ICE Officer Kills Motorist In Minneapolis

The next time you're amused by The Babylon Bee, remember these words from its managing editor:

Joel Berry:
"If we lose heart every time a feral Communist commits suicide by cop, our country isn’t gonna make it."
AND:
"I’m sorry, but I’m so beyond letting my Christian compassion get weaponized by Leftist death-worshippers who want to destroy my beautiful country. There is nothing left for these people except defeat and imprisonment. I’ll pray for their souls and visit them in prison. But we need some actual JUSTICE in our country for a change."
AND MORE:
"I gave an accurate description, and the fact that I didn’t shave the edges off for a female audience makes it no less true. Be a man. Encourage the men in your congregation to be men. God is a God of justice, he commands government to wield the sword against evil. Show at least half the Christian empathy for the people being murdered and robbed by illegal criminals that you show for a guy who attacked ICE officers while carrying a gun. Don’t be the useful idiot the Left wants you to be."
when people show you who they are, believe them

I'm hearing Trump is trying to make a deal for the removal of camouflaged armed forces from Minnesota if Walz will give up the State's voting records/data. Any opinion?

Sure, I have an opinion about this ENTIRE mess we've been witness to these past couple weeks.

I don't know how the governor of a state cannot manage things better - and at the VERY LEAST - ensure none of "HIS" folks are killed.

All of what we have witnessed was on HIS watch and because of that - these two deaths are on HIM!

Feel free to continue debate and discussions on all the details of each shooting - alas there's plenty there to discuss.

But how anyone thanks this governor should not be held accountable is beyond me.

The fact that local law enforcement was held back when it was obvious to all that order was needed to ensure safety of everyone is what stands out the most egregious of (non)actions taken.

ICE and CBP agents are not trained for this - so why did the elected officials sit on their hands while chaos ensured?

The answer is they did it for POLITICAL purposes.

Shocking - I know.

I am not suggesting folks are not allowed to protest - but if you think this was peaceful protesting - I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.

Lastly on the subject of governing.......you think any of this chaotic & reckless to the public stuff would happen in my state?

It’s remarkable how Trump’s role just vanishes from this story. Federal agents, federal orders, federal escalation and yet somehow Walz is the villain.

The governor did not deploy ICE. He did not set their tactics. He did not authorize a massive federal operation in the middle of a volatile situation. That belongs to Trump and his administration.

You can argue protest response all day long, but pretending a governor is responsible for the actions or safety of federal agents is either ignorance or deliberate spin. Accountability does not start where it is politically convenient. It starts with the people who ordered this mess in the first place.

There is some truth in your post: "ICE and CBP agents are not trained for this." 100% correct. Yet Trump's lackeys defend and attempt to justify the actions of his untrained thugs while slandering the name of a VA ICU nurse, something which Trump's supporters are happy to ignore. Trying to pin blame on Walz for these needless deaths is straight up nonsense and propaganda from the MAGA playbook.

From Paul Krugman:
1769386274659.png

I was working on another wonkish post about China’s trade surplus when the news about Alex Pretti’s murder broke. I’ll put that post up at some point, but not today.

It has been clear for a long time, to anyone willing to see, that the people running the federal government — Trump, Miller, Noem, Bovino and more — are monsters. It has been equally obvious that ICE and the Border Patrol are now filled with sadistic thugs. Yet many people — almost the entire GOP, everyone serving in the Trump administration, some Democrats, a significant part of the media — were too cowardly to admit the obvious.

At this point, however, there are no more excuses. In a way the cowards and opportunists enabling Trump are more to blame for where we are than Trump and company themselves: monsters are monsters and can’t help themselves, but the enablers have a choice. And they have chosen, again and again, to accommodate and facilitate evil.

I wish I could believe that the last few weeks will be the last straw, but I don’t. To be honest, I wish I believed in Hell, because if it did exist, the enablers would be going there along with the monsters.

What I do believe in is the courage and decency of millions of ordinary Americans, which have been so dramatically on display in Minneapolis. We can only hope that this courage and decency get us through this nightmare — and we must do all we can to make it happen.

