2018-19 Coaching Carousel (other than Bama)...

Re: 2018-19 Coaching Carousel

Yahoo reporting Neal Brown is leaving Troy and going to WVU. He should do well there.

I was just about to post this myself. Heard it on ESPNU a few minutes ago. I am a Troy grad, and hate to see Brown go, but wish him all the best. He did a good job.

Re: First Head Coaching Casualty of 2018

Tosh interviewing for Houston looks more like a test run than anything. This job was expected to be Hogo's for awhile.

Still can’t figure out why someone would leave a major school like West Virginia to take the Houston job—unless there is a boatload of money involved.

Re: 2018-19 Coaching Carousel

wow, great hire by WVU. I kinda thought they might be in trouble.

I only watched one troy game this year. I do know that he consistently produced good win/loss records at Troy. What type of offense and defensive schemes does he prefer?

He had the best group of players he was likely to ever have at WVU this year, and did not do as well as expected. The forecast for the future was not as bright as the history, which was already just barely better than mediocre. So, he was likely to get some heat in the next year or so. Also, the travel schedule at WVU given their location relative to their conference, was brutal. Houston is loaded with talent (the area, not the school), so there is a rich environment for getting good players right in your backyard. He got a good contract that also has a bonus IF Houston makes it into a P5 conference during his tenure (I doubt that will happen, though).

Holgorsen is getting raise and re-setting his clock in UH, something WVU won't do. He just had his best team at WVU. Now he's going to rebuild and fans will turn on him if he goes 6-6 next season. By 2020 he could be on the hot seat with an AD who didn't hire him.

Re: 2018-19 Coaching Carousel

Neal Brown is a home run hire for WVU. That guy is a solid coach.

A lot of the Barn fans were hoping Neal would be viable as a head coach if/when the Gus Bus is sent to the junkyard.

Lots of broken hearts down on the delusional little village on the plains.

Re: 2018-19 Coaching Carousel

We have lots of friends on Neal Brown's staff so it going to be a sad day for us if he takes his Troy staff with him. :( But, what an awesome opportunity for Coach Brown and his sweet family!!

Re: First Head Coaching Casualty of 2018

How do you not let him do the interview? What great coach will want to go to USC now?

That’s what I’m thinking. This surely will cause friction between him and the administration.

This may seem out there but it seems like they aren't that committed to Helton and Kingsbury was a big factor in keeping him. It is too late to replace Helton now so they're trying to play hardball with Kingsbury.

I read that they referenced some old rule. I wonder if, more than anything else, they're just teed for hiring him asserting 35 days ago and now he's jumping ship.

I would get that if he was the one looking. He is not the one reaching out - the NFL teams are. And he wouldn't be jumping ship unless he actually took the a job - neither of these jobs is likely to be offered to him. Just seems short sighted of USC not to let him talk to them.

I agree with this, I do not think Helton is the answer for USC. USC is in the same boat as Nebraska, although Nebraska may have solved their problem. When you consider what has happened to USC since Pete Carroll, Kiffin was their best hire. The bigger problem USC has was Pat Hayden and now Lynn Swann both USC former players and alums.
