2008 MLB Draft Live Update Threat (Hood and Ray)

The 2008 MLB Draft is now underway, and I figured I would post a thread for us to keep track of Destin Hood and Melvin Ray, not to mention anyone else who might come along that have signed with other schools.

Two SEC baseball players have already been picked -- Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt and Gordon Beckham of Georgia -- and we'll see many football signees get their names called as well. In particular, Casey Kelley looks like he will go in the first round, and he signed four months ago to play quarterback at Tennessee.

Either way, I figured it would be good to have a live update thread to keep track of things.

Was it Hood or Ray who said it was his childhood dream to play ML baseball? I know I read a newspaper article on one of them, but cant remember which one now. Also, does anyone know how high he wants to be picked before turning the football scholly?

Hood said something along those lines.

With Hood, it's basically just a given. He'll be taken in the first sixty picks or so, and will get a signing bonus in excess of one million dollars, one that he will surely take.

At this point, it would probably take a huge slide from Hood to get him to Tuscaloosa.

With Ray, it's hard to say. He won't be all that highly picked -- probably somewhere along the lines of Woodall and Wilson -- but it's still a possibility, especially depending on his academic status.

26 picks have gone so far, but we still haven't heard Hood's name called yet. No surprises, he will probably go off the board in the next hour or two.

lol... I feel so bad...

I need to quit hoping he doesn't get drafted.. this is his lifelong dream.. I just wish we could see him in a Bama football jersey he is an intriguing prospect at either WR or DB..

I have to quit being selfish :)

Roll Tide Destin!

The Boston Red Sox, with the 30th overall pick, selected Casey Kelly.

For those who do not know, Kelly was a three-star quarterback signee for Tennessee this past season out of Sarasota, Florida. He was the #20 QB prospect in the country according to Scout.com, and chose Tennessee over Arizona State -- one of the nation's top baseball programs.

I'm sure you can safely close the book on Kelly, he's surely MLB bound.

The first round is officially over, and they are about to start the supplemental round.

We are starting to get in the area where we can start legitimately expecting Destin Hood's name to be called.

The supplemental round is now over with, and still no Destin Hood.

No major shock really, only 46 players off of the board at this point. He'll probably go somewhere in the second round.

mmmm....that's debatable!
Indeed.

Choice A: Pay a 42 year old lefty 8 million dollars to go out and produce probably the worst year of his career, and lose your first round draft pick, or...

Choice B: A good young prospect with a long future in front of him who can be had for a fraction of Choice A...

Maybe I'm a rube, but I'll take "B" any day of the weak.
