Russia drafts 134,500 more conscripts. Hmmm ....

The Russian military drafts in April and October every year.
They rarely meet their draft goals. Russians mothers will have their sons declared mentally ill (even though that will have life-long implications) to avoid having them drafted. Individual young men will maim themselves to render themselves undraftable.
And, at the same time, Russian cannot attract enough "professional" soldiers (volunteers), so they have to draft to fill the units.
It is illegal to send draftees out of the Russian Federation, except in time of war. Putin declared this a "special military operation," so legally, they cannot be deployed to Ukraine.
Draftees who die in Ukraine will be a political liability. The Kremlin can hide some of that for a while, but as draftee deaths mount, it will be more difficult;lt to hide from the public. Just like in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

IICR, the worst kind of morons are stupid morons.

What that story doesn't make clear is that Putin also loses 134,500 now-trained (supposedly) conscripts on April 1. On CNN, they put up a map to illustrate just what sort of task is posed by trying to reposition the troops the way they say they want to...

Imagine the Russian military as a conveyor belt. New Russians soldiers are brought on board, they have to be trained, the Russian Army get some use out of them, then they separate. The time on the conveyor belt is 12 months, from start to finish. This puts a very real cap on how well they can be trained.
In October the next round of the draft and the process begins anew.
Although the idea that the RF armed forces must discharge those drafted last April might be true, that is an assumption. Russia might hang on to the guys drafted one year ago, and add this year's draftees. I am not saying I have heard that they are doing that, but, if the government can send draftees into a foreign war illegally, it would probably not have a problem keeping those scheduled for discharge while inducting the new guys.

april fools, russian warship
Of course, given the Benny Hill theme song now used by the Russian army as its theme song, it could well have been Russian helicopters that shot up the Belgorod fuel dump.
"Ivan, shoot your rockets."
"At what coordinates?"
"Coordinates? Look, Ivan, the Russian Army pays you to shoot rockets, now point this helicopter and shoot your dadgum* rockets!"

* Whatever the Russian equivalent word is for "dadgum."
