Hmm... Do we now have a QB controversy?

Ty is the solid front-runner while Mack and Russell are neck and neck in my view.

I liked how all 3 of them got good playing time. Saban used to only have the 2nd (and maybe a 3rd stringer) doing handoffs only.
I think playing more guys will be beneficial all the way around. Have more guys ready for the long season, guys getting snaps will be less likely to portal...

But, uhh, context is needed. Putting the frosh CB in at Georgia was too much too soon.

We don't see many successful tall golfers, tall pitchers or tall QB's in the NFL. Mahomes and others are prototypes. where speed, control, touch and preciseness are required.
And that's a change from when Ernie Els at 6'4" was perceived to have an advantage and Peyton Manning at 6'5" was considered the ideal height for a QB, the better to see over the defense and his own OLs...

I have met a number of college and pro players including QB's over my years of recruiting. I recognize that even Mahomes would seem very tall and quite large to many of us mortals. The QB's just appear small compared to the other giants on the field. I was thinking of Jarred Golf and others who have struggled to make the throws and win the big games over the years. I can't define the sweet spot for QB's but sort of recognize when I see it.

No at this point, Ty went from having the first downfield TD pass of his career in this game, to a somewhat historic (albeit short) performance.

I'm hoping this is the breakout performance Ty needed to really gain his footing. Having said that, if he struggles I think Mack has the potential to step in, but there's no reason to believe the job is up for grabs. Mack has gaudy 230 QB rating for his career in very limited playing time, and to give an example Simpson threw 50 passes as a backup and had 0 passing TDs, Mack has thrown 13 and has 3 TDs.

So, I also don't think this will be like last year where no matter what they were going to go with Milroe. If there's a reason to play Mack, they probably trust him enough to do so. As far as Keelon, if AJ is to be believed he's just not ready yet, which is understandable given he's a true freshman. I think he shows enough to have a lot of hope for the future though.

I honestly don’t recall Russell making a play that was any more “wow” than Ty’s best plays. And Ty was playing against La Monroe’s best (which wasn’t that great) while Russell was playing against their scrubs (who were really bad).

Mack seemed to be behind the WR on most of his throws. Russell did show some brilliant potential. I think the future is bright if we can hang on to them and fend off the portal.

It was also nice to see several WRs step up in this game. And the different playcalling style that apparently we were expected to show vs FSU.

I hope to see both backup QBs get reps throughout the season as much as possible.
I remember Tua playing as a backup when he was freshman, having his moments, even holding for field goals, then at the end of the year he wasn’t so much of a freshman anymore. 2d and 26 happened.

I can’t believe Ty went 17-17 for 226 Yards 3 Passing TDs and a Rushing TD and I’m STILL reading “but did you see QB3!!” type comments.

Ty could not possibly play better or anyone else for that matter.

He set a damn school record.

Q3 is parked in the garage for the year barring injuries.

Ty earned this.
A lot of people just can’t get “Well, if he’s so good, why couldn’t he beat out Milroe” out of their heads…

It has always boggles my mind when some team says they are struggling because they had a 2-3 year starter leave and they don't have an experienced QB. You look back and see many 30-40 point blow outs and each year the back up QB has thrown 2-3 passes all year.

Guess the portal can partly solve that though...

That’s some of it.

Another reason is a few seem to have a grudge against him for it taking a different timeline than what was expected for him to win the job.

He didn’t immediately take the reins in a decided way in 2023 so it’s his fault for some reason that now he can’t be objectively judged.

What bothers me the most though is the obsession with the QB3 and negatively judging Ty against someone else’s ceiling of potential.

We haven’t even seen Ty’s ceiling yet.

He played Good to even Pretty Good last week in extremely sub optimal conditions and kept us alive and didn’t do anything harmful.

The OL and Defense and his WR2 and Grubbs play calling did nothing to help him.

Last night he was PERFECT in his execution of the Offense.

He made the Best throw of the night to I believe it was Horton in the EZ.

He consistently hits WRs in the hands and on stride so they can do something with it.

QB3 will win the job next year or the next or maybe he won’t but he has his own path of development to take right now.

He’s not Jayden Daniels yet. Jayden Daniels wasn’t even “Jayden Daniels” until his final year as a SR.

Some are going to be real upset I guess if Ty comes back another year and keeps the job.

A better question is what on earth did the coaching staff see in practice that kept Ty off the field last year?
I know he now has another year under the system to mature and learn and grow, but man, QB last years was so Jeckyll & Hyde. (1st half UGA, LSU game vs Vandy, UTe, and OU). Maybe the high side was higher but the low side was so much lower, it makes it difficult to game plan for Jeckyll & Hyde. I would think having a QB that can play very well on a consistent basis is easier to game plan for.

It was because of Lank/NIL/Portal stuff.

Ty played like this or at least mostly like this last fall camp too.

He’s has given the Defense fits in practice for a long time now.

He never was given a fair chance last year.

He’s always been a better option than Milroe.

Of course, the Bama-ULM game becomes exhibit A in that argument (even though it was only against ULM).
Oh well,, water under the bridge. On to Wisconsin.

I really think the job requirements have shift, interestingly enough, from the colleges upwards, when it's historically been colleges adopting NFL principles. Colleges were the first to utilize the dual-purpose QB, many times as a matter of necessity. As the requirement of height shrank and the requirements of mobility and athleticism grew, the NFL eventually stopped treating the QB as if he were made of fine crystal and not to be risked running to people like Mahomes. I'd bet the average height of the pro QB has shrunk by 2" or so over the last 25 years...

Throw of the game was the Horton touchdown pass.

I think I enjoyed Russell’s throws more than Mack’s because Russell’s throws looked just as hard but were placed in good spots.

It’s a fun discussion: did the nfl adapt because the only quarterbacks they could choose from were smaller, more athletic dual threats? Far more of those floating around than there are Austin Mack sized guys.
