Just being a little humorous here,

But when you think about it, minus K. Jackson, T. Cody, J Jones, a majority of the starting offense and defense is Shula recruits......

What do you guys think?

Great, Shula wasn't doing much with them. The O Line is now the best in the nation and well as the D line. Its all about coaching. Hats off to Coach Saban and his staff.

Hehe, you are right...I really believe in this "Year 2" people have been talking about. I think it happens because you get older players that are frustrated with losing & ready to buy in & work hard. Also, by "Year 2" the guys who don't want to be there are gone. Then, you get the "influx" of "one & half" recruiting classes...and that makes the difference...

But, let's look @ Saban's guys individually on the depth chart...

Mark Ingram (Backup RB) - I believe he has really pushed Coffee & Upchurch to be the best players they can be. Also, he contributing as a true FR. You really have to work to get PT @ this position!

Julio Jones (Starting WR) - Enough said ... Julio is the real deal

Terrence Cody (Starting DT) - Okay, this is where the defense starts!!! Because of him...teams have to forget about tackle to tackle running. That is big time. I think he has pushed Chapman to be a very good player.

Donta Hightower - Wow! He has been an excellent addition as a true FR @ LB. His play makes McClain even better!!!

I even think the play by Mark Barron has got Justin Woodall working his butt off & made him very good S.

But, you get the idea...one recruiting class can turn a team around!!

By all accounts he is a year ahead of schedule.

Just think of what he will do in a couple years when he is working with the players that he has evaluated and chosen. I know, "anything can happen" but it is hard not to be excited about the future of Alabama football.

While true that a lot of the starters are Shula recruits, it actually goes deeper than that.

1. The coaching now is far superior. The players Shula brought in were decent players, some even somewhat highly touted when they were in high school but they were never coached up properly or kept in top physical conditioning.

2. The discipline now is far better. Shua was a player's coach and Saban is a disciplinarian and will not stand for talented players to slack off and misbehave and still play for his team. Just look at the difference it has made by the players who weren't willing to change leaving the team.

3. The influx of talent Saban has brought in has made everyone better. Some of those Shula recruits that had potential but didn't want to change got the point that if they didn't try their hardest a freshman would be playing in his place and that competition makes the whole team better.

Just my .02 cents. RTR.:BigA:

Just making light of the Miles is winning with Saban's recruits thing.

Like you guys are saying, you still need a coach to win with good quality players......

I believe they call this a "day late and a dollar short". Your thread, that is..:)

But what the hey, if you want to make semi-coherent comparisons, then by all means..

But, as far as something even more intriguing than this moment of introspect you have brought us, is it really a dry heat out there? :BigA:

I had really expected our year to be 2010, because of the particular folks we lose for '09. (This assumes that Andre' goes, because I believe that will happen.) Since there may be a slight letdown for next season, this makes this season's success even sweeter. When I heard the story about Saban knocking the ball out of Coffee's hands, while he was having to carry it all the time, because Coffee wasn't carrying it properly, I commented to my wife that Coach Bryant used to do the same thing. It sounds like a silly, punitive little drill, until you realize, as someone noted here the other day, that Coffee slips back into a faulty carry, when he gets excited. It's probably that he learned it wrong back in HS...

Shula assembled a decent nucleus. Had he remained we would still have a "decent nucleus".

Saban has brought it "difference makers"....or play makers.

Players like Cody, McClain, Hightower, Ingram, Julio, and others are the added pieces to the puzzle that turn average into greatness.

And Saban will continue bringing in difference makers on a consistent basis until our program is back to where it should always be.

Shula didn't have that capability.

IMO

Sometimes only 1 or 2 guys make the difference. Remember how good we were in 2005 before Prothro went down? Remember how bad the oline got when Closner went down? We had problems with injuries and depth during Shula's tenure (not to mention the obvious probation). I'm glad Shula is gone, but I still respect what the man was able to do with what he had to work with at that time.

That's kind of like saying "I could have played Pro ball if I'd been bigger, faster and more talented..."

Just something fun to discuss, since there aren't any football games that MATTER this Saturday.

As far as the dry heat,

I grew up in Mobile before moving to Phoenix, so I knew all about humidity and heat. Phoenix is a WHOLE different ball game. 110 degrees is no joke whether it is dry or wet heat. I had shoes in the back of my car melt from the heat. After my first year there, I really avoided going out anywhere from April til October to keep out of that nastiness.

Anyways, I am in Chapel Hill now, so weather is no longer much of a problem. Also, have a great, up-and-coming football team out here. Hope the HEELS beat the**(!&#*&#*&*#!(!!!! out of ND today!

I landed in Phoenix in Sept., 1979, going to kayak the Grand Canyon. It was 112 and it felt like a blast furnace. Friends picked me up and we drove down to her home in Tucson, where it was 115. In fact, it was 115 in the bottom of the GC, with water temps in the low 40s, so we had to wear wetsuits for the first several days, until the water warmed up as it went downstream. We took a day hike in Tapeats Creek, and, when we got back to our boats, I was wet under my daypack, but completely dry elsewhere. One of our friends who was on a support raft picked our campsite that night and placed us right by a big black rock outcropping. All night long, you could feel the heat from that rock beating against your skin...

For me, These are Saban's Recruits that just so happened to come to Alabama during Shula's Tenure. They have alot of heart and Talent. Saban has unlocked the magic.
