I don't know the details of the TV contracts, so I can't refute your argument but common sense says that it's not simply that a program resides in a particular state, but how many eyeballs are interested from that state. I mentioned the Bama/AU comparison - IMO, there is no way that Alabama does not add to the value of a TV contract when that conf already has AU. This is analogous to UTx and A&M.

There may be better targets, but IMO, UTx should add significant value to any TV deal. I would like to see in black and white where that is not true. (I'm even willing to read a long post :).)

(Trying to save you some work: I realize that when cable was predominant that having reach within a state's border had great meaning, but I'm guessing that has changed. Also, I realize that existing contracts may preclude immediate benefit. I'm just guessing that in general that interested eyes are far more meaningful than just living eyes :). E.g., you can have the state of NY but how many are interested in college ball other than ND? Not many. Surely, TV execs and sponsors have more sense now.)
Can someone PLEASE explain this one to me?

Why is it "Texas got money" and that does something? I'm asking sincerely.

Texas THINKS that "well, we got all this money, therefore"....I mean WHAT?

What is it about them that adds so much so-called value to whatever?

Wanna know how many Texas games I watch despite having lived 18 of the last 20 years here in Texas?

1) sometimes the OU game
2) really big games like Ohio State back in 05 and 06 that are pretty rare nowadays
3) some of their bowl games, maybe

I mean, I could care less.

My Longhorn friend who has never said (with me around anyway) anything bout "But Colt" is now back to the same insane level arrogant he was when they fooled us into keeping Saban so they could hire Charlie Strong.

I'm not trying to go full drama queen here, but those of you who don't live here or haven't spent a lot of time here know the TV caricature of these folks, which is largely accurate. They are the lead white villains in "Blazing Saddles" (Harvey Korman and Slim Pickens and even Mel Brooks).

But when you live here it's not even comical, it's like living among an alternative universe of people whose thoughts echo from side to side in their own heads, and they think it's a crowd.

That's about as many as I've watched in more than 30 years here.

BTW - in 2011, the year before A&M joined the SEC, the most watched regular season game in Houston was.............Bama v Florida

I do not understand how this expansion helps current SEC teams.
I get the part about Texas and OU being "brand names," which drives up the price of the TV contract payouts - which in the SEC (unlike everywhere Texas has destroyed blown up played before) is EQUAL REVENUE SHARING.

I can believe that.

I mean, they've botched at least 2 coaching hires, a TV network, and two conferences.

They're now qualified to run for President of the US.

Apparently once texas joins, the entire state is going to send all their money to the SEC office and share it with all the slums that are not texas and can never achieve the greatness that is texas.

I mean, I could care less.
You probably could care less but could you not care less?

I’m torn on this whole deal. I like A&M. They’ve been great conference partners. I’m also excited about the possibilities with OU and Texas. I really enjoyed that A&M/Texas game every year. Yet, I’m fully aware of and disgusted by the UT arrogance. While I don’t think they can bring down the SEC, they can certainly make life miserable.

But this is going somewhere. It’s apparent college football is consolidating. Hopefully the SEC just grabs a hold of the right rung on the merry go round.

I just hate how much this limits the SEC and how much this opens things up for the Big 10. The SEC did so well last time by letting everyone else scurry around, while they waited to make the right move. So the Big 10 adds Nebraska, the Pac-12 adds mighty Utah and Colorado, and then the SEC blows everyone's moves away by adding Texas A&M and Missouri.

Now the SEC is going to go all in (exceeding 16 teams seems unlikely in the foreseeable future) on Texas and Oklahoma? They are going to play their ace in the hole (9th conference game) and basically stand pat having gained the mighty territory of Oklahoma? That's their final move? They do understand that having half the football powers doesn't actually give them half the votes with the committee right?

Texas/Oklahoma/Alabama/Georgia and so on are actually going to see a net loss in their influence over things like the playoff (since the Big 12 won't be advocating for Oklahoma or Texas). They are not making the right moves to gain true nationwide power.

Meanwhile the Big 10 is sitting there going hmm... do we go for Southern Cal and UCLA? North Carolina or Virginia? Notre Dame and Stanford? They will have all the options and the SEC will be sitting and watching. Heck they might decide they want to add Texas A&M who the SEC is kind of screwing over right now.

If the SEC really wanted to just take over college football like some have said, wouldn't it be actually be bigger moves? Wouldn't you go for Southern Cal and Notre Dame or something?

Also, I'm done with hearing about who won't join the SEC. I heard that about Missouri. I also heard that about Texas and Oklahoma and now they're begging to join. The SEC is making so much money that they, with enough patience, could have their pick of a lot of schools in a lot of states. California, North Carolina, Virginia... no idea why they're choosing Oklahoma.

I think what some are missing is that Texas and OU are looking to blow up the BIG12. They have pretty much maxed out their moneystream and are looking to shore things up long term Or get left behind! Probably the thinking in the SEC offices Are If Texas and OU are looking, that means another round of conference realignment is coming. I’m sure the Commish and SEC presidents would rather have UT and OU than see them jump to the B1G or less likely the ACC . Although I am aware of the AAU membership requirement of the B1G.
What other schools could you seriously bring aboard and add more value?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m against Texas joining. I just see why theconference could be forced to allow it!

1. If Texas adds so much to any conference they join -- why are they leaving the conference they are in?

2. if Texas brings so much to the SEC then the SEC ought to bow to their $$$ and academic superiority and let them keep the LHN and a bigger share of the SEC pie. Fair is only fair.

This is a pretty telling article about expansion:
If the SEC does add Texas they are breaking a ""gentlemen's agreemen" and basically going back on their word. Not a good way to add a team that's know for causing problems.

This was also said: ""Loftin said most expansion discussion centered on schools such as North Carolina, NC State, Virginia or Virginia Tech, all schools in states with no SEC members."

So, the SEC knew who they needed to add, knew they couldn't add Texas and somehow we're still talking about a move that barely changes the SEC's geographical footprint...
I thought it was more than an gentleman's agreement. It was more akin to a voting bloc with USCe and Florida trying to keep out Clemson and FSU . If they vote along those lines and add Arky , Mizzou or add UK (Louisville) , they would have enough no votes !

I did read about a voting block as well, yes. But my understanding was also it was just generally not something the SEC was even going to try and do. I am positive that Texas A&M was under this impression when they joined.

The interesting thing is these additions change the makeup and potentially limit the power of certain voting blocs. If this does go through I imagine we're just going to be done with gentlemen's agreements of any sort and we're going to see what ever has the votes getting through.

Texas doesn't care about other programs in the conference. They got to the Big 12 and moved everything to Texas, helped destroy the Nebraska/Oklahoma rivalry and participated in unequal revenue sharing. They're not going to the SEC to be a good neighbor.

This was my point last night. They've got to be showing some serious Jerry Maguire money here for this to have gotten this far.

On the other hand, it would be fun to actually just you know - go beat the hell out of them, too.
