After looking at the game again we need to get another edge type on the field in 3rd and lord instead of three heavies. But I was pleasantly surprised how we stoned their run game.

Or just flipped to the short passing game. They were not going after Milroe. He would have picked them apart. But DeBoer wanted to run clock, so he ran into the teeth of a great defense.
well, if he wanted to run clock he should have told Jalen to always snapped with 5 secs or fewer left on the the play clock, which it does not appear that he did. If that’s what happened, it’s disappointing and hard to believe.

One of the very few good things about growing old is that, if you keep your eyes and mind open, you learn stuff.

Yesterday, I learned the difference between a 28-0 lead against an inferior team vs. a 28-0 lead against a Top 5 team.

If you're leading Eastern Podunk Sisters of the Poor by 4 TDs, you probably have the game in hand. If you're leading a Top 5 team who is a legit contender for the NC, let alone playoff, the game isn't close to in hand.

IOW, never mind the score, the strategies going forward from a big lead differ greatly depending on the quality of the opponent.

Eastern Podunk Sisters of the Poor doesn't truly have the horses to dig out of the hole. But you know that a NC contender, even down a bunch, won't stay that way. They're still a good to elite team with good to elite ability to dig out.

Against EPSOTP, up 28-0, your goal changes from, (1) winning the game, to (2) getting out of the game as quickly as possible and without injury. You play conservative, drain clock, and just get the hell out of Dodge. You probably still score 2-3 more TDs simply because you have superior athletes.

Against a Top 5 team, you know they're too good to stay down 28-0. They're coming back....the question is how much, how fast, and how far.

So you dance with the one that brung ya. Keep the pedal to the metal on offense and defense. Cut out the high-risk trickeration, but otherwise keep on doing what got you there in the first place.

What I learned is that protecting a big lead isn't strictly a function of down, distance, points and the clock. It's a function of all that, plus the quality of the opposing team.

I'll have to go watch again as well, but there were several times we had Koht and Robinson out there at the same time. I don't love how we use them sometimes, lined up more over the OGs in 2 point stances trying to rush gaps. I guess that grouping did lead to the safety so it's not like it wasn't somewhat successful, but we brought the house on that play.

That's also one of the things that somewhat changed from Saban to Womack. Womack runs 2 pure heavies, then one medium (Overton and Latham) and one light. It's like 2 300+ dudes, a 270-280 dude and then a 250 (ideal) or 240 (what we have). Saban would run 3 true heavies a lot so 3 guys all around 300, and one light, or he'd run it 2 and 2.

It is normal for teams to adjust at halftime, so you have to be prepared as a coach to pivot after you see what they have changed. Alabama just didn't. I suspect that DeBoer just refused to believe that GA could climb all the way back, especially after Alabama stopped them so easily on their first possession of the second half. He was wrong. He will learn from it.
This, 100%. And to be fair, when’s the last time you saw a team go 5 for 5 in 4th down conversions (and really 7 for 7 when you add in our penalties)? We stuff even one of those 4th downs and we likely blow it wide open.

I would be surprised if anyone on Tidefans saw us leading UGA 30-7 at the half. I also don't think anyone could imagine UGA outscoring us 27-11 in the second half. Most all of our recent matchups with UGA have been battles in the trenches, and less passing than we saw Saturday night. My point is that while the closeness of the final score looks like a typical UA v UGA game how both teams reached those numbers was anything but typical.

Post from dawg sports

Saban recruited the kids we played last night. It’ll take a while for them to matriculate out of the system. We’ll have to see what kind of recruiting they can do from here on out.
We are number two in recruiting right now. Good lord They went from beating there chest about saban being gone to saying "his recruits" are the reason they lost. That Fanbase has an excuse for everything.
