Part of my faith was being a child of 11 and not having the remotest understanding of the gravity of the situation. Part of it was the infallible reputation NASA had at the time (Yeah, I know....times have changed. But that's the way it was in 1970).
Regardless, I never doubted for one second that they would get back OK.
I was a bit older and fully understood the gravity of the situation and had many doubts that they would make it back alive. It was a tremendous relief when they splashed down safely. I still had a fresh memory of Grissom, White and Chaffee.

I highly recommend watching the home videos that Bobby and CoCo started doing about 4 or 5 years ago. CoCo just asks the questions and Bobby just tells his side of story after story about his musical journey. He's a great story teller and it's easy to fall in love with his personality. I've watched dozens of those videos.
