If You Could Pursuade CNO to do One Thing Differently...

Not sure if this is the case with him. But if he had a late growth spurt and started playing ball as a small forward the grew into this body, he may still just be getting comfortable playing big.

Edit: 6’ 10” as a freshman in HS. So much for that idea
I get aggravated at taller players who don't use their height advantage! My growth spurt happened from grade 6-8. I played 4 years of HS ball and 1 year of college at 6' 1.5" If I could have played at 6' 6" or more it would have made a tremendous difference in my success...especially in college!

So I just don't understand a guy, who is reportedly 7', playing so tentatively. He ought to average 2 or 3 thunderous dunks a game.

I wonder what his verticle is? I think it must be very low!

Cliff OTOH dunked everything. I miss that.

When I coached Bama HS basketball one year, we had two players - one was 6'9" and the other was 6'6". Our 6'9" guy could jump out of the gym, was athletic, could I mean throw a basketball down, but was very timid on the court - off the court he was one of the nicest, most polite kids you'd ever want to meet. Our 6'6" guy was physically limited - he wasn't a quick twitch guy, had gone through two knee surgeries, couldn't jump high enough to dunk a basketball, but was ultra aggressive. We always joked among the coaches that IF we could have transplanted the drive and aggressiveness of our 6'6" guy into our 6'9" dude he would have immediately become a top 5 PF prospect in the state.

This thread got started before Bediako was brought back.

What do you think CNO learned from having him back that might impact what we do going forward (beyond this year's roster)?

Go get a team of Europeans and G-Leaguers who are older who have never played college ball and win yourself a national championship. No one will be able to say a word.

Except that after watching how gassed those Illinois players were at the end of the game, I don’t know if they can run Nate’s system very well :)

No doubt, but I think it also is a reminder a 5 like Beds can really help us in a big way even if he's not a guy who can play outside the 3 point line.

And Beds is not a nasty defender or rebounder, although he helped our lane presence combined with another 7 footer in Sherrell.

So you could get that Euro pro who is more like a typical 5. Big, bulky, but nasty in the paint, defending and on the boards!

CNO may have taken a step in that direction this past offseason with the addition of Collins... but with him being hurt and the misses on Williamson and Bristow, it's probably more glaring right now. When Bediako was on the roster, he never was a 3 point threat and was more of a typical 5... so bringing him back was a clear acknowledgment that Oats knows a traditional 5 can be useful in his system.

I know Collins reclassified, but he had the body to support that theory. Just a shame he got injured or else we might not even be talking about this now.

Makes you wonder which path is easier. Take a guy like Collins and teach him to be a shooter... or take a guy like Bol Bowen and teach him to by physical???

I know CNO "wants" 5 shooters, but unless we can find a 5 who can bang and shoot, what he really "needs" is 4 guys who can shoot and at least one guy who is a crazed beast in the paint and on the boards. If a crazed beast can shoot some too, it's gravy!

Maybe a Draymond?

Team of the Week: Alabama Crimson Tide

After being embarrassed at Florida, Alabama’s rattled off 3 consecutive wins, including 2 in Quadrant 1 and a huge rivalry win over Auburn last Saturday.

Charles Bediako saved his best for last for the Tide, scoring 12 points on 5-5 shooting and grabbing 3 rebounds in the win over Auburn. Bediako won’t play college hoops again, but going out with a W at Auburn has to ease the pain a bit.

Meanwhile, Labaron Philon keeps filling it up. The SEC’s leading scorer had 25 points and 6 assists in Alabama’s win over Auburn and followed that up with 18 in a dominant win at Ole Miss on Wednesday night.

The Tide also continues to get outstanding contributions from freshman wing Amari Allen, who scored 17 points and added 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the win at Auburn and built on that with a cool 13-point, 7 rebound, 6 assist night against Chris Beard and the Ole Miss Rebels. A mismatch nightmare who can do all the things that impact winning, it’s easy to see why Allen has NBA scouts salivating.

Alabama’s offense ranks 2nd nationally in KenPom offensive efficiency, the highest mark in the SEC. A 2-game homestand, with a midweek showdown against an explosive Arkansas team, lurks around the corner, but Alabama’s 2-win road trip puts it firmly back in the conversation for a protected seed come Selection Sunday.
