People want to see us go away, but I hope CKD can use anything that will motivate them to return with vengeance next year.

I think that's what we want to see. A team that plays with toughness and meaness, which opponents don't want to see coming up on their schedule!!!

I heard Saban talk about "this generations players" worry so much about being disrespected. He said which is fine for motivation from time to time. But it cannot be used as a sustainable motivation because it is drawn from an emotion and you can't play an entire season fueled by emotion. You end up wearing out. Which to be honest, I think is what happened to our team this past season. They got "disrespected" after the Fla St game in the media and by former players, then took that and turned it around. But as the season wore on they not only physically tired out but emotionally gave out.

None of this emotional motivational is sustainable. Disrespected? Great, that'll last all of a quarter maybe, or just a few drives.

I think DeBoer feeds into this emotional motivation stuff too.

Didn't work in Tallahassee did it? It isn't a sustainable motivational tactic.

It's more than about respect...it's semantics...but this low ranking is newsworthy and a reminder to CKD and the team, it's time to reverse the trend.

It is really more about reputation. To return to that team that dominates its opponents!

Unless DeBoer changes himself, the team won't be like this. I'd love to see a driven, tough, mean team. None of DeBoer's teams have ever been like that as far as I know.

We used to be able to rely on upper classmen that had been in the program for years to drive a culture like that, to teach the new guys coming in, to be the ones to hold each other accountable.

Those days are gone.

We've got to let it go that CKD IS NOT CNS.

Everybody is hot for CCC. He doesn't act mean and tough...he's more of a nerd and is very quirky.

It's about what they practice, discipline, toughness, not the personality of the coach. If so, Will Muschamp would have been the next CNS!

I can understand the low ranking. We'll have a new QB with very little experience. We'll have an all new OL....(replacing a horrible OL with multiple NFL draftees).

We've lost our top 2 WRs. Our Top TE.

We've got RBs with no vision....hoping Crowell gets in there and tears it up.

Mostly new DL too.

We are an unknown, at best.

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. At first, I thought, "No way," but then I thought about the general perception around the direction of the program, and I could understand it. A lot of unknowns.

Here's the thing ... Prove them wrong.

I never said CKD wasn't CNS. How does that even get in the discussion?

I'm not worried about Cignetti either.

Teams take on the personality of their head coach.

Now....CKD doesn't typically have a team that's tough and mean and nobody wants to play. Which is exactly what you said everyone wants....which is true.

I don't think it's particularly disrespectful to put us at 17. Not that long ago, that would have been a sign that not a lot of "experts" had much faith in what we were returning and adding versus other teams. Now, I don't think anyone really knows what these teams are going to look like heading into next season. Too much portal movement and too little depth across all teams. Even this past season, most experts were picking Texas, Clemson or a dark horse LSU. None of them made the playoffs. Three or four years ago, everyone's national championship pick mostly at least made a four team playoff. I think any team, with the exception of maybe a couple on that list like BYU or Iowa, can make a national title game next year. Some have a higher probability than others, but it's not nearly as astronomical as it was four years ago.

I suspect that once the dust settles on this past season and taking inventory of what the portal impacts were, that Alabama will be a preseason top 15 team. I don't think we will be a preseason top 10 team. We do have a fairly favorable SEC schedule next year.

But here's the thing...do all those other teams not have similar "question marks?" This is what the media and pretty much every college football fanbase other than Bama wanted: to see us become average. So, yes, I think it's wishful thinking to think all those other teams ahead of Bama will really be that much better.

It's up to next year's team to reverse that!

Preseason rankings are guess.

Its all based on the previous years finish, plus who is coming back. Teams with returning QBs or QBs with experience get ranked higher.

1. Ohio State - Sayin
2. Georgia - Stockton
3. Texas - Manning and a ton of money on their roster.
4. Notre Dame - I have no idea
5. Indiana - defending champs
6. Oregon - Moore
7. Texas Tech - bought a QB with experience
8. Texas A&M - I assume its still Reed
9. Miami - bought a QB with experience
10. Oklahoma - Mateer
11. Michigan - better coach and returning QB
12. LSU - the new hot thing because of Kiffin and buying a roster...and a QB with experience
13. BYU - I have no idea
14. Penn State - the new Iowa State
15. Ole Miss - made the semifinals so get the benefit of the doubt
16. Utah - new coach, don't know anything else
17. Bama - new offense, new DL
18. Washington - absolutely no clue
19. USC - no clue here again
20. Tennessee - new QB

I don’t really understand why anything else would be expected?

We’ve lost 4 games two years in a row.

We trended in the wrong direction to end the year.

We’ve lost our QB1, WRs 1-2, have no real RB1, have major turnover in multiple unit positions and have only made one positive addition to the staff in Nix.

Why in the Hell would people rank us in the Top 5 or something?

We aren’t entitled to some kind of benefit of the doubt based on past reputations.

If we don’t like the prospect of being ranked outside of the Top 15 then maybe the team should just do something about it.

Good, succinct post! Also, until we show more toughness overall and more competitiveness at both lines of scrimmage, we'll continue to be relatively average by Bama standards and a fringe playoff team. Jury is still out whether or not this coaching staff can achieve that.

While I certainly agree CKD isn’t close to being CNS, personality certainly does play a part in success. And this isn’t just in football. It permeates to success personally and professionally. Does it mean CKD has to be a CNS clone? Absolutely not.

Bryant, Stallings and CNS, all that won championships here were all different personalities, but they had one common trait. They set very high expectations for each and every player. But the “standard”’ was that those expectations they had as a coach should pale In comparison to expectations the players established FOR THEMSELVES.

The problem faced by many coaches now is that very few players these days are interested in being “internally motivated” to be “the best they can be”. The delayed gratification of working toward the big payday in the NFL has been replaced by “give it to me now” of NIL and transferring. Even Kirby Smart hit on it a few weeks back.

Will CKD personality type succeed here, particularly in this conference? So far we have mixed reviews. But one thing I’m pretty sure about. He has to re-establish a “standard” like Saban, Stallings and Bryant did in years past. And that standard is player driven, not coaching driven. It is the standard they accept when they walk in the Mal Moore Athletic Facility.
