Neil Grouch nominated (now confirmed) for SCOTUS

Re: Neil Gorsuch nominated for SC

Maybe you missed the numbers of Republicans backing the Iran deal. Not every republican is an ultra conservative so it is very possible that they wouldn't all back a radical like Pryor.
Just like they wouldn't support a sexual assailant con-man before they all fell in line, one by one? Forgive me if I don't place all my faith in the promise of GOP temperance. Not in 2017.

Re: Neil Gorsuch nominated for SC

If your point is that the process of nominating Supreme Court justices used to be far less polarized before McConnell broke Senate norms in his refusal to even hold hearings for Garland while Obama still had a quarter of his term remaining... then we agree.

10 months left in his term. 8 months before the election.

48 month term -- so, 1/5 or 1/6 at best......

AND

According to NPR's Nina Totenberg, the Dems started the polarization process -- with Bork....

Robert Bork, whose failed Supreme Court nomination provoked a lasting partisan divide over judicial nominations, died Wednesday at age 85.

"Borked"

In the end, Bork was defeated by a vote of 58 to 42, the largest margin in history.

The whole episode, however, enraged many Republicans. Bork's name became a symbol of conservative grievance, and a new verb — to "bork" — was born, defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "to defame or vilify a person systematically."

"The nomination changed everything, maybe forever," says Tom Goldstein, publisher of the popular SCOTUSblog, which extensively covers the Supreme Court. "Republicans nominated this brilliant guy to move the law in this dramatically more conservative direction. Liberal groups turned around and blocked him precisely because of those views. Their fight legitimized scorched-earth ideological wars over nominations at the Supreme Court, and to this day both sides remain completely convinced they were right. The upshot is that we have this ridiculous system now where nominees shut up and don't say anything that might signal what they really think."

Re: Neil Gorsuch nominated for SC

at least bork got a vote

And Dems didn't use all of the tools available to them to achieve a floor vote for Garland. They appear to have preferred playing politics instead of actually attempting to govern.

The Judiciary Committee chairman predicted in a series of town halls in northwest Iowa this week that Senate Democrats will have to use a certain parliamentary maneuver in order to force a vote on Garland. This is a move that we don’t get to see that often. It would amount to a major affront to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is in charge of the Senate floor.

Grassley told reporters after a Tuesday town hall that there isn’t much they can do about it. He explained that the resolution can be offered anytime, which is allowed under the rules of the United States senate. The resolution refers to a procedural maneuver called a “motion to discharge.”

The Judiciary Committee chairman openly admitted that the maneuver would put the Republicans in a difficult political position.

Re: Neil Gorsuch nominated for SC

no, i fully got the point. bork is the ultimate "but mommy, timmy did it first"

No.....you missed the point.

Charmin said that McConnell started the polarization between the parties at the SCOTUS nomination process.
I pointed out that the Dems started it with Bork.

Charmin played the "Mommy, timmy did it first"
I was pointing out that - that was incorrect.
