The Decline of the American Media III

CBS has cancelled the Late Show after a 30 year run with the last 10 being hosted by Stephen Colbert. Its been the highest rated show in it's time slot for years. This comes after CBS paid trump 16 million to settle a nuisance lawsuit. I heard that Redstone stands to pocket 2B if the merger with Skydance gets federal approval and goes through.
Anybody see a connection here?

Good. Being the highest rated show in that time slot is like being acknowledged as the prostitute with the least STD's. I mean, look at the competition for crying out loud. Furthermore, a "free" network TV show was getting beaten by a cable talk show on FN that people actually had to pay for. That is inconceivable, but nevertheless true.

I'm pretty sure Kimmel is next. Both of these clowns alienated roughly half the country and I'm reasonably certain they don't understand why said people weren't tuning in. The only thing I will remember Colbert for is having dancers dressed up as syringes and promoting the COVID jabs with some of the cringiest nonsense I've ever seen. I was asking myself, "Where is this man's dignity?" Then I realized he probably never had any.

Slowly but surely, the money-changers in this country are coming around to the fact that profits and losses still outweigh stupid idealism. If they were ever insane enough to try to drown us with MAGA idealism, they will learn this lesson again....harshly.

Stephen Colbert hasn't been funny since he left "The Colbert Report."

I also think the day of the late night talk show has ended much as the day of game shows and Saturday morning cartoons ended.

Remember the whole fracas with Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno back around 2010 or so? I was watching Leno the night he announced that Conan was the next host beginning in 2009. And all I remember thinking was, "Conan O'Brien is not even funny ACCIDENTALLY." So I knew then that I wouldn't exactly be watching "Tonight" any longer.

I'm out of the choice demographic now, but at the time I was between 25 and 49 - and it was people like me who weren't watching that unfunny twit that caused that entire thing. If Conan had pulled in Leno type ratings, he never would have lost the gig.

Criticizing the people who pay you always works out for the best.

Warren posted a clip from Colbert’s monologue Monday in which he blisteringly mocked Paramount Global over its payout to Trump in a dispute over a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election. Paramount is seeking approval from Trump’s Federal Communications Commission for its merger deal with entertainment giant Skydance, Colbert noted.

“I believe this kind of complicated financial settlement with a sitting government official has a technical name in legal circles: it’s big, fat bribe,” Colbert quipped.

Once again, we see a progressive elitist assuming he is above reproach. One would think these nitwits would eventually learn.

I think Colbert is pretty funny and I think he has telling the truth here. Pretty disappointing of CBS to bow to Trump, but greed is powerful.
Colbert has always left me stone-faced, but truthfully, most comedians do. My sense of humor has always been.......quirky. Yeah, let's go with that. And besides, even if I did find him funny, he is still competing with my phone and streaming services. That's just gonna be a loss any way you slice it.

As for CBS, there is more to this than simple greed, IMO. Would Trump have won this case had it actually gone to court? I honestly doubt it. No, the REAL threat would have been discovery. I'd bet my vintage 1954 Bippy on it. CBS knows their credibility has already been shredded (just like the other networks, but like them, they are holding on to hope they can somehow regain the trust they've lost with the news-consuming public.)

If Trump had beaten CBS in court, that would have been precedent-setting and I don't see our judicial system allowing that to happen. And while Trump can sway the FCC with his appointments, he is by no means in control of them. Some well-placed kickbacks would solve a lot of problems. So yeah, I am convinced that the merger wasn't the only consideration.

You must not value your vintage 1954 Bippy ( :) ) much because you would have lost it. The case was a simple shakedown and Redstone folded because she wanted the merger money and trump could have held it up, plain and simple.

My vintage 1954 Bippy is highly coveted among collectors of Things That Don't Actually Exist. And no, it is perfectly safe.

Honest question: do you think that the stunt that 60 Minutes pulled is in any way ethical? It's one thing to know that as a company, CBS, by and large, wanted Harris to win. But to put it on full display like that? I mean, yeah, they got caught and their hand was forced, but it left no doubt that they were trying to affect the outcome of the election. The only question was this: how deeply did this go and who were the people directly involved who made this decision? Methinks a lot of people would sleep easier if this information never saw the light of day.

Plus, $17 million is chump-change to a guy like Trump. Why that amount? Did he possibly also elicit a pinkie-swear from CBS that this would never, ever happen again? Or perhaps some other nefarious offer? After all, Trump is hardly clean as a whistle; maybe an agreement was reached that some of the investigative journalism regarding his past business deals would magically go away. That sounds like a D.C. agreement for sure. All I know is, there is more to this than a simple shakedown. I am absolutely convinced of it.

If you look into the details, the edited part was easily available elsewhere . Edits are usually made to interviews (time, interest etc) and this one was not all that substancial. Trump might as well actually come out and said like a gangster in a protection shakedown " I wouldn't want anything to happen to your merger".

@Bazza posted a side-by-side comparison of the original and edited version and the difference was more than substantial. I mean, yeah, she still sounds like an idiot in both, but damn that original was brutal to watch. There is no question they were trying to make her look and sound less dumb in the edited version.

I saw the 60 Min II version and the complete thing and it appeared to me to be no big deal 🤷‍♂️

Just one of those things where we have to agree to disagree. And that’s okay; for what it’s worth, I do hope the Dems can up their game and make the next election more competitive. It forces both sides to try a little harder.

They had the 3 biggest idiots they could find in Joetato, Camala, and tampon tim the last go around. Surely they can do better than those clowns? That 18% approval rating is looking rough.

Late night TV is in its death rattle. If I watch late night, it's Youtube, usually history...
Precisely. To be honest, the only thing that draws me to network TV at all is the occasional sporting event. That's literally it. I can't remember the last time I watched network TV outside of football or basketball, but I can tell you it has been over a decade at the very least. Maybe even two.

My immediate reaction to this question was, "Of course they can do better!" Then I actually sit and think about it and........well, the ole magic 8-ball isn't giving me much. At best, they've got Manchin, Sinema and Fetterman. That's literally the cream of the crop in this party.
