Link: 2026 Transfer Portal

Here's my issue: He could've commanded any price last year and he chose Colorado. Anyone with two brain cells knew Colorado was a disaster, but he went anyway. Now he's in the portal for more money, which he could have had last year. I realize there's always a danger of kids going elsewhere, but paying 2.5 million for one year and losing him if things don't go as planned, or another school comes with a larger offer, that would really upset the Kalen DeBoer sunshine, rainbows, and ice cream cone fan club.
Maybe idk. It does seem like portal players are likely making more than HS players because there is less projection involved. But I don't actually know how true that is
This dude apparently also got folks at Colorado to make his graphic, supposedly for him to announce he was returning......then used it to say he was transferring. Pate mentioned this, but I'm not posting the video.
That's pretty messed up

In the least we're seeing a massive influx of spending because the schools are allowed to pay NIL now. This means this portal class could in theory be the most expensive ever. They all have money to burn, but next year more of that money is likely to be tied up since I'm sure in a lot of cases they're promising this money over multiple years.

It's a bit like when the NBA had a big jump in the cap, there was some really dumb spending and you could do some crazy stuff (like Warriors signing Durant) but then things calmed down a lot after that.

The problem is there is NO reasonable or realistic way to adequately evaluate the true market value of a player, including Seaton, when the market is driven by billionaires willing to pay outrageous sums because their egos and wallets are bigger than their brains.

Literally the market is “whatever someone is willing to pay”.,
That is a problem for sure. Not only that, once someone signs this dude, will others on your team feel undervalued and decide to jump into the portal? Probably best to wait until Saturday and make some moves if you want this guy. I think it is too much really and there are other guys in the portal already that can bolster depth without breaking the bank.

You can’t even accurately evaluate using a metric like value over replacement because if you overestimate the value of Seaton, then you also overestimate the value of the alternatives.

I do not profess to have powers to predict the future, but I could have told the Alabama staff on Portal day 1 that Coleman was not coming to Alabama. They should have realized this plus our WR room ain't exactly chopped liver. The truth is we did not need Coleman nearly as much as we do DL and OL transfers. I can only imagine the time, stress, and money wasted on trying to buy a Lamborghini when your budget only supports a Ford or Chevy.
I could have told them that, too, and in fact I did. Of course they would have had to read this thread to know it.

They should have had the equipment manager meet the guy, give him a tour of the trophy room to show him what a top program looked like before people like him ruined the sport, drop him back off at the airport, and send him a bill for the trouble.

There will be a lot of unsigned players this summer that will be signed at "clearance" prices... 😎

I am glad we didn't get Coleman and was surprised that he was even considered. I suppose that he felt like he owed it to Derrick Nix to at least make an appearance.

Yeah, how some of these billionaires have stayed billionaires is a mystery to me.

Yep, that goes against everything I have always been told about millionaires and now billionaires. They got that rich since they did not spend their money frivolously or stupidly.
I can tell you they are not saving their way to riches. Those folks either make good widgets, were born into the right family who make good widgets or know the best way to steal widgets.

People that level of wealthy literally need help finding ways to spend their money. It's an insane level of wealth that is hard to comprehend.

It's also insanely easy to make money when you're that wealthy. The money they are spending on college teams is nothing when you can make that and then some in interest with pretty safe investments.
