Re: Blake Barnett Transferring
Great Post. You described exactly what many of us felt and saw.
I got on the Jalen Hurts band wagon at the A-Day Game. Turns out that evidence proved my opinion to be valid. This Summer I had an opportunity to talk a little football with Fred Sington. Freds opinions were the same as mine. Made me feel good, because I respect Fred Sington. He is always pretty much in the know.
Because if you were close in any way to the program, you'd know just how ....ed the staff and players are. And there are others on this board who are in the know who knew this was Hurts team all along, and had been saying so regardless of what was said in the presser.
You want to know why Barnett was given the nod in the first game? The reasons were twofold. Reason 1 Hurts was the better QB from day 1, he was better in every practice, every film study. The guys on the team loved him. He was never outworked. He was a coaches kid who came in and immersed himself the way you always hope players will.
He won the locker room, but he still had one more test to pass. CNS came out the week before USC and named Barnett the starter in part because he wanted to see how Hurts would respond. Hurts did exactly what you would expect out of a leader. He didn't complain, he put his head down, and he prepared for the game the exact same way he had every practice. He passed the final test with flying colors.
Reason 2 was because the staff wanted to see if Barnett could flip the switch in an actual game situation the way he hadn't been able to in practice. Some players just perform poorly in practice, and the hope was that Barnett was one of those players.
Barnett never flipped his switch. Hurts showed leadership even when he was named backup. After that, there was never any question who the starter was. Barnett saw the writing on the wall and quit on his teammates halfway through the season, proving once and for all that this staff made the correct decision.
Is that clear enough?
