What once was, is now again. It’s the circle of lifeYou’re seeing this now in the NFL where defenses are starting to catch back up to the offenses. You’ll see either a “split field” coverage, generally a 2 high look where the zones can get really wonky looking because they half the field and run various coverages on either half, or a “cover 0,” where they’ll pack the line but stand the DBs way off.
Either way the goal is the same, and that’s to out leverage the receivers and force QB the check down.
Here’s the kicker; being under center and utilizing a 3 step drop is deadly against such soft coverages as is running the ball, and we may see a resurgence there.
I'm just thinking about Jalen Milroe trying to "absorb" this in practice this spring and fall. Here are some strategy videos on the 4--2-5 defense:

Intermediate routes are the best way to attack this…and patience. You have to be able to take long drives with the run game and the underneath stuff. You’re seeing this now in the NFL where defenses are starting to catch back up to the offenses. He should have learned this already as we play a bunch of teams that play the 4-2-5 as they're base. Now, has he, not sure, based on that we've seen to dateI'm just thinking about Jalen Milroe trying to "absorb" this in practice this spring and fall.
I think this is his learning curve to be able to run the offense as KD and Grubb envision.
Gonna be rough, I'm afraid, for JM.
Yep, even back in 2011, Saban said we were in nickel at least 75 percent of the time, and when you account for dime being at least another 10-15 percent even then the 3-4 was used less than 10 percent. For the last 7 or 8 years it's been in the very low single digits. We've been running a 4-2-5 and a 3-3-5 at Bama for some time. So, it's nothing new to the players. They will probably have to learn new terminology and probably a simplified scheme (esp. in the secondary). Like I said in another thread, Saban has stated multiple times in press conferences we're in a 3 man front only about 30% of the time.
Just imagine offenses running the I with 3 step drops and slants or sluggo against some of these coverages this days, or running isos, duos and traps more frequently than inside or outside zone.Intermediate routes are the best way to attack this…and patience.
