Gus is a rinky dink high school coach. RDHSC know how to get guys amped up emotionally. This is the polar opposite approach from Saban and it hurts us in games against Auburn and LSU.

It’s been mentioned before, by JessN, how his refusal to acknowledge the emotional side of the game hinders him against Auburn, who embraces it. It’s at the core of his philosophy: don’t get too excited, don’t get too down. Even keel. But against Auburn, and Gus, who embrace chaos and emotion, it falls flat.

We had the emotional high ground going into this game. We squandered it.
I truly think it's a blind spot for him. Every coach has 'em and that's CNS's IMO.

We get so many undisciplined penalties without emotion, just imagine if we get too amped up to play.
Using that logic Auburn ought to jump off sides every play, right?

Some emotion is a good thing. And I personally think it's the difference in most of these game we lose against AU. It's like we can't beat a decent AU team even when we are clearly more talented.

Bama is 3-3 in the last 6 games there. Did not seem to play scared at all - but the D played very poorly. The coaching overall was poor.

Don't know where to go from here. The Clemson game should have been a wakeup call of wakeup calls. The team looked sick and aimless from the mid 2nd qtr on. This team had the greatest offensive personnel in Bama and maybe SEC history, even the defense has several NFL players. I know many will say CNS needs to go back to the drawing board but he's been there the past 2 years, not sure that he knows where to turn. The overall edge is gone and the defensive coaching poor. There's still hope for a good future and certainly CNS deserves every benefit of the doubt, great patience, as well as many, many thanks, even if things don't turn around. The hounds and pit bulls will be unmerciful - outside and inside.
The level of defense CNS used to put on the field isn't coming back. The game has changed too much. Shut down defenses are a thing of the past. Bama will shut down some teams, but great offensive teams will score a bunch of points on anyone. This defense wasn't good, but 2011 is never coming back due to how the game has changed on the offensive side of the ball, and the rules that favor the offense.

I'm ok with Bama missing the playoffs. But god help the soul that Bama will face in the bowl game.
Why God help the soul...our defense cant stop anyone with an offensive pulse. Even without the huge errors, we just gave up 34 to a terrible offense. Bowl game will just be another 40 something game for both sides.

I do think playing with a little emotion is good, but I think we might be giving it way too much credit. If we played with so much emotion do we automatically feel like we would win all of these games by 30 or 40 points. The FANS' emotions may mean more than anything when it effects communication on the field. Emotion can only take you so far into a game. All of these players play with a certain amount of excitement or they wouldn't even be playing the game.

Aye, but being in position, making fundamental tackles, being sound in technique would make a huge difference.

I haven't read the 20 pages of posts, but I'm going to say the following, then go away for a while.

There has been a lot of talk about the defense this year. We lost numerous starters to injuries. That's hard to overcome. However, the freshmen that have been playing all year in their place have not progressed. They still make the same mistakes and get fooled and are out of position. That's coaching. Not being able to substitute and get players on the field, as we saw at the end of the game, is poor coaching. This isn't the first game of the season. This is the 12th. We ought to be able to substitute and get our players on and off the field without getting penalized. I hope we get a new DC. Maybe South Carolina will fire Muschamp and Saban will hire him as our DC.

I thought Mac did as well as could be expected, considering how little he's played this year, even though we've had blowout games against everyone except LSU. Not playing your backups when the game is won? That's coaching.

Auburn scored on a pick-6 on a bad throw by our QB. They scored on a pick-6 where the ball bounced off the receiver's back into the hands of the defender who ran it 100 yards for a TD. They scored on another play where their QB made a perfect throw to a 6'8" receiver in the end zone. Then, at the end of the game, we missed a chip-shot field goal that would've sent the game to OT. I don't understand why this has been such an issue for us. Then we couldn't get our players on the field and lined up and had 12 men on the field to give Auburn a first down with 1:20 left in the game. That's not good coaching on Auburn's part. That's luck and poor coaching on Bama's part.

Jones is a gamer and comes across as a nice kids but you aren’t winning a title with him at QB. The game has changed too much. You need a legit game changing QB to win titles. Game managers don’t get it done any more. The college game has become basketball on grass at all levels and in all conferences. If Jones is QB next year Bama will win a lot of games but not title.
We'll still probably win another two more before any Big 12 team wins one, though, so there's that...

Sorry, I don’t buy this. We lost today because we had 13 penalties, had a bad call that significantly impacted the game, and threw two pick sixes. There was no emotional aspect of this game that decided it. We didn’t play well on defense and it falls squarely on coaching. Saban isn’t without fault by any means, but he will have to make the tough decision to get rid of Goulding. Young or not, there is too much talent to be this inept.

As for Jones, he is our starter next year and is probably as good as McCarron. Sark had a solid game plan that should have been enough.

I think part of the problem is that on the defensive side of the ball is that we have guys that just don’t play the game “between their ears”. The guys that could (McMillon, Mosley, Ray, etc) went out early. It was like time and time again the team could get lined up defensively. The Barn two point conversion NO ONE shifted over into coverage. Inexcusable!

I could excuse Lee and Harris early in the year, but when your filling the wrong gap consistently on runs and allowing RB’s to spring long runs, you need to work on your gray matter. And Benton and Kaho, guys with more experience and maturity doing the same...that is coaching.

You're right and I just don't like this kind of football. It's an ugly football. Coach Saban said it, is this the type of football we want? I'd answer that question with a "no."

I'm heartbroken, just heartbroken. Anyone got a cure besides a win that we didn't get? :(
I sympathize with your pain and broken-heart. Drink three six packs and call me in the morning. If that doesn't help, then drink three pints of Jack Daniels.

Maybe I'll prescribe that for myself also. Losing to the Barn is very DEPRESSING!!!!!!!