The Pretti shooting troubles me more than the Good one. Just like the Good case, it is a tragedy that Pretti was shot.
Before having anything like an informed opinion on this, however, I need to know the answers to a few questions:
1. It appears Pretti had been disarmed. A officer in a gray jacket was carrying a pistol away from the scrum. Was that Pretti's pistol or someone else's pistol?
2. If it was Pretti's pistol was it his only weapon (he was not carrying two pistols or any other weapons) and did all the law enforcement officers know in that instant that it was his only weapons? (Did every law enforcement officer know he had been disarmed?)
3. Who fired the first shot?
4. Why was that shot fired?
5. Why were nine shots fired?

Once those questions are answered, I can begin to judge this incident and the officers involved in it.

Considering that it's likely Trump's government that will conduct any investigation, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on legitimate answers to your questions. In the meantime, I'd be interested in your opinion on the administration's public statements based on the currently available evidence.

Personally I think you are purposely trying to absolve Trump of any blame of this. There have been several cases in blue states in which these “stormtroopers” have purposely went into areas without involving law enforcement or local governments and the situation blew up in their face. It’s like they are begging for a confrontation and a violent outcome. So how is this exactly Waltz or Newsom’s fault when this happens? They aren’t exactly giving local governments the opportunities to fix or help them. They are just expecting them to put out the fires that they create.

ICE has a function in our country. But the problem is Trump has weaponized it against the American people. It’s weird that the side that was so committed in forcing people to say kind things about Charlie Kirk after he got assassinated is cheering on a bunch of thugs that are brutally killing ICU nurses just helping a lady who they pushed down up.

I did not like labelling Good as a "domestic terrorist."
I have not heard what the Administration has said about Pretti, but I saw an announcement condemning the lies being told about their son, so I can imagine.
Another tragedy is all I will say.

Pam Bondi just sent a letter to Minnesota officials saying ICE will leave if the state turns over its voter database to Trump. Guess what? This has never been about safety or immigration. It’s a pretext for Trump to take over elections in swing states.
the mn secretary of state's response
----
Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon has issued the following statement in response.

“The answer to Attorney General Bondi’s request is no. Her letter is an outrageous attempt to coerce Minnesota into giving the federal government private data on millions of U.S. Citizens in violation of state and federal law. This comes after repeated and failed attempts by the DOJ to pressure my office into providing the same data.

Minnesota’s elections are fair, accurate, honest, and secure. Every step of the way they are organized by local officials – Minnesotans who do honest, hard work to ensure their neighbors, friends, and family have access to a secure ballot.

Our office has already provided the Department of Justice a detailed explanation of how we successfully manage and secure our voter registration files. Yet, without alleging any wrongdoing by Minnesota, the DOJ continues to demand that we disclose private data such as social security and drivers’ license information. We have repeatedly offered to disclose to the DOJ voter data that is already public, without the need to reveal private data protected by state and federal law. The DOJ has declined those offers.

Attorney General Bondi knows full well that the Governor has no formal role in managing our elections or maintaining our voter registration system. She is also well aware that this specific request is the subject of active litigation with our office.

Our position on the federal government’s request to access Minnesota voting records starts and ends with the law. The law does not give the federal government the authority to obtain this private data. Minnesota is not alone in declining to disclose sensitive personal data on voters. So far, thirty-one other states have said no. DOJ is in active litigation with twenty-four of those states– and the courts have swiftly dismissed DOJ’s claims in three of them.

In Minnesota, we will continue to follow the letter of the law, which requires us to protect the private data of our voters.

It is deeply disturbing that the U.S. Attorney General would make this unlawful request a part of an apparent ransom to pay for our state’s peace and security.

More broadly, the federal government must end the unprecedented and deadly occupation of our state immediately.

The tactics used by too many ICE agents have been dangerous, destabilizing, unnecessarily cruel, and counterproductive. They are tactics that often seem aimed at instilling fear more than protecting the public.

Finally, I have been heartened by Minnesotans’ resolve thus far to remain peaceful and law-abiding. I want to echo the calls by public officials of all kinds to de-escalate, even when the federal government appears to want escalation. We should continue to meet darkness and division with light and compassion.”
