Link: 2026 Transfer Portal

No, the old way of thinking is building entirely through recruiting. I'm not saying that. We gotta get some people in the portal, but they don't have to be sexy names, they just to need be solid players who fit well with what we want to do. And we've done that so far. We just gotta get a few more guys. Teams have tried to build completely through the portal and there hsve been mixed results. Florida State has been a complete disaster on that front, save for their one good year. That's the thing with building through the portal. It's difficult to get chemistry when you just throw a full roster together just from the portal. That's why Bama continues to save most of their money for high school recruiting. You can say they won't stay or whatever, but we still have 95% of DeBoer's first class, so I do think that notion is overblown a bit. Yes, it's difficult to keep depth, but that's gonna be the case whether you build through the portal or not. Yes, we've lost a few guys who were projected to start (mostly for a bigger bag) but the overwhelming majority of players who were projected to start, have continued to stay. Obviously not every school is having the same experience, but being the starter at Bama still means something.
I agree. I think you build your program culture via the traditional recruiting methods and then bring in those older transfer players to push the talent over the top. Clemson and FSU are cautionary tales on both extremes of the process. Indiana is really a look at how winning may occur going forward. Bama can modify this approach by recruiting those 5 stars and backfilling with older 3 stars and get the best of both worlds.

Cignetti at Indiana is unique in that he really actually did this, he just brought them from James Madison, importing that culture from his previous job and backfilled with actual portal players.

Noah Rogers is a nice high potential addition.

Bray announcing he's returning is a plus as well.

Edit: Since I've been updating it, it's finally trending in the other direction. With these additions, the portal class it out of last place in the SEC and is ahead of Georgia and only one spot behind Tennessee in total number.

Overall they've moved up to 31. Hoping for a bit more volume but they last three additions have certainly addressed needs. Would expect a running back at some point as well.

Here is his high school review from 247Sports. Another good pick-up.

Verified size with verified sub 4.5 speed and plus length. Also competes in track. Productive big-play receiver averaged 20.5 yards and had 22 touchdowns on 70 catches. Smooth route runner. Gets off line and into routes well. Gets out of breaks and accelerates to gain separation. Adjusts well to off-target throws and shows excellent ball skills. His sure-handed and willing to make plays in traffic. Exhibits body control and makes acrobatic catches look easy. Knows how to use size to shield defensive back. High-points ball well and excels on 50-50 balls. Shows ability to pierce defense and make big play after catch. Demonstrates some elusiveness after the catch but is at best when securing catch and getting up field. Consistently gets behind defense despite facing very little press coverage. Knows how to sit in holes against zone. Willing blocker. Has strength throughout frame but will need to continue to develop strength. Fine-tuning route running and being a bit sharper into breaks will help. High level receiver at Top 10 college program. Early round NFL draft potential.

As I mentioned earlier, HS recruiting needs to focus on the guys you believe can be early contributors like Carroll, Lee, and Brooks this past year. And hope you hang onto them for 2-3 years. The rest? Guys that you can develop and WANT TO BE HERE long term. That is as important in my mind as “the number of stars”. It needs to a core part of the evaluation process.

I heard Bill Clark, former UAB HC, taking about the madness in the portal. He says the coaches he speaks with are just, if not more, frustrated as many of us. Coaches basically now “assume” players are lying to them when they ask them about their commitment to the program. They know they are all “weighing their options” in terms of NIL and the portal.

I would bet we get the Texas transfer RB.

Still need some more OL, but definitely trending upwards.

Just sharing information from elsewhere, which backs up what I suspected.

Quinn (the new kicker) is fairly new to American football, and a few of his misses were early on. I verified this by looking at his game log:

So, in his past 6 games he only missed one field goal. Since they have him kicking from 50+ with a long of 55, that's not just chip shots. One of those high potential kickers that can develop further. Even now his field goal percentage is 80.8 and Reichard's was 84,

I wonder if Talty will yell at him too.
