Chizik is without question an outstanding defensive coordinator, but there's a lot of difference between a coordinators position and a head coaching position.

I think he's proved that pretty unequivocally in the past two years...lol

I mean Iowa State was actually a pretty good football team before he took over.

I'll just say this. Auburn just made a terrible mistake, not because of who they hired necessarily, but because they have split their fan support in 16 or 17 different factions. Too many of them wanted too many different coaches.

And honestly I think most of them were behind Tubberville.

I just think it's going to get real ugly down there before it get's better.

WOW!!

the sad or funny thing, depending how you look at it, KH did not blink when he congratulated the barners on a great hire. are you kidding me:conf2:

what little respect I had for Kirk went out the window..

he really wants to be on everybody's good side, doesn't he??

The feeling I got from what Herbstreit said was that he congratulated Auburn on hiring a good defensive mind, and a great person. In that sense he is a great hire, but unfortunately what AU is going to find out is that Chizik is going to be over his head. I honestly believe this hire will set back AU as long as Chizik is coach.

The problem is going to be can the guy catch up on the recruiting trail? It's not like coaching alone can make up for it because it's been proven Alabama and staff doesn't have a problem developing the talent they bring in. Rumor has it that Turner Gill and several others "turned down" the Auburn job and I suspect this was part of the equation when deciding to turn down the job.

Right now Alabama is on a recruiting rampage that no one thought even Saban would accomplish this early. Look what the 2008 class has already done, several from the 07 class are developing into star players and the 09 class appears to be headed for a top five finish. Many thought Alabama had stumbled to depths that though it would recover, would not recover to the point of what it appears it has. I've more rival fans come up to me after the SECG and basically say " You SOB's, looks like y'all have returned. I never thought it would happen." Chizik has a rough road to hoe.

KH knows Chizik and thinks he's a great guy. That's fine. I know a lot of great guys who can't coach a lick of football...

I like Herbstreit okay, but in this case, he's wrong. Nothing against Chizik, he's probably a fine person and is a proven DC but as a head coach for the barn, he's a terrible hire, IMHO. Glad I'm not an Aubie, I'd be extremely disappointed in that hire. Quite frankly none of the coaches they were "considering" had a resume like the coach they fired...ahem, let resign. But most all of them would have been better than what they got in his place.
Like Jess said in his blog, the barn completely struck out.

I'm inclined to agree with the heavy rumor that Chizik was chosen because he was willing to let his staff be handpicked by the good-ole-boy network at the barn. The other coaches wanted to control that and bring their own staffs and I don't blame them.

This has disaster written all over it.:)

I still like Kirk. What did you expect him to say "I can't believe that bunch of cow turds screwed this hire" or "I know Gene Chizik and he is great guy but he will suck as a head coach." Why does it matter to us what Kirk thinks about the AU hire?

Now that is funny. I guess great minds think alike. After reading the title I say the same thing. The heck with Herbstreit, I approve of the Chizik hire.
My sole reason for clicking on this thread was to say:

My name is dayhiker, and I approve of this hire!

Herbie is out in left field. Coach Chizik is suppose to be a Defensive Guru. Right? So upon his arrival the D actually got worse in his two years. Yep.

2008 National Ranking

Rushing Offense 66
Passing Offense 29
Total Offense 42
Scoring Offense 63
Rushing Defense 95
Pass Efficiency Defense 117
Total Defense 111
Scoring Defense T-110
Pass Defense 115
Sacks Allowed 43

I know the pickings are slime at Iowa St. but coaching is a big part of winning and the defense did not improve whatsoever. He had good talent at Auburn and now he must convince the top players to come to Auburn. If the players see the stats above they may pause for a moment.

I thought I was going to watch that video and hear Herby say that he thought "this was a potentially good hire, but we'll just have to wait and see." But to hear him say it was "an outstanding" hire just blew me away. The fact that he is friends with Chizik helps that statement make a lot more sense.
