This is certainly strange. He was found unconscious on June 14 and has been in the hospital ever since with little information other than a couple people saying they talked to him. His wife is in China.

The laws in Kentucky for a vacancy are weird. The legislature changed the law when a Democrat became governor so he can’t appoint anyone, even someone from a GOP approved list. So they would have a special election, even though his term expires in January and there is an election in November where he isn’t on the ballot.

Some conspiracy theory nuts on the left think he is dead and they are just not saying anything to avoid a special election. I don’t know why they think the Republicans would worry about a special election where the winner holds the seat for a month. Plus the hospital would likely be breaking some law by not issuing a death certificate.

But the lack of transparency is concerning. The world isn’t going to end if McConnell stays hidden for the rest of his term but the people should be told what’s wrong with their sitting senator.

But he’s not the first geriatric politician to be kept sidelined. (Feinstein, Byrd, Thurmond). He’s just not being wheeled to his desk while an aide presses his voting button.

Apparently the 911 calls are out there and he was found down and CPR was done.

If truly that bad off at 84, he probably has minimal brain function. It is simply not a very survivable situation...

Their refusal to provide any updates is odd indeed.

You're right. It's remote that they got to him fast enough to reoxygenate his brain...

I wouldn't say dead, but it isn't so far out in left field to think that he's in a vegetative state right now. This is a very odd situation for sure.

I don’t know Mitch McConnell’s condition. But the facts that (1) he hasn’t been at work or seen in public for a while, (2) we know he’s hospitalized, and (3) his aides are stonewalling, would lead me to believe he’s non compos.

If the Republicans had a 5-seat majority, he’d be eulogized by now. But it’s 1 or 2 seats, and losing one of those makes it even more difficult for their agenda than it already is. It’s clear they’re propping up a guy who, if he’s not truly dead, is no longer able to form an opinion on whether it’s day or night.

I hope whatever can be done for him will be and he recovers to have a quality of life.

Also, we’ve got to stop putting people in their 80s in major political offices. May be an unpopular take but it’s how it feel about it especially if you been serving several terms.
Amen! And I'm in my mid-80s myself. Bodies have shelf lives. Brains have shelf lives. These are not necessarily the same, although there usually is some correlation. In the brain, it's actually measurable by the thickness of the cerebral cortex and the size of the hippocampus (plus a lot of other measurables-to-be we don't understand yet). I'll leave it to others to decide if I personally would be up to the job intellectually. Physical stamina becomes the problem. Chess grand masters don't have to leave the game because their brains gave out. Anyone can just sit, you say? Well, it turns out not. Even sitting takes a toll. In my case, all my joints which are practical to replace have been already. And also that the bugbear for folk my age, a cancer scare last year. From the standpoint of my age, I can tell he dreads the slog from the helicopter to the White House more and more. Given his lifestyle, it's a wonder he's still above dirt, well most dirt. Things are taking their natural course - more and more gets delegated to likes of Miller, except for when his ego gets stepped on and he gets petulant, spells I dread, since they lead to escapades like Iran. I may or may not be with you the next couple of years, but I really fear what he'll lead us into next...

I hope to have some happy days in retirement myself!

But dang... I just think the job requires a certain level of physical and mental ability.

Senator Chuck Grassley is 92 years old and third in line for the presidency. While I will try my best to enjoy myself should my enemies not kill me earlier than that age, I simply can't imagine anyone that age having the capacity for the job!

I sometimes have trouble understanding what he's mumbling...

Since you threw the soft toss right down the middle, I'll say it:

"Yeah, like who actually wins the election matters to the Democrats. (Platner/Biden/there have been some other shady attempts but I digress)

Or - come to think of it - the Republicans."

The Russian Federation has a constitutional requirement that certain politicians cannot run for any office that they would hold when they reach their 80th birthday.

There's merit to that provision.

This provision does not apply to the president of the Russian Federation. (Quelle surprise.)

The Republican Party has become deeply embedded with shamelessness dripping from the red hat wearing obese octogenarian right on down.

Do you know if age or term limits were ever discussed at the constitutional convention?
