This is not going to be a post about bashing new memebers. (at least i'm not starting it as one but we all know the ability of threads to have a life of there own.) As i would classify myself as a new memember (i've only been here for a couple of months) what caused many of you to join when you did? Was it the way the season was going? Did you wish to voice your opition with the rest of the bama nation? Did you want to learn more about football? Do you live somewhere that does not have a lot of bama fans and this is your only way to connect? I ask this only because of the many post that have come upon this thread being started by posters with less than 100 posts. I have also noted that it seems many newer posters are either not reading or not taking serious the do's and don'ts of the board. Anyone else feel this way or noticed this too?

...... back to the thread . I'm glad you started this one and think that it can be of help to those so-called "newbies" .

What I've noticed is that some new members haven't really gathered the meaning of the smilies . Some tend to respond in an aggressive manner when someone is really just kidding . I know I was a little too aggressive last year when I first joined .

Also , it takes some time learn the personalities of a couple of the mods , admins and "vets" . I know I'm quite sarcastic and can easily be misunderstood . Sometimes Earle is still hard to figure for me and I had read the board for a couple of years before joining .

Last years recruiting season was what caused me to join . I used to be a member of the media for several years and had sort of lost touch with old contacts and sources . Plus finances were tight(still are) , TideFans is free(thank God) and long distance calls weren't . I guess I felt as if I had sort of fallen out of the game , so to speak . TideFans to the rescue . I don't know if some really get how lucky we are as fans to have such a luxury .

Over time , everyone seems to eventually get along . If not , they usually won't last very long as members . Remember TF is a priviledge not "right" . Just thank the staff when you get the chance and learn the smilies !!!

Re: New Posters

I joined because of the speculation that Guillon was about to quit, just in case people jumped in and started bashing the team because of it. Guillon did quit, and some people did (and still do) bash the team for it, but all in all it wasn't too big of a deal.

Was it the way the season was going?Nope. I have been a Tide fan since I was a little kid (47 1/2 now). How a particular season goes has absolutely zero to do with my love of my Tide & my pride in my class ring & in my degrees from there. This Saturday, I'll be representing in my Bama wear the same way as I would/have were we 11-0.

I also joined because of an intense, long-time love for all things Crimson Tide & a desire to connect with fellow Tide fans from here in exile. And perhaps to keep up with some details that I would otherwise not know.

I then came to enjoy the non-sports & grillin/chillin boards as well, though usually only as a spectator and a stealer of Bayou's recipes...;) (aside: if you haven't made it over to those boards, check them out. The G&C board is very civil. The non-sports board is...less so.:) But still frequently entertaining & sometimes informative & occasionally even challenging of one's ideas. All of which are good things.)

Plus, I came after a few months of trying to keep up via...another message board...that I eventually threw up my hands in despair over.

As to your last point, I quote the beginning of Lord of the Rings: "much that once was, was lost..."

Re: New Posters

I for one have been a long time lurker, and then finally joined because some topic or subject that was being discussed really "flipped my trigger" so to speak.

If you will see my join date, you will see that I have been a member for over a year, which I realize is no where as long as some others, but I think it hardly qualifies me as a newbie, just because I dont have a zillion posts to go along with it.

Re: New Posters

I am a readerof the game and joined hoping I would learn more about
football! I read almostevery post. I have discovered 3 to 4 major categories within the posters. A few know the history of football and Alabama well. Some weave their memoryin with facts and rewrite history!
More are opinionated about any given subject and lean heavily on sarcasm to make their point. I would like to see more factual information and maybe just reserve one for opinions. I appreciate sharp wit as well as anyone, but often it seems to go over the line of being appropriate. When this happens, I think a refresher course in the lessons of "showing your class" need to be revisited. I do enjoy most of what TideFans offers-and have discovered a wealth of sources for information I want. I am limited somewhat because I "sandwich" my 'reads' inbetween work! I am not connected to internet @ home. One last comment-new posters-(at least this one) is still learning how to do what and what does this mean tech-wise. IMO [/B] Remember: No Barrier Can Stop A RollingTide! I see us rolling Saturday and beating AU. FEAR THE THUMB? FEAR THE TIDE!

I joined because I live out of state and this was/is the best forum to get up to date info on the Tide. I like the fact that the Mods keep the site clean and do not allow the stuff that is posted on most other sites.

Re: New Posters

I have been a member since before the name change and the two major meltdowns. I have moderated sports boards since 1996, became a tidefans moderator in 2000, super moderator in 2001 and administrator about 3 seasons ago. I was a moderator before Urban Meyer invented moderators. :D

While Earle and I may seem a bit heavy handed, gruff, rough and hard to understand at times we are both quite different when someone isn't yanking our chain. We both have had to deal with message boards when we didn't have as many moderators to help out. When things start getting out of hand such as a bad loss we act quickly and efficiently to stop the melt down in the manner we know to work best. If that means a dozen people are banned for 24 hours or suspended, that is what has worked best to make the site enjoyable for all. Being enjoyable for all does not include someone on a drunken rant ;). Most of the time we are simply joining the conversation, trying to keep a thread going or headed in the right direction.

I no longer live in the USA and there probably aren't 10 Bama fans within a 1,000 mile radius but I keep the faith and visit when I can.

I joined originally after the Mike Debose Meltdown to see who was going to be the Head Coach and a list of Candidates. I am mainly a lurker. This is the only board I goto and the only one I will goto.:BigA:

I joined during the whole fran debacle. I think I was searching the web for as much info on the story as I could get my hands on and came across Tidefans. Been coming here nearly everyday since. I guess you can call me a refugee from the AL.com forums. I know, I know; I'm almost too embarrassed to admit that. I've been forgiven and my soul cleansed.

I joined back in '99. It may have been right around the Florida game in the Swamp. I don't really recall. But I think I was searching for some other Bama sites to check some things out and stumbled on this one and had to join.

Enjoyed it ever since!

I joined back in 1999 (I know my profile says otherwise, but lost password due to my inability to write info down lol) to keep up with Bama football and to maybe get some inside info. I've seen alot of changes in the site, attitudes of posters and Bama football itself. Thanks for the topic....

There are far too few Tide fans up here. I joined to discuss Bama football with my fellow Bama fans. I have since learned to appreciate many of the other forums on this site...

I was a member of another board, but I got tired of the constant infiltration by barners and viles who wanted to come in and run rampant on the board. Most of the discussion was not really about football, but more of a way to attack rival fans or defend attacks by rival fans. I wanted to discuss Alabama football with real Alabama fans. I had been lurking on this board for a while and decided it was the most superior board out there. I've been here ever since.
