Former 2018 USC signee, granted ninth year of collegiate eligibility at Montana

Why and how does this eligibility charade continue? Are there “ eligibility “ stipulations or requirements to play in the NFL? Should be no difference between “ college “ and the NFL.

NCAA rules are you 5 yrs to play 4, since covid should be done that should be the rule, but until they (NCAA) get a back bone ,players will continue to get 6,7,8 and 9 years, like many have said, this is ridiculous

They said on jox this morning that the dude even went to riley and told him he was "retiring" from football. 2 ankle injuries, 2 knees and a death in the fam was too much for him. Spent a year away WORKING and decided he missed the game. If you miss the game, referee like me. 9 years is utterly ridiculous.

And the NCAA has a problem letting Charles play.......
I hate the idea of G League players being in the NCAA, but there are multiple. For some reason the NCAA and Sankey decided the type of contract they sign (all pros) is what mattered. It makes as much sense at this.

5 year eligibility, no exceptions, no pro league contracts. Simple, done, clean.

Why can't we just go back to 5 years to play 4? No extensions for any reason.

And you must enroll by or earlier than when you're 20. No exceptions.

No professional contracts of any kind.

NIL that is tied to the school you're in only.

And you must actually attend classes for a degree or you forfeit games you played in.

Lastly you can transfer once. No more school shopping.

Just play football/whatever at a school and graduate. Go to the NFL if you're good. Get a real job if you're not drafted.

Oh yeah...greed and money will stop any reasonable solution.

Recently they changed the rules to where you can play 9 games and still reshirt in football, I think they should do away with the redshirt rules and give an athlete 5 yrs to play as many games as they want. But you only get 5 years from when you start any college or junior college to play football and then you are done. That would get rid of all of these court cases and make it much simpler.

The redshirt rule hasn’t changed yet. The 9 game limit was unanimously approved by the coaches at the Coaches Meeting in January. However the NCAA must approve it. With those clowns, who knows?

I heard a guy last week (I believe he was a reporter for The Athletic) saying that his biggest concern is the NCAA getting something in place from a legal standpoint that clearly defines “eligibility”. While we as fans want to see something that makes sense like “five years to play four”, courts have looked at eligibility as a “marketplace” for athletes and NIL. The NCAA has historically passed out waivers like candy on Halloween, as evidenced just this past month players receiving 7th, 8th and yes now even a 9th year of eligibility. The courts are basically saying “if the NCAA can’t tell us where eligibility begins and ends, why should we prevent a player from monetizing via Name, Image, and Likeness within that marketplace? Isn’t this stepping all over the antitrust laws?”
His point was unless the NCAA can get something in place like an exemption similar to MLB via Congress, we are going to continue to see players approaching 30 years old playing college athletics.
