10. Baymont Inn & Suites Guests at the Alexandria, Louisiana location complained of a broken air conditioner, rude front desk attendants, mildew spots in the bathroom, and cockroaches,

9. Quality Inn The Williams, Arizona, location reported that their rooms were far from “quality,” with mold smells, worn-out mattresses and missing linoleum in the bathroom.

8. Clarion reviewers at the Fort Meyers location in Florida complained of rooms being double booked, broken elevators, and bed bugs.

7. Red Roof Inn A reviewer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, reported broken plumbing in the bathroom, drug dealers and homeless men in the lobby, and another said there were “bugs splattered on the walls” in the room.

6. Super 8 one customer complaining that the “pillows smelled like smoke and greasy hair.”

5. Ramada

4. Days Inn reviewers in Cave City, Kentucky, complained of cobwebs, dead bugs in the room, grime on the carpet, and cigarette burns on the bedding.

3. Motel 6 reviewers in Fort Lauderdale complained of holes in the sheets, worms on the floor, hair in the shower, and a “high” receptionist. “You’ll sleep better in a dumpster,” wrote one reviewer.

2. Econo Lodge A couple who stayed there complained of mold and stains on the carpet, “something sticky on the comforter,” and bug bites.

1. America's Best Value Inn guests complained of bed bugs, smoky rooms, cockroaches, the smell of cat urine on the carpet, and broken faucets and microwaves. A customer at the Brooklyn, N.Y., location reported people “renting rooms by the hour.”

"Something sticky on the comforter" may have me sleeping in the car. :eek2:

In the mid 70's I stopped at a motel in Maryland not far from DC.. The clerk asked me how long I wanted the room for. "Just one night" I said. He looked at me like I was crazy and said "we rent by the hour". A real eye opener for A young fella from Alabammy

Have you ever found one that rents by the minute ValuJet?

There's a Motel 6 in Jacksonville, FL that should pay you to burn the place to the ground. :(

They all have something in common, I just cannot quite put my finger on it.....

Hotels can be all over the place. For those that do not know, most hotels are franchise locations that are owned by a third party be it a real estate trust, investment group, or whatever. Starwood (Westin, W, Sheraton, Sheraton Suites, aloft, St. Regis, and SVO) has over 500 hotels in North America; they own less than 30 of those. However, good brands also manage, under contract, the vast majority of their "flagged" hotels. These brands are Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Starwood, and some others. Those locations tend to be much more stringent on their brand standards (brand standards being everything from mattresses, TV's, carpet, towels, staff levels, cleaning standards, etc) since the hotels staff are actual employees of Hilton/Hyatt/etc. Not all properties are like this as some major flags allow franchises to directly manage a property but the vast majority are "managed" locations.

Other smaller, low cost flags allow the property owner to employ their own people and manage the property to the brand standard. They usually wind up cutting costs here and there and you get things like this. Some of the lower cost flags are better at holding their property owners to the brand standards than others and some flat out do not care and I guess are just happy to take the franchise fees.

Personally I'm an SPG (Starwood) Platinum member.

The Best Western in Medford, Oregon is where homeless people downgrade their living accommodations.

I once checked into a Holiday Inn in Florida, but after inspecting the room, it was so smelly and disgusting that I checked back out a few minutes later.
The Best Western right across the street was a world's worth of improvement over the HI.

There can only be one worst ever, and it is in Kanab, Utah. The Sun n' Sands motel looked cool from the outside, and had a sweet rate, $29.99 no tax, but that's about all the perks included. My wife and I slept in our sleeping bags on top of the comforter. There was a general funk that seemed to emanate from every corner of the room. The bathroom was decently sized but there was a see thru curtain right next to the shower in so passerby's could sneak a peak. The continental breakfast consisted of stale pastries the owner had purchased in mass at a local grocery store. (think everyone who'd ever eaten a donut hole had to touch your donut hole to get theirs.) The man behind the counter looked like a heroin riddled Randy "Macho Man" Savage.

As bad as it was, it made for a good story later on.

best Western in Van Horne TX was the worst I ever stayed in. There is nothing within 200 Miles of it so it was either that or sleep in the car. Had a 10 hour drive the next day so that wasn't happening. Only thing scarier than inside the room was the people hanging out at the saloon next door

That or the Luxor in Vegas. Being in the pyramid was like sleeping in an ashtray. Had to put towels under the door to try and keep the smoke out. I was lucky though, my two co-workers both got eaten alive by bedbugs....

Worst one I ever stayed in was a cheap motel in Talladega, Alabama. I was there with co-workers for a big Scout function at the racetrack, and one was instructed to find "cheap" lodging so we didn't have to stay in the infield.

Let's just say we were all waiting to become witnesses in a meth deal or the domestic dispute that was happening in the room next to us.

When I was in college, a friend and I went to Oxford to hang out for a weekend with some OM girls we had met a few weeks before on Spring Break. We stayed at a fleabag hotel that I think was called the Rebel Hotel or the Rebel Inn. Something like that. It was a real dump and hadn't had any kind of updates in decades. That cheap wood panelling on the walls, green shag carpet... It wasn't too bad for the price, though. Until I woke up in the morning and stepped into ankle-deep water.

There used to be a place in Alexander City called The Pines Motel. It's sign was one of those that had the removable plastic letters. At night, people would switch the "I" and "E" so that in the morning, the sign would say "The Penis Motel". Happened all the time.

Stayed in a Ramada Inn in Birmingham one night and it was terrible. It was a spur of the moment trip because one of our kids was delivering a premie at UAB. Well it was the weekend of the Magic City Bowl and the young folks were fighting all up and down the halls. I went to my truck to get my pistol and put in on the night stand, the wife asked "What are you planning to do with that?" I answered "I plan to kill the first 14 that come through that door and hope number 15 gets scared off." it was a terrible night. The next morning we moved to a Marriot and it was much better.
