of the first semester, thus allowing him to be eligible for the 2017 season with three years remaining to fulfill three years of eligibility.

I tend to think that since he played in 4 games, this "loophole" won't work, but what do I know.

Only way to make this more exciting would be Fred Sington telling you via seance that the kid (Hurts) reminded him of his old teammate Millard "Dixie" Howell.:PDT_019:

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

I have so many thoughts on this:

I have been a huge fan of Barnett from the time he committed to us. I was almost positive he would be a 3 year starter and win a Heisman and multiple NC's. So of course my assumption was that he would win the starting job this year.

I went into Game 1 willing to give him and Jalen a fair shot like most of you and CNS. Jalen outplayed him in terms of composure and leadership. Jalen won the job for good in the Ole Miss game and to be honest I'm glad CNS didn't panic and pull him when we were down 21 points.

My last comment on the whole situation though was that I hoped we didn't give up on Barnett and continued to develop him. It felt very promising to have two extremely talented guys as #1 and #2 and that IF Jalen got injured we would be 'OK'.

I think we bungled things a bit in the Kent St. game. Barnett should have played the entire 2nd half and been allowed to 'sling it' and get real reps under his belt. I don't care if the final had been 84-0. Something felt screwy to take him out and put both Bateman AND Cornwell in the game. Barnett has kind of been bottled up and held back in all of his playing time doing 'mop up' duty. I personally don't think he was given a fair shake and this last game broke his spirit.

Now there is NO EXCUSE for him quitting the team now but I can understand him feeling like he was not REALLY given a fair chance. After last Saturday I fully expected him to leave at season's end but not now. It puts us in a bad position.

We better hope Jalen doesn't get injured now or the season will be derailed. I have no confidence in the other QB's. In today's game you have to win shoot outs and even our defense gives up points in gobs against other good/great QB's. We needed Blake as #2 this year.

So anyway Barnett is wrong for leaving now.....but not in general. I think CNS bungled this deal some and the Kent St 2nd half was the nail in the coffin.

I hate that Barnett is leaving and wish him well. He will start somewhere and be great. Don't be shocked if he still wins the Heisman somewhere else and gets drafted in Round 1 of the NFL. We just lost a phenomenal talent.

We lost a 'Phenomenal Talent' who had several opportunities in games to show what he could do. Blake didn't move the ball. Blake acted panicked and unsure of himself. That's not reassuring to the team. ON THE OTHER HAND... Jalen made a mistake on his first play, but redeemed himself and took control of the game. Next game Jalen played with composure, Blake didn't. Jalen moved the ball and Blake didn't. I see things differently than you. I saw Jalen Hurts make the most of his opportunities, and Blake didn't. No excuses, Jalen earned the job.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

*sigh*...Our collective criticism is nearly unanimously about him quitting his team in the middle of the season, not upset that he dare want to play elsewhere...

Dean Smith (yeah; I quote other people a lot) had a philosophy about this that the Barnetts should learn and that CNS probably agrees with: in season, everything for the team; out of season, everything for the individual.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

If he hadn't played, the eligibility would be restored. He played and it cost him a season.

Or it's costing him four games into next season before he can "re-debut" for whatever school he ends at.

Plus, you gotta know

He’d be eligible to play the conference schedule at his next destination.

many, many Power Five coaches are going to be keeping the light on for him under center (or in the shotgun) four games into the season...That's the bated breathing of fantasy FBS football, right there.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Will Lowery did not hold back.
You quote one remark from Reggie Ragland.

I imagine the other players are upset and disappointed, but except for Ragland, nobody can cite an example of any other player expressing anything negative.

I think that's a sign of class from the team.

No competitive team will pull a starter for him 5 games into the season. It would destroy team unity - look what it did at Ohio State last season. Sure, he could jump into the role for a team in trouble, but do we really care about that?

I made it clear in the 2nd paragraph that Jalen won the job. I just don't think BB had the same fair chance to play in backup duty. He was handcuffed a bit against WKU and completely shackled against Kent St. Jalen was always given the full reigns. BB was mostly allowed to run out the clock and get the game over with....then not even allowed to do that. He was done a bit wrong in that aspect. Jmo though.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

I don't get the criticism.

You're Blake Barnett and you're an extremely highly recruited QB prospect. You choose to go to Alabama because it's a great program with a great tradition and a great coach. You want to play QB for the tide and you want to win.

You're redshirted your freshman year. Then, as a redshirt freshman you lose the job after a handful of series -- to a true freshman.

If you were one of the best high school QBs in the country and had your pick of schools, would you really want to be a backup? He wants to play, and he wants to play at a high level. Would it be admirable for him to try and fight it out and win the job back from Hurts? Sure. But the writing is on the wall that this isn't his team.

I think some of your need to take off the crimson tinted glasses and look at things from his perspective... Why would you ride the pine when you could be all conference somewhere else?

Do you really not understand at this point that no one is upset he's leaving? It's the fact that he's leaving RIGHT NOW. You don't do this to your team 1/3rd of the way into the season. It's called quitting. It's a complete and total distraction. It's selfish.

If this happens in January, no one would be this upset. I don't see how some of you don't understand that point yet.

Make that Fred Jr... I haven't used the JR with him for years. Sorry bout that. Jr. is still live and kicking...

The timing sucks....

But, even beyond that....2nd string QB at Bama as a FRESHMAN (mind you) vs being a 4th year Sophomore at Utah, Washington State, or Cal Poly....without knowing for sure if you will be a starter.....

I think riding the pine for another year at Bama would provide you with much better coaching, facilities, access to some of the best football minds in the country....then do like Coker -- transfer with 2 years of Eligibility left AFTER you get your degree....no sitting out...
