The way too early discussion on whether Ty Simpson should return next season or enter the draft

IMO, he needs another year but if he stays one or both backups hit the transfer portal probably. Ty needs to work on his footwork. He moves his feet like a QB should but he plays a lot with nervous feet and that’s not good. His one year of starting QB is not enough quality snaps IMO. Yes, I know his dad is a college coach and Ty knows the game of football. We have to remember that until this year he has had only one start in his college career I believe.

Yeah, it's too soon, but we're going into a weekend of playing popcorn st university so I figured this may keep us busy. From what you've seen play out this season with Ty, do you think he needs another year of college football or should he jump to the NFL if he's projected in the first round?

For me, I think he needs another year of college football, to be honest. As the season has played on defenses have made adjustments and some holes in Ty's game have appeared. He tends to hold onto the ball too long and has an issue of fumbling the ball. I think the holding onto the ball too long comes from defenses making adjustments and it's now his turn to make an adjustment. I think another full college season will not only help him, but it would also help Russell as well. As a fanbase we want Russell to hit the ground running when he does get his chance. We definitely do not want any "on the job training" experience to cost us three to four (or worse) games during the season. We want him as prepared as possible when he takes over and I think sitting one more year would do that.
NFL isn't like where you need to be ready to start immediately. TY can leave and still be drafted in 1st round and still sit a year learning from someone. So it's not like it's a lose-lose situation for him. Honestly, right now I'm still of belief that he is not coming back unless things have changed at the last minute. He just need to hit reset button and have a good game this weekend and next weekend, then perform well in playoff. Those three games can replace the last three games.. so NFL Scouts just want to see his progress.

On the other hand, If Ty comes back. that creates new problems. As good Russell is, we cannot afford to lose him to another SEC team and he balls out. We got two good QBs coming in for next year. Those two QBs are supposed to replace Ty Simpson and Mack's spot for next year. It's too soon right now, but right now... I don't anticipate seeing him on the roster in the spring.

Do you remember what we both heard the other day about Russell: "He's very very good."

His footwork issues are due mostly to the below average OL pass protection. You can't blame him getting antsy in the pocket. What's not mentioned is he's one of the best QBs on the run while keeping his eyes downfield. Furthermore he does an excellent job of planting his feet to pass when on the run. The kid ball out 2/3 of the season and was a frontrunner for the Heisman and the early predictions was that he was Top 5 overall in the draft. He's had some tough patches in his last several outings, but not all is on him. OL protection, drop balls, and play calling, etc. He threw for over 300 yards against the best defense recently. Some fans are acting as if he just started yesterday and forgot to play football. If Bama had beaten Oklahoma, the conversation would be very different. I hope he goes to the draft and has a glorious career in the right system.

If Ty gets a 1st round grade, I think he’d be crazy not to leave. He’s got his degree and has played four seasons of college ball.

Russell gets a lot of hype - and I’m not saying the hype isn’t warranted - but don’t forget about Austin Mack. The staff is still really high on him from what I’ve heard, and 2026 will be his 3rd season at Bama and 4th year in the DeBoer offense.

I personally expect Ty to go pro, and I expect Mack to be the starter in 2026. I’ve heard that Russell was “nowhere near ready” to start this season in spite of the elite arm talent, and I suspect he’d benefit from another year in the system. Of course he could bail and I guarantee you he’s had suitors - but I will say that this staff seems to do as good a job of any that I’ve seen of “re-recruiting” the players they want to keep each portal cycle so don’t take it as gospel that Russell leaves if he isn’t starting next season.

JMO.

See what happened to Carson Beck
Different situation in a lot of ways. Beck went to another team with another offensive scheme, OC, etc. TS would be spending another year with the same team, in the system he's been in for 2 years, 2nd year with the same OC, etc. You can't really compare the two.

Needs another year. My only worry is not every player thinks like him and will wait their turn. There are many unscrupulous and dirty teams that will contact all of his backups and promise them the world.
Sure but I’m not sure how effective that would be- Even if he comes back Ty obviously only has that last year to play and all the backups would still be vying for a 2-3yr starting role. He’s not Diego Pavia.

If he does come back I would not be surprised if Mack transferred though.

If TY stays,so be it, if Russell leaves so be it, just like RJ14 said, Russell is not a sure thing plus we have good QB's coming in and could have the #1! Also not saying he is like him but Peyton Manning had happy feet!

The point is; if you are first round grade, especially top 15 you better go. You can't predict if you will get better, get hurt, the rest of the team is worse around you, etc.
Maybe he will have the same OC; maybe not?

Mack’s been in the CKD system for two or three years and he’s taller than Ty. He’s shown he can make some really good passes, and there’s clear potential there. But I’ve also seen a few passes where I just thought, what was that? So there’s ability, but also some inconsistency.

If Ty is projected as a first rounder, he should go. Only reason to return is to raise his grade from lower first round to upper first round. But returning also risks (1) injury; (2) Bama failure to upgrade the OL; (3) having to play with less-skilled WRs than this year; (4) unexpected turnover in teammates/coaches; and (5) performance next year that doesn't result in an appreciable change in his draft status.

If he's a potential first-rounder, he should go.

I was a bit surprised Mack didn't look for immediate playing time this year...

I'm trying to read this thread with an open mind, but I said a year or so ago that it would be in the best interests of the QB room for Ty to have a breakout year and get a 1st round grade and go pro.

Our QB room is lining up like a room of future stars. And Keelon Russel is sitting on ready and rocking on go.

As much as I love Ty, I think we've seen his ceiling. I'm not sure we've seen his basement, yet, and I hope we don't. Ty had a period earlier in the year when he completed close to 20 passes in succession (from one game to the next), which I think broke a Tua or Mac Jones record.

Concerning Russell, I think his basement is higher than Ty's, but I also think his ceiling is much, much higher. Watch him spin it and he he's smooth as butter sliding down a hot biscuit!

And if it's true Ty is a first-rounder, it becomes and win/win. He gets paid and hopefully lands on a team where he can continue to grow (similar to Pinix going to ATL) and then Russell gets the Bama reigns and it sets us on a track with having some great QBs about every 2-3 year cycle.

I guess my bottom line theory is if we get Ty for one more year, we don't get Russell at all and we have to start from scratch in 27. So which year would it be better to start from scratch with a new QB? I think next year instead of '27.

Nothing like kicking out a sure thing for the unrealized potential of another 😉.
We will either have a new QB in 26 or 27. And, if Ty goes, it's his choice.

It's really out of our hands so we are just guessing which scenario might work out better for Bama football.

As much as I've loved seeing Ty guide Bama this year, I do think Russell can take us to another level.

So we will start over next year or in 27.

It depends on the team. If he goes to a team that plans on playing him early he wont have a chance to sit. Most teaams who draft QB's in the first round dont have the patience to let them sit for a full year. They want them on field whether theyre truly ready or not.
