I have been on this board a while and I am a lurker, but this is something that needs to be told...

My uncle was diagnosed with liver cancer during the first week of September of 2009. The doctor was very upbeat, but told him it would be a battle. The doctor told him that he definitely would get to see Christmas and hopefully a lot more of them. Almost a week later the doctor told him he had 4 weeks to live. It was a shock for everyone in our family. My uncle and my father had worked together for the last 11 or so years and I have worked with them the last 2. The chemo almost started immediately and he was getting good results back from tests. He has been in the hospital a couple times and actually had a bad case of pneumonia and sepsis and came back strong. One week ago he began to fall ill and was taken to the hospital the doctor said he would not last through the weekend. The family was called in and stayed with him night and day. He began to feel better and by Friday was sitting up and talking and joking like he always did...Enter Terrence Cody...

Terrence was signing autographs in Childersburg which is a a couple of miles away from Sylacauga where my uncle is in the hospital. Word got to him from a friend who set up the autograph session that it would make my uncles day if he could come by. He did, he took pictures, signed autographs, and talked for two hours. It was hard to get him to leave. It made my uncles day indeed. As of today he is supposed to leave the hospital to go back home.

When Dennis Francione left to go to Texas A&M I was pretty upset, I still took a lot of Alabama Football stuff personal. He told me something that has stuck with me and changed my outlook on Alabama Football, that no one person is bigger than Alabama Football, that we would bounce back like Alabama always did. Terrence Cody disproved that statement, he was bigger than Alabama football on Saturday, he was someone that genuinely cared for someone who was hurting and brought a little joy to a family who needed it.

So if you get a chance, go to this website CaringBridge / mikepupdogellis / Welcome and leave my uncle and his family (wife, 4 daughters, 2 grandchildren and one on the way) a comment, every word of encouragement helps and every thought counts.

Thanks and RTR!,

Paul

Great story about a great young man. It's really heart warming to see a young man who understands the positive effect he can have on people just by his presence. Yet who is humble enough to do it without feeling the need to be compensated for his time. That friends is the mark of a great young man who has matured beyond his years. I am proud of him and all he has given to all of us. Terrance was one of the most pleasant suprises of the last two years for all of us. I'm sure his hardwork, uphill battle against the odds and determination to fight to the end served your uncle well as an example and provided him with great joy during his visit.

God bless your uncle and your family as they will now be in my prayers.

Great story. It's pretty easy to tell that big Terrance is one of the good guys, he always has a big old grin on his face.

Prayers to your uncle and family. The way he keeps beating the odds,he just might shock the docs. :BigA:

Terrence Cody was a very pleasant addition to Alabama the last couple of years. I knew he had a good head on his shoulders when he came back for his senior year despite a bunch of people saying he could go to the NFL after one year. His senior season cemented his ability in the NFL. I'll never forgot his reaction which was just pure, unadulterated joy following his block at the end of the TN game.

His attitude, combine experience, weight reduction, and not the least of which, sheer size, has had him climbing up the draft board as the best nose tackle in the draft. Stories like this show that despite all his success and potential NFL career, he is still willing to spend time with someone to help them out. He did it out of the goodness of his heart. It was not a media or $ driven event, just one man giving comfort to another. Way to go Cody.

Great story, and I also hope things turn around for your uncle.

I heard a great story about Cody not to long ago. Quick edited version - a friend of my bro-in-law was with his young son at a hotel in pensacola last month and they met Cody in the elevator (think he was there having something done at the Andrews Institue) - the son was so excited and talked to him and said Cody was just great. But when they parted ways, he was so mad at himself for not asking for his autograph. So they stuck a note on Cody's car with their room # explaining who he was and how he really wished he'd got his autograph. They returned to their room and there were several autographed pics of him slid under the door. Just a great guy!

I read about this story on another forum and can't say enough how impressed I am with Cody. He really seems to have a big heart to go along with his big stature on the football field. I wish him all the best in the NFL and will be keeping a close eye on his career wherever he ends up landing at the next level.

I am really sorry to hear about your uncle, I had a close friend pass away with cancer 12 years ago now. Never easy to go through that and I will be praying for him and your family. It sounds like Cody was able to bring some good spirits to a tough situation though.

Paul I just signed Mike's guestbook. I told his I have included him in my Prayer Journal, and hoped I cheered him up and that all our Prayers will lift him up. Prayer is very powerful, and I have seen what it can do. I will look for his caringbridge updates and I will Pray for his recovery.

The selflessness some of these 'kids' display is really amazing. I was far too absorbed with my own desires to have done something like this wehen I was in my early 20's.

Thanks for sharing.

“I asked him ‘Do you sit next to coach Saban on the bus? I heard you always did.’ He said, ‘I sure do. I sit by him on the bus, at the restaurant, at the movie theater, wherever we go.’ I asked him why he did that, and he said he just liked to aggravate him.”
This one made me laugh out loud.:)
