QB/ATH Russell Shepard committed to LSU

Re: QB Russell Shepard?

And long range relationships for 18 year olds usually have a short life span.

Which is why anyone saying he is an LSU lock is kidding themselves. That's how the rumor got started, but he won't have to worry about girls anywhere he goes, as long as its in the south. But he is the farthest thing from an LSU lock.

Re: QB Russell Shepard?

After seeing the results of this year's recruiting class, it would be hard to rule out any chance, no matter how long the odds..........and it's been a danged long time since we could say THAT with a straight face!! :)

I agree, but I'm also just trying to stay realistic. ;)

Re: QB Russell Shepard?

The reason people think he is an LSU lock is because his girlfriend goes to LSU. But he isn't close to being a lock. I have heard that A&M is actually his favorite. He will go where they let him play QB. Texas has already gotten a commit from a five star QB, so I don't think he will go there, but he might. His recruitment will be interesting.

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder!!!" Just think how exciting it would be, for each meeting, if he and his girlfriend only saw each other 3 or 4 times a year.

QB/ATH Russell Shepard named LSU as his favorite

Shepard now says LSU is his leader after visiting LSU for Junior Day this past weekend. He said that before going to LSU they were low on his list. That has changed now with his girlfriend by his side as he toured the campus and even when he met with the LSU coaches. Shepard is no longer including Bama among his favorites on Scout.com however he does still include Bama among his favorites on Rivals.com. I moved him from a QB prospect to an Athlete prospect on the Bama list. Now it certainly looks like he is a longshot for Bama.

Lswho is looking to be in good shape early, after a championship one could see this, I hope we get the ball rolling would love to see another great class.

LSU is looking to have a very good class, and anyone who even remotely follows recruiting could have told you that a month or two ago. It's a banner year for talent in Louisiana, and combined with the momentum of the NC... you do the math.

However, as for Shepard, I wouldn't get too carried away just yet. If you read closer, he never actually names LSU as his leader; he just said that if he had to choose today that LSU would be his choice. Again, if you read closer he still talks a lot about wanting to visit a ton of other schools and how he has not closed the door on anyone just yet.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Shepard went to LSU, but I think the smart money is still on either Texas or Texas A&M.

The real surprise player in this thing may very well be Michigan. If they strike out with Terrelle Pryor, you know that Shepard becomes their top priority, and you know he could start from day one in the spread option. That offense is ideal for his skill set.

As for us, I don't think we are, or ever were, a major player for Shepard. His passing skills aren't up to the par we need in our offense, and he is looking to play in more of a spread. That's fine, best of luck to him. We've already zeroed in on our quarterback, though, and you can bet your bottom dollar we will pick him up in a few months. And his name is A.J. McCarron.

If he plays QB in college he WILL not be one in the pros, that arm was horrible. Why does everybody shy away from saying the truth. Now he is probably the best athlete I've seen. Reminds me of the great David Palmer.

hmmmm guess what i heard was right.. or just a good prediction

It looks like it was just a good guess or prediction. Shepard himself is quoted as saying that LSU was low on his list prior to his visit for LSU's Junior Day this past weekend. I would still say he is not a lock to LSU but they are definitely his favorite. The fact that his girlfriend is at LSU will make it hard for another school to get him away in my opinion.

Unless she drops him for a college guy because she is tired of dating a high school boy.

Thank you, BET. That's what we've been saying for months.

The only thing that will keep LSU from having a top 3 class is scholarship numbers. We will only be able to take 18-22 players this year. Guys are literally lining up and Louisiana is loaded. I really don't think I've seen anything like this this early as an LSU fan, even when Saban was here.

LSU won't be able to sign all the top talent in the state next year because of scholly limits. Saban will probably pick up some fine players from the state LA in 09 along with the top talent in Alabama. It appears (from the 08 class) that he's beginning to "lock down" the state of Alabama.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

Re: QB/ATH Russell Shepard named LSU as his favorite

LSU and Georgia seem to be the teams to beat in the SEC so far in the recruiting race (hoping their 1 stars stay 1 stars:biggrin:)

They will be beaten because both schools will have very small classes this year. Between 15-17 for UGA and between 18-22 for LSU.

IMO this will give CNS an even stronger "presence" in LA. Could pay dividends in recruiting for the coming years. Kinda like a tug-a-war in that every handful of rope you can gain.........

It sounds like you guys are in about the same boat we are in terms of spots open for the 2009 class. From all I can tell, you guys are going to sign very much the same type of class that we are: Not a lot of commitments, but the ones that will be signed will all be very highly touted.

I can't say I'm shocked by the early flurry of commitments. Space will be tight, and I bet a ton of these guys are either looking at this, or being frankly told, that if they don't commit early that they might not have a spot open later.

I don't doubt that this hasn't happened at LSU before. Saban is well-renowned for not putting any pressure on guys to commit -- countless players have noted that they loved that about him -- but instead he just keeps recruiting them very hard and selling all of the positives of his program. That strategy works marvelously in the long run, but it's not particularly good for instant gratification, so to speak. Just look at last year. Well on into June last year, we only had one commitment rated four stars or higher. And then things started to take root and they absolutely went nuts, and we ended up having the unanimous number one class in the country. Again, it's a great strategy, but it's probably not suited for a bunch of highly-touted guys to commit early.
