I don't watch CBS and I don't read The Daily Beast; neither have been trustworthy for a long time now. TBH, I was one of the ones who openly hoped that Weiss could turn things around and she very well may. Here's the thing that I think is getting overlooked: if Weiss completely and utterly fails to remake CBS into a non-partisan outlet, it will only confirm what old curmudgeons like myself already knew. (Western media is completely irredeemable, regardless of which direction it leans.) I wasn't hoping to see CBS turned into another Fox News (another outlet I hate.) I was just harboring the unrealistic fantasy that CBS could be what we thought it was during the Cronkite years (despite the fact that it was nothing of the sort.)

You may rejoice, but I'll hate her forever for killing 60 Minutes. That's when I realized that the only thing that really counts in this country any more, and I mean more than media, was money, money, money. In this case, the murderous money was so much larger and powerful, it could kill the most decades-long popular news program in the country...
It's all subjective and if I felt that "60 minutes" wasn't already trash, I'd lean towards agreeing with you. As it is, I could care less. It hasn't been a trustworthy source to me for some time now, primarily because of stuff like this:

To me, its opportunity for CNN, ABC, or NBC to capture the disaffected viewers which may restore some balance to the viewpoints. Alot of these same viewers watch Fox News.
I was always thought it was strategic brilliance for 60 Minutes to follow the last NFL game. That is a valuable timeslot in front of a valuable demographic.
Sort of the same thing with our recent elections. Elect someone with zero credibility(or even honor for that matter). Just to see how bad they can screw things up.

60 Minutes was NOT already trash. They did a pretty good job with investigative journalism, most of which were not politics based. It is difficult, perhaps impossible over the timeframe of 60 minutes to achieve a balance in every segment presented. I look back at the Gen. Westmorland interview, not 60 Minutes, but by Mike Wallace and thought that it protrayed a man who had tried to do his duty under the most most difficult circumstances possible and made him the face of the whole Vietnam disaster. So no it isn't always easy to be "fair and balanced".
I wished we had a journalism outlet that would just call a spade a spade from a general welfare and moral perspective. And be upfront with viewers about their position.

I watched a "thing" on Ted Turner and it is was more than obvious that after he created the 24 hour news broadcasting format, getting the news would never be the same. Having to provide continuous content opened the door to what we have today. The format doesn't allow empty air space, and there's no way these "reporters" are capable of getting continuous actual information from the stories they report on, so something has to fill the gaps, and that's a lot of the reason we have the septic tank of news we have now.
I alluded to this in his RIP thread. Kudos for him for seeing 'the future', but goodness, he accelerated the destruction of the US news media dramatically.

This idea came to me in the World Cup thread over on the Football board. But in the spirit of keeping politics out of sports boards, I'm putting it here.
The foreign fans over for the World Cup are singing the praises of the American people and American culture -- because both are so much better than they've been led to believe.
The US media never misses a chance to paint the US in the worst possible light. Likewise the BBC. I don't speak another language well enough to get much out of other countries' broadcasts. But I don't need to. America is bad. All shootings, muggings, unsafe, loud, obnoxious, xenophobic and drunk. In fairness, Trump doesn't help that narrative. But it existed in both the US media and the BBC way before Trump hit the world stage.
Having heard so much negativity about America and Americans, many of these fans were apprehensive about coming over. Then the reality didn't match up with their pre-conceptions, and they were shocked.
No, we're not perfect. And there's just enough violence and obnoxious behavior to lend some validity to the charge, even though it's way overblown. Also note that it's the big cities that draw the only complaint I've heard -- that they're expensive.
Which begs the question, "How do the Democrats plan to use affordability as their keynote issue when the cities and states that they have had control over for decades are the most expensive places to live?" To quote Nick Saban, "What you do is so loud I can't hear what you say."
But this thread is about media, not red vs. blue.
Listen to what these people are saying....that there's so much to love about America and Americans, and that we do so many things so well. Note that it takes a bunch of foreign sports fans overcoming their preconceptions and telling us that. You sure won't hear it on the legacy media -- either here or over there.
