2027 Recruiting: 2027 Recruiting Thread

I know nothing about the strategy that our staff has with HS recruiting, but it does seem like we are very selective about who we pay NIL/rev share to from the HS ranks, and I am personally okay with that as long as we go hard in the transfer portal after this coming season. I want to believe that the staff's philosophy is that we can focus our budget on proven or more seasoned talent similar to what Kiffin was doing at Ole Miss. I'm not saying it's ideal, but I do think it is a potentially smarter play until there are rules put into place around transfer limitations and NIL limits.

With the landscape of NIL and portal the overall strategies are evolving and I think since we have had two incredibly talented HS classes in a row but we are very young (we were the youngest team in the playoffs last year) I believe the staff is looking to add more experienced upperclassmen to the mix. It could pay off big time moving forward if Bama makes the right decisions and spend $ wisely.

Any news on Bama Sales lately? I think he's "one of the ones" we are willing to pay. I'm sure there's a $ number we are willing to match Indiana/Texas in order to get him. Of course, I think there's a $ number we will also say, "Sorry, can't go that high!" too!

He has wrapped up his official visits and we are in it against NIL heavyweights Texas, OSU, LSU and Indiana (Mark Cuban $). LSU just flipped a 6'3" WR so they may not be in the market for him anymore. We will not win a bidding war for him so hopefully his loyalty to the state of Alabama wins out but I think this type of thinking rarely exists in today's age of NIL.

I think our big target is Gayles and I'm sure he will get a good NIL deal and Caldwell may be the 2nd WR in the class who may or may not have NIL $. Sales will just be an incredible bonus if he picks us IMO.

To add to the roster count, I went through the roster personally, and here is what I found:

We have 26 total seniors out of the entire 105 man roster. 16 of those are players who will likely never see the field (aka scholarship only guys). Out of the 26 total seniors, that number reduces to 11 if the 5 for 5 rule is approved. Out of the 11, only 6 or 7 will receive significant playing time this fall.

I'd also like to add that the 12-15 number we're taking in this class likely only includes players that will command rev share and NIL $. I would assume that number will be around 17-18 when you factor in the scholarship-only players. So yeah, it's not really time to panic at all. I know we've lost some guys in the portal, but we haven't really lost any DeBoer guys. Like at all. We've lost 2 total players that this staff has evaluated and recruited: Noah Carter and Micah DeBose. I believe the staff seemed to think they missed on DeBose, so that's the reason they let him walk, and then Noah Carter felt like he was gonna be buried on the depth chart, so it's understandable he left. Everyone else has chosen to stay. That speaks volumes, in my opinion.
We're trying to get older. We were NEVER trying to do this under Saban. Saban was able to stockpile 5-Stars and convince them to wait to play, if necessary. That doesn't work anymore. So, now you can beat a 4-and-5-Star two-deep with no depth if you have guys who came in as 3 star "projects" and stayed til their senior year(s) and are older and NFL ready, just late bloomers.

Saban's pitch was "come play for me and I'll put you in the NFL early and you'll be ready for it". That pitch has been beaten by "Come play for us and we'll pay you enough money to get your extended family out of whatever hellhole y'all are living in". Saban's way doesn't work anymore. We're going back to the days where you have to bring in some guys that can't play right away, but can grow into their frames, and might be, longer-term, better NFL guys. Chris Samuels types.

And people are having come aparts about it.

They don’t seem to want to write any checks to help with NIL though.

I'm glad to see this change. I think it is the only way we can succeed moving forward.

We just don't have the funds to buy players year in and year out. We're gonna have to build over time and hope that every few years that experience will help us. Along with a few studs here and there on the roster.
