Well a lot of Simpson’s problems are trying to impress coaches instead of making reads. The talent is there but for whatever reason he can’t calm down enough to just give the staff confidence in him.

TB is alot more talented than what most people on here are giving him credit for. Hartman was just a more talented guy.

Going into the fall it’s probably 1a TB and 1b Simpson.
Sounds reasonable. I wonder how much of his problems are left over from his HS days of having to run for his life and improvise (kinda like Bryce had to do on the college level at Bama last year)?

From watching TS's film, he had to bail out of the pocket a lot. It sounds like he's struggling with just doing the basics well, which is really what sets the best players apart from the average ones.

So the "rumor" article I saw circulating on social media (that I didn't click on) quoting Pawwwwl Fbaum saying he'd "heard" Milroe is beginning to separate himself from the other QB's isn't true?

If that's the case at the end of August camp, I'd expect Milroe to transfer before the first game.

Honestly, I couldn't blame him. If it works out the way you predict, Milroe would be in his third year in the program, and running third string behind a new transfer and a RSFr who has had exactly zero meaningful snaps. And the #1 QB in the country coming in the next signing class.

A lot of that is due to Stephen M Smith and his contingent over there trying to pump up Milroe. Yes Milroe is well liked on the team and he went to Florida to train with the receivers but what Finebaum and Smith conveniently leave out is that all of the quarterbacks are doing the same thing.

I haven't gone back to watch any of Simson's snaps from last season, but what I saw in the spring game didn't concern me. I thought he played well, but I thought the receivers didn't, which is perhaps more concerning than which QB is the starter. I wonder how much of him moving out of the pocket is related to the A-Day game being two-hand touch on the QBs.

With that said, if Milroe can develop in any kind of significant way as a passer between the A-Day game and the MTSU game, then I imagine he will be the starter because of the dynamic he brings that Simpson and Buchner can't.

I had to explain to a Bama friend of mine who was drinking the Stephen smith Kool-Aid that if TB or TY asked the receivers to go train, they wouldn't say no. I also find it weird that some bama fans I talk to will make such a big deal about Milroe going down to south Florida because of chemistry reasons, And then in the same breath downplay TB having a prior relationship with Tommy Rees. Having a good relationship with your team is important don't get me wrong, but having a good relationship with your OC is also very important.

Obviously, neither of them are on Milroes level as a runner, but ty is pretty elusive and Buchner is actually deceptively fast and more mobile than he gets credit for.

Keep in mind that the A-day game is scripted. Saban typically scripts it so a quarterback looks good to give them confidence and to get fans off his back. He started doing this after 2014.

But I can tell you with 100% certainty both quarterbacks were horrendous in spring practice. Neither could hit a crossing route or complete a pass on the goal line.

This is where I am, too. I'm not certain Milroe's mind is ready to make good reads in real time - not unlike when Hurts was at Bama. Not saying he doesn't have an NFL career ahead of him - he has a very high ceiling - but until I see it it will remain a question mark in my mind.
Other than a couple plays, I don't recall Milroe having issues with reading the defense. I'll admit one was pretty bad. Certainly the one everybody remembers. It's gonna be interesting to see who starts in September, who stays, and who hits the portal.

Really can't figure the "trying to impress the coaches" deal with Simpson. Kid is talented which is why he is on campus so he just needs to play his game. Sounds like a confidence problem to me. Regarding Buckner, I always thought he was brought in for leadership that maybe the two battling in the Spring did not have. That also hints to confidence. The only reservation about TB is that his coach at ND went to the transfer portal and brought in a QB that beat him out then he transfers to Bama following his OC. Obviously the kid is talented and again, I think leadership is needed and Rees knew the kid is solid between the ears (confidence). But he does not seem on the surface to be anywhere the caliber of player we have been putting into the NFL lately so that is the reservation. There is a reason he is on campus, however, so I am glad he is here.

Yea, I love the kid but he just has to stop handing the ball over to the defense.

The guy who beat TB was like all everything qb that has been playing college football for Hunter renfrow/Stetson Bennett amount of years. LOL

Im not willing to disclose the source because of reasons, but many close to situation are surprised that Milroe didn’t transfer out.

More or less this isn’t a Blake Sims situation like many try to spin it. Milroe winning the job at this point would be a shocker and signal a huge leap in progression over the summer. The assumption now is that either TB is going to be the placeholder for Sayin or Simpson is going to be a long term guy.

Milroe at practice makes insane throws that generates a bunch of oohs and ahhs, but he can’t hit a guy on a slant on a consistent basis. There were literally times where he threw interceptions to a linebacker that never moved from his starting position. Simpson’s knock was he kept trying to show off his arm to compete with Milroe when there was an easy slant or out route that was wide open. Simpson trying to hit a deep ball or that “Hollywood” type throw is the reason for most of his issues this spring.

And they were likely going up against the best defense in the country. At least I think they will be up there with the best. It's hard to tell much from Spring. We'll probably see 2, maybe 3, quarterbacks against Middle Tennessee. Maybe that'll clear things up before the Longhorns come to town.

If true, I really hope Simpson gets it together. Still think he could be good

Like I said… the casual fan only sees a dog and pony show scrimmage and a few media moments . Spring practice is alot more in-depth and intense than what people think. Saban and the staff make alot of key decisions on depth in the spring and this spring they were not looking at the possibility of a transfer quarterback until the second scrimmage.
