Honduran migrant caravan arrives at US border

Seeking asylum, chanting the Honduran National anthem, waiving Honduran flags and allegedly "fleeing" the country they so dearly love with the assistance of the Mexican government. And you guys wonder why so many of us want a damned wall with armed security on it?

I'll start off by saying I haven't followed this specific story that closely.

But... A lot of immigrants throughout history have dearly loved the country they fled and many of them still carried the symbols from that land. The Irish and Italians say hi.

Why did the Mexican government assist them on their journey or better yet, allow them in?

CNN has been tracking a pregnant woman and her two small children on her journey to the border. While I am sympathetic to her situation, my feelings should not be the basis for public policy. I'm all for immigration as long as it is legal and the immigrants are going to be contributors to this country. I'm going out on a limb here and making the call that an unskilled, single woman with small children is going to have her child at tax payer expense and the four of them will be on the dole for decades. No thank you; we're all stocked up here already.

I will wait until the kids are grown to pass judgement on whether they will be a contribution to society. People have come from lower places before and ended up doing great things.
ETA: I still do not agree with them coming here illegally I'm just saying I do not like people being judged by where they come from.

When they can prove to be contributors then I will welcome them with open arms. Otherwise, if we can't make judgment calls, let everyone in and have access to your money.

When my family came here from Ireland in the early 1700's we had very little to demonstrate that we could be contributors. I remain somewhat pleased that we did not have to depend on others judgement calls to allow us in.

What type of qualifications should be required for someone to cook our food, clean our bathrooms, mow our grass, pick our food, etc., etc. The qualification I have seen by the vast majority is to work whatever hours are required for the lowest possible pay and do it all without complaint.

When your family came from Ireland in the 1700s there was no taxpayer funded welfare either.

From a quick search:

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/mexico-gives-immigrant-caravan-transit-visas/

The Mexican government has started issuing transit or humanitarian visas to members of a Central American-immigrant caravan making its way north.

The traveling immigrants, 80 percent of them from violence-ridden Honduras, are seeking asylum in either Mexico or the U.S. Many intend to start new lives in Mexico, but some plan to settle on American soil, including in New York and Houston.

...

“It is not the responsibility of this government to exercise immigration decisions of the United States or any other nation, so it will be the competent authorities of the American Union that decide, if appropriate, to authorize or not the entry into its territory of the members of the caravan that request it through the authorized entry and exit ports,” the statement added.

Mexico’s National Institute of Immigration did say it would disperse the group, however, and there were signs that such an effort was underway this week. Close to 400 of the immigrants have already been deported back to their home countries, the Mexican government said.

Yet they still faced anti-Irish and anti-immigration sentiments for an extended period of time.

Ok, that's not the same thing that's going on here. Many if not most of these folks will go on government assistance once "processed." If they come over illegally, do we know if they are criminals which there are an inordinate amount of criminals that cross the border illegally (technically all). Do they carry diseases? If not properly screened & quarantined how will we know. What skill sets do they possess that will allow them to function and contribute? These are all legitimate questions and to be perfectly honest, as a nation we need to address them as is. Just because some one wants to come here shouldn't be the only reason we let them in. So life in Honduras is hard. Make it better.

It's similar to what is going on here. There are at the very least parallels to be drawn.

I have no problem with immigrants going through a screening process or being forced to go through a legal process but I don't think we know that most will go on government assistance or not be able to contribute.

However I disagree with the premise of the last two statements you make. It's basically another version of my ancestor immigrants got their's so screw everyone else. It's easier said than done to just make somewhere better when you're worried about your kids dying in the streets daily. We have it much better here and we still struggle to do anything to make things better.

I don't blame them for wishing or seeking a better life for their families. People still see America as a beacon of hope in the world. Rightly or wrongly America created that image for centuries. The world hasn't fully caught up to the xenophobic, hate-filled, fear-based Fox News version of America that has been creeping in the last 10-20 years. Eventually we'll likely have New America and Fox Newsica for people to choose between so it should work itself out.

I they need asylum, come on in. I'd much rather my taxes go towards helping those in need than sending hundreds of millions of dollars worth of guided missiles into some country in the ME.

Times have changed in 300 years. And people make judgements all the time, as they should for self preservation and advancement. If you don't I guess you give money to every panhandler you meet and even invite them back to your house to do odd jobs and such.

Is that all you see immigrants as being able to do? Cook and clean for you? We have plenty of domestic unskilled labor; we don't need to import more. The woman CNN is championing will cost the tax payers tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. If she can find free time from raising her growing family, she'll have to clean a lot of toilets to be a net positive for this country.

Coming from a country that has shipped literally plane loads of dollars to Afghanistan to bribe war lords and a litany of other reasons in only the latest of its' foreign adventures. One that falls all over itself to give the Robert Mercer's of the world $ millions in tax breaks. Then pardon me if I find it egregious to claim that the reason we should not allow a mother and children asylum is because we may have to provide some food and shelter to enable them to escape the dangers they are fleeing.

I fully agree that we should have a viable screening process for both temporary and permanent immigration. The difficulty is when we begin with this American exceptionalism mind set we can never hope to have a positive and enlightened means of dealing with immigrants from non first world countries.

Actually I find it hard to obtain health care without being attended by an immigrant doctor. When I became hospitalized I was attended by immigrant nurses. When I went to a University many years ago a number of my professors were immigrants from many countries. I am aware that India, as an example, graduates more engineers and other professionals each year than exist in total in the United States. Thousands of them are actively sought to work here because our educational system does not produce an adequate number of qualified candidates.

I do know that most homes built in the US are constructed with Hispanic labor. One would be hard put to hire a non Hispanic crew to brick or roof a house . Most of the food I purchase at Kroger's has been grown by Hispanic labor.

This didn't happen because hundreds of US citizens were standing in line to do these jobs.

I do clean my house, cook my food and mow my grass. I do not give nearly enough to help those who have less than I.

I have the same personal experience. My wife is such an immigrant - highly productive in many ways. These are the people I want to welcome into this country.

My ancestors were Irish too. Again, you're not addressing the reality of today, you're trying to make a stretch 300 years ago. It's 2018. We're $21T in debt. Criminals, drugs, welfare recipients and disease are streaming across the border. So you think we should feel sorry for them. Ok, I do...now go back to Honduras, kill all the MS-13 gang members, kill the corrupt cops & politicians and clean up the country.
