I've been telling people to slow their roll on Young.... What he accomplished may/may not always translate to College level.
Not saying, based on those numbers, he's better. What I am saying is there's a reason for the hype.

I think it's human nature to "get excited" but I also think it's human nature to "play down" to avoid getting excited. But BY is not the run of the mill 5 star QB.

I"m playing this down because I'm not going to hype him up until I see what he is doing in the practice in the spring/summer/fall camp before I can say something to where it'll be like this: "Oh, that boy been killing it in the offseason and He's making noise in the fall camp as well. I think he will definitely push Mac/Tauila/Whoever for the job. You have to understand that Saban will play whoever is the best person on the field, but at the same time, he values the experience. He started Jalen Hurts... because he was the best option at that time. Now, With SEC West improving their teams.. (LSU, TAMU, Miss State, Ole Miss, etc...) We can't really afford to start Freshman and let him make mistakes on his own.

I still expect Young to be redshirted next year and still get a chance to play in 4 games.

I just wish he'd hurry up and sign today ! :)

I hope all the QB's stay.

Why are you bothered by some people being excited about him? Nobody is saying he's going to start OR that he's better than Mac Jones.

To me BY looked better than Tua in HS. Tua played against pretty poor competition in Hawaii, but he killed it in camps.
Which makes BY's HS stats even more "eye-popping."

Tua couldn't help that he played lesser competition in HS and it possibly held his development back some at that level. But one thing he did do is when he got into the "elite 11" camp he "exploded" on the scene and improved very fast and drastically. He did the same thing at Bama is freshman year and that's why we started hearing the rumors of him abusing our defense that year in practice. He's not only got incredible, elite natural skills but he's got the ability to learn fast too.

We don't know how BY will adapt yet and that could be all the difference in him playing early or not.

True but Bryce also plays for one of the HS super teams as i understand it. So I assume he had better talent around him than Tua did. I don't follow HS football closely though so I could be wrong?

Bryce Young is a Bama signee!!! We'll see what happens with Tua...but I feel alot better about our QB room with this guy in it now.

Think about what might happen next year:

1. Tua comes back - INCREDIBLE YEAR!

2. Mac wins the job outright, meaning he fought off some great young talent - think we can win and have a good offense with him

3. Young or Lia or Tysen emerge has "play now/best option" - which means we've got a GREAT "freshman" QB

Certainly as good. And Young is a "dual threat" QB. I think that is much more important in the modern game than it may have been 10 years ago or even 5 years ago. Suppose in camp he is close, but not quite as good as Mac in passing or reading defenses. Well, I think his legs would make up for it and I if I were coach I might give him the nod over Mac anyway. Jones will have to clearly show he's the far better passer to keep the starting job IMO.

Unless you have some insight into the practices and such, I don’t know how you can make that assumption.
I'm not assuming anything. The whole point of my post was to dissuade people from just assuming the guys behind Mac have more potential. They were all similarly ranked coming out of high school, and we've now seen Mac play pretty well against good competition. We can't say the same about Taulia or Tyson yet. I think Mac can be a really really good QB, not just serviceable.

I think it's fairly obvious that as soon as Tua leaves, Bryce Young will have the most potential of any QB on the roster. But that's all it is right now. We don't know for sure how he will pan out. That's all I was saying.

As good as Tua was when he got to campus, it’s not like a week later CNS told Jalen to go hold a clipboard. How many times has CNS said that a QB has to win the team, in addition to being the most impressive to the coaches. That’s where Mac will have the inside track (obviously that assumes no Tua).

Saban prizes experience and reliability. Mac has years in the system and will have started some important high-profile games. We should not expect a named starter until quite late in fall camp next year, if then. I could imagine a replay of the Jalen-Tua transition, which is you go with the veteran during the regular season, while getting as many snaps as possible to the frosh. I would not expect BY named as starter as a foregone conclusion, at all.

However, we are thrilled to have him aboard, this is excellent all the way around, and is already paying dividends in recruiting.

What I am a saying is that unless you have first hand knowledge or insight into the practices, all you or any of us can do is assume. You assume that the younger guys don’t have more potential than Mac. I, along with some others, feel like there is more potential than Mac.

You, me and everyone else can assume anything that we want because that is what we are on this forum to do. We have the GOAT to make the decisions for the team. I am confident he will play our best option to win.

As far as Mac, if he is the choice, then he will have 100% of my support. I support the team! Just win!!!!

QB is a "show me" position. There is more to the position than simply being a good thrower. I'm excited that we signed a great talent but I would caution against thinking he will start next year. If Tua could not get on the field until the team's back was against the wall, it would suggest that we shouldn't expect Young to immediately beat out a QB with some starting experience. Mac Jones will have less separation than Hurts who was the SEC OPotY as a Freshman but there will undoubtedly be some separation.

Whoever it is who starts at QB, I just hope the backup gets lots of reps in practice too. You never know when an injury will happen, especially with the injuries Bama has had the past 3 years.

The backup needs to run the normal plays in the 4th quarter too, not just hand off the ball for 5 minutes.

This is all I want to happen every year, every play. I’m so tired of handing off when the game is in hand.

The new rule for a freshman to play 4 games will really be an advantage. If BY makes some moves in the spring and fall, CNS has the luxury of getting him some real playing time without burning a year's eligibility.

Good points. But when you listen to CNS talk about BY, much of it is about leadership and character. I think his talent is obvious for all to see, but I have a feeling the staff sees a "leader" in BY that may affect the game, locker room and culture of the team.

And if the natural talent is there...it may get him on the field faster than Tua.
