No, I didn't post on the wrong board, LOL! This is not sports related though the story resides inside the sports realm. I was watching ESPN's The Sports Reporters and they were talking about being a sports broadcaster in the age of social media and how every single thing they say, no matter how trivial or light-hearted is criticized to death over social media.

One of the reporters was telling a story about Verne Lundquist, who had no clue he was being roasted over flames on the internet each week about his broadcasting. The guy said Verne told him that he thought overall he was a good broadcaster and did the best job he could for the viewers' experience. But once he saw what was being said about him on the internet it crushed him. He was apparently stunned and deeply hurt by all the things he saw being said about him and told the guy he must not be a good broadcaster after all.

As the guy finished the story the panel of broadcasters all agreed that story is one of the many reasons they don't look at social media as it pertains to what people say about them because it can truly impact their mental health. If Verne looked at Tidefans I'm surprised he didn't jump off a bridge or commit himself because we hammered the dude.

Or, maybe if he had looked earlier, he would have improved his performance.

Others' opinions of oneself is not necessarily true, but on the other hand, it should not be glibly disregarded either. Listen, think, as yourself, "is this view valid? Can I improve in light of this feedback?" then act accordingly.

Every fan base in the SEC is convinced that Gary Danielson was biased against them, which tells me he wasn't.

I don't know Verne Lundquist personally, but on air, he seemed like a nice fun guy who you wouldn't mind spending a Saturday afternoon with watching football. He had his quirks, which many of us found amusing and endearing rather than annoying, and it saddens me to know that he was hurt by viewer vitriol.

CBS' Verne Lundquist is a great broadcaster, but a better person

My quibble with Gary is that he would latch onto something and just never let go of it. A great example is when Terrance Cody took his helmet off after blocking UT's kick. Gary went on for at least five minutes about how that should have been a penalty.

yeah, he did that so much that Kiffin believed it too. Even so it would have still been Alabama's ball as it occurred after the play was over.

Vern and Gary did sometimes seem downright giddy when we were losing.

What I like about Gary Danielson is his film study. He will say, "In this situation, Georgia usually likes to run a screen." Then, the next play, they do exactly that.
Like you said, he tends to grab onto something and never let it go. "Did I mention Mark Ingram's father was in prison?" Yes, Gary, about 1,000 times in this broadcast.

Verne is a legend among the "insiders" in sports announcing and especially CFB. Yes, he stumbled over names, etc.,, but his folksy way of talking -- especially at dramatic times -- was incredibly effective. If one is in the public view one should never read social media...have a team member who reviews and brings your relevant critiques.

In ministry I listened to those whom I knew to be faithful to our shared vision of what that particular church could be.We did not always agree, but we did work closely together. The others I ignored simply because they were projecting their personal biases to myself and the church. Social media can be the cess pool of modernity.

my problem Verne and Gary was pretty simple. They only did 1 game a week for 12 or 13 weeks and we were always like 6 of the games. Nearly half of their job and they still knew close to nothing about us other than a few stars names. Mind boggling. If I was that unprepared for my work I'd have been let go ages ago

I like Gary and Verne.

Gary’s analysis is as good as it gets. He’s so much better than most of the color commentators I see.

Verne was like a good friend to watch the game with. This is what I want out of the lead sportscaster. My all time favorite was Harry Caray. Second, Harry’s son Skip. Third, Harry’s grandson, Chip. All these guys are like having a friend at the game. Verne was like that too.

Verne was like a good friend who'd been sipping on whiskey, to watch the game with. This is what I want out of the lead sportscaster. My all time favorite was Harry Caray. Second, Harry’s son Skip. I clarified your comment a bit. :D
