This statistic pretty much tells the story of Alabama football since the departure of Gene Stallings. The inability to win the close game. Alabama has HAD the talent to hang with every team they've played, but have not gotten it done in the close games. Alabama has had 38 wins by MORE than 8 pts.(one possession), so most of the wins have been via blowout. When it has come down to crunch time Alabama hasn't been able to seal the deal. This has become even more apparent in recent years with the scholly reductions as Bama currently has a telling streak of 9 STRAIGHT losses in games decided by 8 pts. or less over the last two seasons....yeesh. Talk about heartbreak.

Compare this to the 'heyday' of modern-day Alabama football, 1990-1996...and Alabama had a stellar 25-10 record in games decided by 8 pts. or less, including a whopping 17-3 from 91-94...Jay Barker.

We'll really know Alabama is 'back' not when we begin winning SEC chamionships, but when we begin winning these tight ballgames...hopefully that'll start next season.

That ability to make the big plays in key situations comes from both talent level and coaching. We've got to get the kind of players that don't freeze up in crucial times and the coaching staff to instill the work ethic to be able to concentrate during those times where a big play is needed.
