Link: Texas Tech QB Sorsby Entering Treatment for Gambling Addiction

Was Texas Tech a party to Sorsby injunction? If not, I dont see how other schools can boycott Texas Tech without inviting litigation on themselves.

Sorsby effectively has an amnesty card letting him play wherever he wants. He just happens to want to play at Texas Tech. The NCAA and all schools are probably injoined from impairing his collegiate eligibility.

Like with Capone, the NCAA is probably going to have find another offense to go after Sorsby or Texas Tech.

If they attempt to play him, if they allow him to remain with the team, they are party to it.

What infuriates me is the continued “gaslighting” by Kirby Hocutt (AD), Joey McGuire (HC), Lawrence Schovenac (President), and Cody Campbell (Mega Booster) with this total BS of how much “they care about Brendan Sorsby”. No what they care about is Brendan Sorsby being on the football field. These guys will forget about him once the 2026 football season as done.

In reading Sorsby’s statement he mentions “using this experience to reach out and help others”. What? You’ve gone through a 30 day treatment program and now you’re “ready to help others? Give me a break. So you are already moving on to the 12th step? You can’t even help yourself at this point but you’ve done the “accelerated program”? This has disaster written all over it.

Compulsive gamblers don’t need help destroying themselves and those around them. They do a pretty darn good job of doing it on their own. What these guys are doing IMO is almost criminal.

I remember one former player with a serious addiction issue (not gambling). I’m intimately familiar with the situation because I know many of the people involved in his treatment. He was sent to treatment, came back to school and the team. The advice? Move on from sports, focus on school and your recovery. To contrary, those around him did the exact opposite, even to extent of having him doing “speaking engagements”. In a very short period he had relapsed. And the pattern continued. Robbery, shootings, relapse, prison time, and eventually relapse and death. Why? Because those around him care more about “what he could do for them instead of what they could for him”.

Welcome to your new world, Brendan Sorsby.

And this is even worse than that. He's literally going back to where the temptation will be highest. This would be like anl recovering alcoholic leaving treatment and going back to their job at a bar or the liquor store. Craziness.

Sam Malone, the washed up recovering alcoholic owner of the bar Cheers in the sitcom, rarely happens in real life. The alcoholic sitting around sipping coffee while serving alcohol to his patrons.

This would be as absurd as me being a pit boss at the nearby casino.

The NCAA should tell the state of Texas to form their own league and not let anyone in the other 49 states play a Texas school. The SEC made a huge mistake by expanding into the lunatic horn state .

At the time, I didn’t see it that way. I thought the SEC was powerful enough to stop their nonsense.

I now see that I was wrong. Those nutjobs could tear up an anvil.

Unfortunately, this is such an egregious ruling that drastic measures to get it overturned just about have to be taken, if the courts aren't going to do it. This cannot be allowed to happen under any circumstances. If nothing is done, then there's nothing anyone can do to govern college sports. Schools will basically be able to do whatever they want.
Is his NIL Income contingent on him actually playing? (Isn't pay for play supposed to be against the rules?)

If his NIL is not affected by his eligibility, then his income isn't affected either way...

Jay Bilas (who actually is a lawyer) says he thinks the appeal will be granted and be overturned before the season. too high of a burden for them to actually prove what the temporary injunction argues. the appeal goes before three judges, not just one

I also think overturning the injunction would be granted….but can it be heard before the season starts .. in Texas?

I am not a legal expert by any stretch, but I was thinking about this issue more and what the injunction means. The judge who granted the injunction isn't necessarily saying that Sorsby didn't do anything wrong and should be able to play, he's just saying he should be allowed to play until a court upholds the NCAA ruling. From a common sense perspective, I don't think anyone agrees with that outside of Texas Tech. Unfortunately, for this judge, the road has been paved over the last several years to allow the legal system to uphold or overturn the NCAA's rulings.

To me, the biggest issue in all of this is the how weak the NCAA has become, to the point that I don't know what their purpose is. I'm not sure I can really blame the NCAA completely for becoming such a useless governing body, but I don't think they have done themselves any favors either. What I don't understand, is how are the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. able to never have their authority questioned or litigated. Is it the presence of a collective bargaining agreement? Does collective bargaining exist in FIFA or the IOC? I don't think it does, yet their decisions always seem final.

It's all a weird, mixed bag. With MLB, they were granted an anti-trust. With the NFL, they were sued by the USFL and found to be an illegal monopoly but Trump was so despised by the jury that the USFL was awarded damages of exactly one dollar, trebled. The best possible outcome for the NFL. Not sure on specifics of NHL and NBA.

Except their softball coach all but admitted the boosters are contacting other team's players during the season. And that IS a violation.
On a side note, I think its disgusting that any player in any sport can be paid in college to where they make in one year more than they could make in a career of playing the sport professionally. Top pro softball players make around $75,000 yearly through bonuses and incentives. Receiving 1.2 million for one season pitching at TT is ridiculous.
Mia Williams, daughter of Florida legend Jason Williams, transferred from Florida to Texas Tech. I doubt that was done for free. Watch where the starting shortstop from Florida State ends up. She hit .530 for them and will be a senior. You're not burning up your legacy at one place to go to another for free.
