Bama Game Thread: MBB Bama vs Texas - Sat Jan 10 7p CST ESPN

He may have to call out guys by name if it gets worse. Guys disappearing in the middle of the game, not getting back, taking weak swipes as a guy blasts by them, horrendous shooting from 3 and the stripe, not boxing out, not getting rebounds, etc. Lots to work on with immediate concern.
“We got guys that don’t care enough to lock in and follow a game plan,” Oats said during his postgame press conference. “Losing doesn’t bother them enough yet. I don’t know how many losses it’s going to take ‘till it bothers them, but it’s bothering me. It bothers the coaching staff, and as soon as it starts bothering the players enough, I’m sure they’ll change.”

There was one moment on defense where Williamson was running out to the perimeter to set a screen... Me and my friends looked one another and said what is he doing? It looked as though he literally forgot we were playing defense.

The guy is an absolute liability on the court...

This team has some cracks with the injuries, medical conditions, missed evaluations, etc.

Oats also said during the press conference that it is some of our best offensive players who are not playing defense, rebounding, etc. I read into that Philon. I noticed that Oats yanked him out of the game on three separate occasions. Two of those were after giving up an offensive rebound, not sure what the other occasion was about.

That must be what the full body cramps were against Vandy...

I was looking at the stats that Michael Southern puts out. The 2021 and 2023 teams that won the SEC titles (both regular season and tourney) won with about 10 points less per game than we currently score. 2021 team averaged 79.7 ppg and the 2023 team averaged 81.2. Those teams were much better defensively. He didn't publish the defensive averages, so I'll have to look them up.

The last three years, our offense has averaged 90.1, 90.7, and 93.5 (this year). So which is better?? I personally like playing defense but we've gone further in the NCAA tournament the last 2 years.

They play like a bunch of high school guys. I thought that they were good but I see now that they are not. They are very light and get pushed around under the basket. When you stop their three point shooting, they can’t follow up with a short range game. Personally, not one of these guys are ready for the NBA. Let’s hope that they start playing defense, if not they will lose in the first round of March Madness. If the losing like against Texas, they will not make the tournament.

I feel like we get to this point about every season with defense/effort. Someone for whatever reason decides they don't want to play on both sides of the floor. It's kind of exhausting to watch it happen year in and year out.

We play good D for stretches of the season, slack off, and never seem to meet that high level again. Or at least not the last 3 or so seasons. We've thought it was coaching, certain players, etc. But it seems to happen regardless of who's playing and who's coaching.

IMO we had no business losing to Texas. I hope this loss upsets them. Are we tired already? That's not usually the case until closer to the end of SEC play. It's hard to say. Hope we get it turned around soon.

I can understand with the tempo we play that we are going to be hot and cold on the offensive end. What I do not understand or accept is our lack of defense! It is absolutely horrific.

CNO needs to find 5 guys that will sit down and defend, if you don't do that, you are coming out of the game for an extended period of time, not just a minute or two. To be fair, why can't CNO just say he blew it on bringing Williamson in this season? He may be 7 foot but he cannot defend, rebound, box out and certainly does not need to be shooting the three point shot period.

On offense, we do not have a clue about situational shooting. There are times we need to hold the ball and get a good look but we run down like a bull in a china shop and throw up a stupid shot! We also play selfish at times with too much one on one ie; street ball mentality or dribble the ball around forever. Basic situational ball is a lost art.

Rant over!

Why would he publicly say anything of the sort about an active player during the season?

Too many guys shooting 3’s rather than playing around the basket drawing files. Our three point shooters can’t shoot in rhythm like that kid from Florida last year. To back Nate Oates, they need to play better defense.

I just think it goes along with kids getting big checks now. They are coasting until the tournament.

And for the record, I dont think we can physically play the way Oats wants them to on both ends of the court. On the defensive and rebounding side of the court we need a different type player. But on the offensive side we would lose a step of quickness.

We would be better off trying to rim protect with a couple 6'8" 240# guys than a 7fter who wants to play in the corners and not leave his feet to rebound.

I agree, I don’t think they can play the way he wants them to play. This is why it is important for him to slow it down, play defense and teach them how to get short jump shots which will increase the possibility of them getting files called on the other team. Also, they need to practice shooting free throws every day. True, the 7 footer needs to get off of the three point line and grab some rebounds.

Strong first take for a new member. Please make yourself familiar with the rules. There won’t be much leash for you if you test these rules. Ignorance of them won’t be an excuse. Please acknowledge you read this with a thumbs 👍 up emoji.

First game I haven’t been able to watch this year. Is Bristow banged up? He came in this season making an impact and quickly has disappeared. Bowen seems to be a mental/effort issue and hopefully plays like he is capable. (Not talking specifically this game) Philon came into season trying to make a statement on both ends but have seen him slacking after getting banned up couple weeks ago not sure it’s because of getting banged up. I do appreciate Holloway as he seems high effort all the time and the freshman.

Think we are seeing maybe the misses in players this year. Williamson as pointed out and then Onyejiaka being out (not staffs fault) has hurt. Maybe the analytics after this year will point to adjusting to having a more traditional big down low. At some point the analytics will adjust to show defense wins. Looking like flyer on Bethea didn’t work. Thought he was the more sure thing out of transfers. Think we knew this was the most unknowns as far as players coming into the season. I trust CNO though.

Either way I will sunshine pump bball and the staff all day. I appreciate CNO a ton. Doesn’t mean I won’t be a little critical of play though lol
