US launches strikes against Venezuela, captures Maduro

Please tell me I’m watching Wag the Dog and we didn’t just carry out a military operation that could be considered an act of unprovoked aggression.

That was my immediate thought.

And did we actually capture Maduro?

It's not like this President didn't recently LIE about having the shooter at Brown University in custody or about the FBI being there at a time they were not.

I understand that every politician lies.
I even understand politicians and military planners HAVE TO LIE about things, even if they come clean later.

Problem is, this rat hair wearing convicted felon has used this same modus operandi his entire life, courtesy of Roy Cohn. "You're accused? Accuse them and create a distraction."

He's acting more like Saddam Hussein than like a US President.

BTW, SEAL Team 6 are some Baaaaad Operators. It’s good to know we have such capabilities. A snatch and grab in a very hostile environment without no casualties.

My question is what is the follow-on?
Military occupation of the entire country until they have an honest election? Arrest and imprisonment of Maduro and leave Venezuelans to run their country as they wish?
I suspect it is the latter because the former will be a mess and I seriously doubt the Army is postured to execute this.

Yes, but you (like I) am burdened with the outcomes based reality of military service and how crap like this can go sideways. Corporal Bone Spurs thinks "order arms" is something you do at a cannibal restaurant.

Before I was on active duty, I asked my Dad (retired E-9) in 1991 why we didn't just "take out" Saddam Hussein, admittedly a quite common question back then. He looked at me and said, "Okay, and then what do you do? Taking him out is the easy part." I later read a biography of GHW Bush that said while he would have been okay if Saddam had been an "almost accidental casualty" in an attack, he had no desire to turn the man into an Arab martyr or - worse - deploy US troops on the ground to keep order in the country for the next 25 years.

And as we learned when his boy took us back, it wasn't the smartest thing we've ever done.

This exactly. The U.S. doesn’t want Venezuela, regardless of the Pottery Barn rule. Many , if not most Venezuelan migrants are dancing in the streets this morning. I had one tell me last month, that Maduro has no friends and no one will really grieve his demise. The question really becomes the power vacuum. Does Machada rise to power? Or does one of Maduro’s followers rise to power with a grudge against the U.S.

Surely, we had a plan and exit strategy!
