Pretty prominent republicans, including the candidate for VP, the former guy and current candidate for president's son, Carlson, and others closely related to Trump promoting this book as a "how to fight back". I don't think it ends well for many of us if these people win.

We never should have invaded Iraq or stayed in Afghanistan. Nation building doesn’t work in the vast majority of the world and puts Americans in harms way. Blow stuff up if you absolutely have to and then come home. Rebuild it yourself.
No arguments there. We had a few spirited discussions on the subject of the Iraq invasion on this board.

In general, we just have had no luck in that area of the Middle East; not sure exactly why. I had no problems with the initial attempt at nation building in Afghanistan--we blew the hell out of their country, we needed to do something to help them out--but it became quickly apparent that the Afghan government had no interest other than seeing how much money they could leech from the US.

I have heard a story on Tim Walz that I want to share the Paul Harvey "Rest of the Story" with the members of the board.
I heard that Walz did not serve out his enlistment with his National Guard unit to avoid a deployment to Iraq in 2006.

Now the rest of the story.
Not quite the rest of the story. He retired in 2005 in order to run for Congress. In 2006, he beat a seven-term Republican incumbent, Gil Gutknecht.

Another factor may have been long term ear damage from being an artilleryman. He had surgery in 2005 to correct the damage.

Both true, but members of the National Guard can run for Congress while still in the National Guard.
Sergeants Major do not spend much time around cannons. "Gun bunnies" (Military Occupational Specialty 13B, Fire Artilleryman), are the guys working the guns. That is when the hearing loss happens. By the time an NCO makes 1SG (E-8) he's not around cannons that much. By the time he is an E-9, he is not around cannons at all unless he chooses to be. Plus, if the injury is service-connected, he can stay on Active Duty to receive medical treatment for the hearing loss (assuming there is a treatment)..

Trump called soldiers who died in war losers and suckers, that side has shown over and over that they don't care about any of it so no I don't agree

Play a video of President Trump saying that.

He did not say it publicly.
He said it behind closed doors.

And before you say CNN fake news, read the article and see who is confirming the statements.
Trumps Chief of Staff, John Kelly, a retired Marine General.

“Despite publicly praising the military and claiming to be the most pro-military president, there’s a demonstrable record of Trump bashing the most decorated service members in our country, from Gen. Mattis to Kelly to Milley, to criticizing the wounded or deceased like John McCain. Donald Trump will fundamentally never understand service the way those who have actually served in uniform will, and it’s one of the countless reasons he’s unfit to be commander in chief.”

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that while members of the National Guard may well be able to run for Congress, campaigning while deployed overseas might be problematic.

It may be true that E-9s aren't around the cannons much. He wasn't always an E-9, though.

In any event, I'm sure that the facts will come out in due course, just as I'm sure that if the facts don't agree with the right's argument, said facts will be duly ignored.

I have to say.....we are in for a bunch of salvos back and forth about all kinds of stuff. Tampons, exiting National Guard service, the riots and burning down buildings stuff....and there are/will be more.

But the way I see it.......there are many voters who have long yearned for candidates who appear more like normal people. I don't know about Harris....(although her stopping that dumb laughing has helped a LOT!)....but thanks to his mid-west upbringing, years spent as an educator and football coach....and county/state fair photos......Walz right now is giving those voters what they've been waiting for.

For me that's how I see it in the big picture....regardless of how one feels about the politics of it all......

Also, If he retired two months before his unit get their deployment orders, he probably put in for retirement well in advance--my Army buddy says it generally takes 9 months to process. So, if you have evidence that he found out that his unit would be deployed overseas about a year before anyone else was notified, and then put in his retirement paperwork, let's see it.

The reason we have no luck there is two fold in my opinion. One is corruption. That’s was a major problem in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was both in country and contractors brought in to do things. The other is the fact that strict adherence to Islam and western style democracy don’t go together. Moderate Muslims can adapt to that style of government just fine, but you get the more radical adherents and it just doesn’t work. The two don’t mesh.

Iraq had always been fairly secular, so they had a decent chance.

Saddam kept it that way, but when he was removed it let all kinds of other baddies come out to play and enter into the country from lovely places like Iran. I just think overall nation building is a bad idea and the rejection of it should be a cornerstone of American foreign policy. We need to have defined objectives that when achieved signal we are out. If we can't have those then going in may not be worth it.
