I wouldn't care.Fine. Let's pretend for a moment that it was Alabama, and not LSU, who had won that game versus Oklahoma in the year that the AP gave the title to USC. Would as many people here still be in favor of them claiming that championship? I doubt it.
Do you know WHY USC wound up number one?
In the poll for November 30:
1) Oklahoma
2) USC
3) LSU
4) Michigan
5) UGA
6) Texas
The KEY to the whole thing is that OU was unbeaten, USC and LSU had one loss, and Michigan and everyone below (who actually mattered) had two.
OU then got smoked by K-State.....and the game wasn't even as close as the final 35-7 count. Save for that first drive, that was a waxing of insane proportions. When we beat Florida in the 99 SECCG by almost the same score, folks forget that with about 12 minutes left we only led, 15-7. It was the quick sequence of Milons's dash and the pick six that made that one a blowout. Darren Sproles ran all over OU that night. OU was a fourteen-point favorite.
So what did the AP do?
They moved USC up to number one and LSU to two - like every rational human being on the planet would have done, especially when you remember that LSU mauled #5 UGA, 34-13. USC then beat #4 Michigan by 14 points in the Rose Bowl.
Why wouldn't the AP vote USC number one? They were #1 and beat #4 in the Rose Bowl.
It's not the AP's fault that this was the biggest monstrosity in BCS history. OU lost by 28 points and REMAINED number one. I mean, you've GOT to be kidding me....
I know folks give the BCS a bad rap, but on the whole it was great.
In 2000, FSU played and beat a tougher schedule than Miami and lost by a missed FG at the end.
In 2001, the 9/11 attacks had a game cancelled that caused that mess - not the BCS fault.
2004 Auburn? Well, Auburn didn't play that tough a schedule that year.
2008 OU? Well, they sort of offset it with their blowout of the team that beat Texas. Toss-up, could go either way.
The only REAL injustice in the whole deal was 2003. The game should have been USC vs LSU in New Orleans.
The AP - a recognized selector at the time - selected USC; nobody of importance selected UCF.
