Unless Pitino was caught in bed with a live boy or dead girl, he should have received a blank check. Byrne’s one job was to hire the best basketball coach out there, and he failed miserably.

Greg said one of the qualifications was to have no NCAA problems. That immediately ruled Pitino out.

We didn’t hire a “high school coach from Buffalo,” either. The guy is highly respected throughout the nation for the job he’s done already.

So if it’s football, it’s ok to hire coaches with skeletons in the closet such as Kiffin and Sark?

There is a difference because of the man in charge of the football program. Kiffin wasn’t the head coach neither is Sark

I completely forgot about that time that Kiffin and Sark where mentioned in an investigation run by the FBI. I also forgot about that time that Kiffin and Sark has their assistants get prostitutes for recruits. Also, Kiffin and Sark aren’t the faces of the program.

Look, I put him on my list kind of jokingly, but Pitino was NEVER a realistic candidate nor should he have been. Sorry man, you’re way off base on this one.

Listen to any NATIONAL basketball analyst and they say this is a slam dunk hire. This guy is going to do great things IMO.

I have an idea, how about to quit griping about it, learn something about CNO’s style of play, and support OUR coach! Either that or just stick to cheering for us in football.

Were you even around when Bama was great under Wimp? SEC Championships and Sweet 16 appearances just about every other year? Damn near made it to The Elite 8 if that basket would have fallen against UNLV. It’s been way to long and I’m hungry for that success again. And I’m telling you, this Oats guy isn’t going to cut it.

Hungry enough to hire a guy that has no business coaching in the game anymore, given what we know was going on behind the scenes? Hiring him would do more damage than any NCAA tourney success could alleviate.

I know y'all like to bag on Pearl for coming off as sleazy, but he’s a saint compared Pitino. Pitino is the anthropomorphic personification of sleaze.

Actually, I was around, and I loved Wimps teams. Actually, I see a little of Wimp in Coach Oats. Please explain why Coach Oats isn’t going to cut it? Give some reasons other than “He was at Buffalo”. Was Wimp a proven coach when he got hired? You do know that Bruce Pearl got hired to UT from a mid major right? Chris Beard came from Ark-Little Rock, You’re guy, Rick Pitino, got started at Boston U, Brad Stevens was at Butler, I can go on and on. Please give me reasons, other than “Grant came from a mid-major” as to why this guy isn’t going to work out.

Your opinion has been duly noted.

I can remember CM Newton as head coach, so of course I remember Wimp. You don't have a monopoly on Alabama BB history/memories or hunger for success.

I disagree on your assessment of CNO. He has succeeded at every stop. He is known as a teacher and a grinder. He appears driven to be successful. If he simply follows the template he has made for himself he will find success and Alabama will succeed with him. You can either be a fan and cheer for that to be true even if you have reservations/doubts or you can continue to wine that Alabama did not hire a man who would sully the reputation of the school at best and open it to investigation of multiple programs - including football - and all the dangers that come with that at worst.

It's over and done. Time to move on.
 
I think some people are going to complain regardless of who we hired. If we had hired Coach K with Tom Izzo and Billy Donovan as his assistants you would still find something to complain about. Or if we did not hire Coach Oats and he had gone to aTm or Arky instead and turned them around then the complaint would be that we didn't hire CNO while we had the chance.
